The People's Operator launches in the UK -- a charitable MVNO for data haters
Another mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) has joined the fray in the UK today -- The People's Operator (TPO). The main hook of this entrant is relatively low calling and text costs, and with 25% of the company's profits going to its own charitable foundation, you know all that nattering is doing some good (you can also assign 10% of your monthly spend to a specific cause). You should get decent coverage piggybacking on EE's towers, and it's expected to share its new 4G network with TPO in the future. The MVNO doesn't really cater to those who like their data, however, as the current cost is a flat 12.5p per MB, and the pay-as-you-go bundles launching in December don't come much cheaper (£17.50 per month for a 500MB allowance). That may well put off smartphone users, as several other carriers like Three and giffgaff offer unlimited data at similar prices. Pay monthly contracts and handsets are coming soon, but at the moment, TPO is a PAYG, SIM-only provider. iSuppli: OLED panel shortage a concern for Android smartphone makers
Everyone wants an OLED display on their cellphone, right? Ok, maybe not everybody, especially when compared to regular AMOLED, but we certainly want, no demand, a 4-plus inch Super AMOLED on our next Android smartphone. Problem is, there just aren't enough to go around according to iSuppli. An issue compounded by the fact that Samsung, the world's largest AMOLED panel manufacturer, gets first crack at its displays in support of its massive growth plans for 2010, leaving companies like HTC to look elsewhere as we've already heard. That leaves LG, the only other source for small AMOLED panels, to shoulder the burden until the two can ramp up production, or until more players can enter the market. Samsung hopes to significantly boost production in 2012 when it brings a new $2.2 billion AMOLED facility on-line. Meanwhile, Taiwan-based AU Optronics and TPO Display Corp. plan to introduce AMOLED products by the end of 2010 or early 2011. Until then there's always the venerable LCD which will continue to dwarf AMOLED shipments for many years to come. See the numbers after the break.
Small LCDs with integrated backlight sensor use 30% less juice
We seem to have been draining our phone batteries even faster than usual this week, so we find TPO's power-saving display sensor tech to be pretty encouraging news for the future. The Taiwanese display manufacturer has figured out how to integrate ambient light sensors directly into a standard LCD screen, resulting in more accurate light readings than the usual external sensor setup. The system can also compensate for temperature with the addition of a black level sensor, which means the screen can detect light levels from 3 to 10,000 lux and adjust the backlight accordingly. The sensor tech is designed for small screens in mobile devices, and TPO estimates that the setup reduces overall power consumption around 30% under normal use, which would maybe let us get through a day without resorting to buying that enormous external battery pack we've been dreading. No word on when we'll see these screens hit the consumer level, but TPO says mass production won't start until 2008, so better keep that charger handy for a while.
