Sharp sues Vizio over display tech in 70-inch TVs
Sharp, the Japanese electronics company behind the world's largest 8K LCD TV, is suing Vizio and two other companies over alleged patent infringement. Sharp claims that the companies infringed 12 patents related to panel technologies, like liquid crystal displays (LCD). In particular, Sharp says one of Vizio's 70-inch TVs is an offender. Sharp is seeking an injunction, as well as compensation for lost profits and the use of its technology.
Westinghouse 2012 CES HDTV lineup unveiled, plenty of LCDs for all
After teasing its CES HDTV lineup a few days ago Westinghouse has revealed the full line of TVs it will be showing off. As promised, it's packing a few LED lit models including the 70-inch UW70 and 55-inch EW55 models, packing standard 1080p, 120Hz refresh rate spec sheets. Also new for the show is its first slim-bezel HDTV model, the 46-inch UW46 series seen above that makes sure there's very little frame around your picture. Other than that the company is also jumping on the soundbar trend, offering the WSB-N20BW with Bluetooth support. Other than that there are a few more midrange sets expected and the sole 3D model we got a peek at over the summer, if you prefer your HDTV feature lists (and, most importantly, price tag) trimmed to the basics, you'll find all the details in the press release after the break.
Sharp's new 70-inch LCD HDTV is definitely bigger than the one your friend just bought
At its "Spectacularge" press conference today Sharp announced its new 70-inch LC-70LE732U is the largest LCD HDTV on the market . It sports Quattron four color pixels, full LED backlighting, Netflix, CinemaNow, Vudu Apps and DLNA access among its list of features, but no 3D. That will be remedied by one of the three additional models of 70-inch LCDs Sharp says it will ship this summer but in the meantime we're just enjoying a throwback to the heady days of 2006 when consumer LCDs were last found in this size range. Interested parties with enough green to cover the $3,799 MSRP should be able to order these at their local retailers, while the rest can gawk at the specs in the press release and hands-on shots. Sharp has 70-inch 3D LCD, soundbars and new Blu-ray players on deck for 2011
Sharp intends to keep its position in the large LCD market with the help of two new lines which both top out at 70-inches -- finally. The LC-70LE732U 3DTV sits at the top of the LE835 series which is also set to be available in sizes ranging as small as 40-inches and is expected in February. No word on what any of these sets will cost ya, but they will all feature built-in WiFi and a wide range of streaming options including VUDU and Netflix, as well as other internet apps like Flickr, Facebook and Twitter. The trio of new 3D Blu-ray players, the BD-H25U, BD-H35U and BD-H75U, will also ship this February with many of the same network and streaming options as the TV, but will also be IP controllable for home automation fans. Meanwhile there are five new soundbars on tap starting with a USB model, the CP-USB500, for great sound on the go and ending with the HT-SL70 which can pass 3D signals via HDMI 1.4a and even supports an audio return channel. %Gallery-112757% %Gallery-112760%
Sharp and Samsung's CES posters preview Smart TV apps, 70-inch Quattron LCD
Samsung and Sharp couldn't help but tip their hands regarding CES announcements with some of the posters wrapped around the Las Vegas Convention Center. While Sharp is advertising its largest Quattron LCD ever at 70-inches (up from a mere 68-inch version before) Samsung is taking the opportunity to invite everyone to "join in" its Smart TV platform. No word on whether that encompasses its expected Google TV efforts or just existing Samsung Apps, but icons listed included the already available Google Maps, Facebook, Twitter and more, check out a few more pictures after the break.
Samsung shows off 70-inch 'Ultra Definition' 3DTV
Continuing a fine tradition of large, high resolution prototype displays, Samsung Electronics picked today to show off its latest innovation, in the form of the world's first 70-inch, "Ultra Definition" 240Hz 3DTV. That UD tag indicates a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels that puts your current HDTV and even larger projection 1080p 3D units to shame. The big deal in this version is the super high speed silicon Samsung has developed to drive all those pixels fast enough to support smooth motion and 3D viewing -- glasses still required, of course.
Chuwi M70's 7-inch PMP reviewed, said to be large and in charge
Many PMPs are svelte, portable things that feel good in the hand and not too bad in a pocket. The same cannot be said for the 8GB Chuwi M70, a PMP packing a 7-inch, 700 x 480 widescreen LCD and not much else. In a review at MP4 Nation Blog that screen gets high marks, as does the ability to play video up to 1280 x 720 smoothly, but build quality is apparently a disappointment, and those dimensions make it something less than totally portable. The device hasn't officially been released in the US, but if you've got room in your heart for a PMP with a little extra to love they can be found online for under $120. Get hunting. [Thanks, Tom]
Samsung's brightest 70-inch outdoor LCD meets the suddenly-blinded masses
Say hello to the brightest LCD panel entering mass production - Samsung's 70-inch super bright digital information display will be burning out retinas near you next year. Taking local dimming LED backlighting to a new application, it features 200,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000nit (cd/m2) brightness -- as much as four times brighter than the HDTV on your wall and topping the previous 1,500nit champ -- more than capable of displaying information or advertisements in bright sunlight or dim environments. The 1080p panel already nabbed a CES Innovation Award earlier today and will be sampled (in Las Vegas, surely) before the year is out, but you may want to grab some shades now just in case.
Fully waterproof 70-inch 1080p LCD HDTV goes great in yachts
Not that 70-inch LCD HDTVs are anything new, but a "fully waterproof" one just might be. Have a look at MarineAV's LCD70: a 1080p behemoth that features a 1,500:1 contrast ratio, 600 cd/m2 brightness, 8-millisecond response time, 178-degree viewing angles, a slew of inputs and VESA mount compatibility. We're told that the panel is actually a Samsung, which leads us to believe that MarineAV simply snapped up a few of these bad boys and added the water protection itself. Worth the £27,995.95 ($54,664) asking price? Depends on your perspective, we'd imagine.[Via CNET]
Planar introduces 70-inch 1080p m70L LCD monitor
. Yeah, 70-inch LCDs may still make one swoon, but they're far from revolutionary. Still, Planar's managing to teach an aging dog new ways to be important by labeling its upcoming m70L the "first full-featured commercial-grade, high-definition 70-inch LCD monitor." A proud member of the m-Series lineup (pictured), this unit is entirely more comfortable in control rooms and fashion stores than in anyone's home theater, but still, it's a pretty impressive beast on paper. Reportedly, you'll find 178-degree viewing angles, 1,500:1 contrast ratio, a full 1080p resolution, 600 nits of brightness and HD-SDI connectivity. Also of note, this thing was built to run 'round the clock, but also boasts an integrated timer for scheduling events (source switching, on / off, etc.), landscape or portrait orientation support and compatibility with VESA mounts. The only real rub, however, is the price, and considering the $30,000 sticker it'll be rockin' when it lands next month, we'd say you're better off elsewhere.[Via DigiTimes]
GPNC's 70-inch all-in-one touch-screen PC
We've seen plenty of all-in-one PCs in our time but this 70-inch model from Korea's GPNC is certainly the biggest. Meant for commercial use, it will be produced in both touch-screen and standard LCD models featuring a 1080p capable, 70-inch Samsung LCD with an 8,000:1 contrast, 8-ms response, and 700cd/m2 brightness. No details on trivialities such as PC specs, price or availability unfortunately, so we're bound to hear more on this in the weeks ahead. Hey GPNC, here's s a tip: we recommend taking future product shots without XP error messages if you hope to instill a sense of confidence in your target buying audience.
Sony announces its biggest Bravia: KD-70XBR3
Sony just announced its newest Bravia LCD, the KD-70XBR3. This 70-inch HDTV is one of the first to support the xvYCC, or x.v.Color as Sony has named it via HDMI 1.3. It's the largest Bravia announced and features 120Hz "Motionflow" technology to reduce blurring, like many of the new LCDs we've seen so far. The panel also features 10-bit video processing and Triluminos LED backlight. x.v.Color gives a color range of video that is 1.8 times greater than what was previously available, and is also supported by the four new Handycams Sony announced. The set features a 7,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio with DRC-MFv2.5, and is slated to ship this February for $33,000. If that price is acceptable to you, it's available for preorder now from Sony Style stores and several other retailers.
Samsung's two 120hz 1080p LCDs coming to CES, and stores, in 2007
Samsung has lifted the curtain just a bit higher, revealing two new LCDs it will be showing at CES. The 1080p, 120hz refresh rate 70-inch LCD shown previously at IMID 2006 will make the trip, as well as a 52-inch model slated to begin production on the company's 8th-generation manufacturing line later this year. Here's hoping for a demo connecting one of these displays to an HDMI-1.3 equipped, 1080p24 frame rate displaying slimline $500 second generation Blu-ray player in the next few days.
Samsung's 70-inch LCD to hit stores in Q1 2007
We've drooled enough over this beast of an LCD, and had a small fit when we found out it would make it further than an expo floor, but now we're hearing actual dates, and that's always good news. While the spec list hasn't changed (or not that we're aware of, anyway), this beauty has moved up from "the first half of 2007" to "February" of next year. Additionally, versions sporting full 1080p support will be out "by March," and will fall under its second 7G lineup, which should be able to pump out "one million 70-inch LCD TV panels annually." Unfortunately, we still have no idea just how enormous the pricetag on this behemoth will be, but rest assured, we'll keep you updated on the progress.

Sure, those 100-inch LCDs are all well and good if your living room happens to encompass a large international tradeshow at all times, but if you'd prefer an LCD TV you can actually purchase and lug home for reals, Samsung's new 70-incher is your biggest option yet. They're busting out this monster in the first half of 2007, and are packing in all the niceties like a 2000:1 contrast ratio, a sub-8ms response time, 600 nits of brightness and of course a juicy 1080p resolution. The display bests the 65-incher from Sharp which currently holds the LCD throne, and Samsung will be showing it off at the upcoming International Meeting on Information Displays on the 23rd of this month -- where we doubt it will fail to impress.[Via HD Beat, thanks Nandini]
Samsung announces biggest consumer LCD available: 70-inch, 1080p
Just when we found the perfect spot to put the Sharp 65-inch LC-65D90U LCD, Samsung has announced their 70-inch LCD will be available to consumers during the first half of 2007. Sporting a full 1080p resolution, 2000:1 contrast ratio, sub-8ms reponse time and 120hz refresh rate, Samsung thinks it will compete will with similar large plasma HDTVs. While LG still has the crown of the biggest LCD we've heard about, this will be the biggest one actually available. It will be shown publicly for the first time on the 23rd at the International Meeting on Information Displays (IMID) 2006 in Korea, which is exactly far off enough to get a plane ticket, fly across the Pacific and check it out before you order one.
