English singer, musician and songwriter Peter Gabriel expanded his music repertioire to include an iOS app called MusicTiles. Gabriel follows in the footsteps of other musicians like Neil Young and David Gilmour who have embraced Apple's platform as a way to promote their music. MusicTiles is a music-mixing app filled with tracks from Gabriel's So album. The app lets you remix these songs using a simple tile-based interface. Each tile represents a different track (guitar, vocal, etc.) in the song and it lets you add and remove them at will. The latest version of the app adds support for the iPad. You can check out a demo of the app in the video below. MusicTiles is available for US$2.99 from the iOS App Store. [Via Engadget]

Neil Young already had a go at changing the music world, but now it's Peter Gabriel's turn to mix up the scene. The acclaimed artist has introduced a new app known as MusicTiles, which allows users to create and share remixes of their favorite tunes with a simple tile interface. Each tile represents a basic element of the song -- be it a guitar track, drums or vocals -- which can then be blended together with other elements. Users can then manipulate the effects and timing of the individual components by placing them in different arrangements. MusicTiles costs $2.99 and is available today for the iPad and iPhone. Once the app is downloaded, users can then make in-app purchases of songs and albums. The app's creators suggest that any professionally produced song can be transformed into the MusicTiles format. Artists need only to submit the master stems of their work. You'll find a demo of the app after the break, which reveals some of the remix possibilities for Peter Gabriel's hit "Sledgehammer". This is the new stuff, indeed.

British Supermarket behemoth Tesco has snapped up WE7, a streaming music service co-founded by Peter Gabriel that offers personalized radio stations to users, for £10.8 million ($16.7 million). The UK's biggest supermarket has purchased 91 percent of the company, with the remaining stake set to be transferred over shortly. It looks like the chain will use WE7's infrastructure and resources as the spine for a beefier music service as British supermarkets look to diversify into the entertainment market following its purchase of Blinkbox last year.

As if he wasn't already busy, what with being the music legend and all... Peter Gabriel's playlist construction kit The Filter, already available free for iTunes for Windows, is now entering 2.0 alpha test for Mac users. The Filter automatically loads your iPod with custom, mood-relevant playlists and explores your music collection for those gems gathering dust in the corners.Registration for the alpha test is by invitation for now, so you can either send an email from the download page or go straight to the alpha registration and wait to hear back. May I suggest queuing up Plays Live while you wait? Thanks, Shaun!
