Among the mountains of sexy technology on the market, it's fair to say that hearing aids don't feature too highly when it comes to innovation and aspirational living. But as Starkey Hearing Technologies demonstrated with its Livio AI device last year, there's a lot to be done in this field -- and now its smart hearing aid has gotten even smarter.
Ford acquires Livio to create a standard for in-car mobile app integration
Ford was quick to embrace in-car mobile app integration through its AppLink technology, but it wants a true industry standard to boost adoption. The company is tackling this problem this today by acquiring Livio, best-known for its Livio Connect in-car app gateway. Valued at under $10 million, the buyout will help Ford create a single app interface that any automaker could use. Mobile developers would only have to support one format to reach many infotainment units -- as long as Ford's rivals are willing to set aside their own platforms, of course. In the meantime, Ford is being cautious. It intends to keep Livio as a separate brand that will serve GM and other existing customers for the foreseeable future.
Livio Internet-Radio App available for Pioneer's App Radio, woo
In "bolting the stable door two days after the CES horse has bolted news," in-car radio company Livio just officially announced that you'll be able to get the app on Pioneer's AppRadio 2 car stereo (announced Monday). Since one of our gripes with the initial AppRadio was its lack of additional apps, we'll happily take everything more we can get on the $500 in-car-entertainment system of choice. Livio Radio outs Bluetooth Internet Radio Kit for iPod, iPhone, but you can just call it 'The Kit'
Livio Radio's Bluetooth Internet Radio Car Kit may not be the most mellifluous product name we've ever heard, but it's certainly an apt one. Known as "The Kit" for short, this plug-and-play device allows drivers to stream music from their iPhone or iPod Touch, directly through their car's FM radio. The system also boasts hands-free Bluetooth calling capabilities and a set buttons that let you control Livio's Car Internet Radio application, providing access to over 45,000 radio stations with no monthly fees. Livio's NPR Radio tunes more than just NPR, contrary to popular belief
The first Livio Radio hit the scene in April, and now the second one is splashing down in an attempt to draw the attention of those who considering themselves amongst the sophisticated. At first glance, we assumed that the curiously titled NPR Radio would tune into NPR broadcasts only, though our hopes of such a marvelously awesome and useless device were quickly dashed after perusing the press release. In reality, the internet radio functions just like any other web radio (via Ethernet or WiFi, mind you), though it does enable users to quickly store and access their favorite NPR stations with a convenient "my NPR" button on the front of the device. If you're looking to bring a few more fireside chats into your cozy little den, this one can be snapped up today for a penny under $200.
Pandora-lovin' Livio Radio sports 'thumbs up / down' controls
Much like digital photo frames, the whole internet radio sector is getting really, really tired. Thankfully, a little known company by the name of Livio is breaking in to spice things up. The simply titled (and classically styled) Livio Radio is the first and only dedicated device to offer Pandora's signature "thumbs up, thumbs down" controls on both the front panel and a remote, and while we suppose Pandora will be plenty for most of the targeted customers, it can also tune into a comprehensive list of other validated internet radio stations from around the world through Reciva. Outside of that, functionality is indeed limited, but Livio designed this thing to be a simple WiFi mix tape of sorts, not a bona fide home audio player. Naturally, all that's required to get tunes streaming is an AC outlet and an internet connection, so you can feel free to leave your PC / laptop at home. It's shipping now directly from Livio for $150, and the full release is after the break.
