TracFone's $45 Straight Talk unlimited plan punishes you with brutal hardware
They say "there's no such thing as a free lunch." They also say "there's no such thing as an unlimited contract-free $45 monthly unlimited plan that offers awesome phones," so we're not terribly surprised to see that TracFone's new blowout offering -- dubbed Straight Talk -- is rife with ancient Motorolas (with a RAZR V3a thrown in for good measure, of course) and an LG flip that we're pretty sure we saw McClane use in the first Die Hard. Then again, the plan becomes the one of the cheapest for unlimited voice and text anywhere -- and if you're less heavy on the minutes you can even step down to 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts for $30 -- so we'll let it slide. But seriously, TracFone, we expect a V9 by 2012.[Via Phone Scoop]
Motorola W385, new LG Chocolates live on Verizon
Thinking back to when we first caught wind of it, the turnaround on the ambiguously named VX8550 Chocolate from LG wasn't that bad -- but the same can't be said of Verizon's other retail introduction today, the midrange Motorola W385. This thing's been kicking around as a rumored Big Red device since April at the latest -- and yes, we'll admit that our sense of time is a bit skewed, but that's, like, forever. Up close with the Motorola W385, LG orange enV for Verizon
We've known these two were in the pipe, but there's something about big, pretty pictures that really drives the point home. First up is the Motorola W385, an entry-level flip that borrows some design cues from its KRZR stablemate while deleting the external music controls and "ooh, shiny" finish. The orange VX9900 enV is... well, orange -- a color probably well-suited for the phone's decidedly funky attitude and target demo. Motorola W385, black U740 in the pipe for Verizon
Not feeling the Samsung U740's champagne hue? Good news: Verizon's latest rebate form reveals that a black version is in the works, arguably more appropriate for the phone's largely business-oriented demographic. Other goodies on the form are few and far between, though our tipster does point out that the Motorola W385 makes an appearance, offering KRZR-like styling in a lower-end package. No word on release for either, though the rebates expire on May 13 -- take that for what you will.[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
Motorola's four CDMA multimedia cellphones: ROKR Z6m, RAZR maxx Ve, W385 and W355
Motorola just went official with four new CDMA handsets ready to hit before July: the MOTOROKR Z6m slider (left), MOTORAZR maxx Ve clam (right), and mass market W385 and W355. First up, the RAZR maxx Ve king headed to Verizon which Moto has been teasing us with for a few months. It's what we expected: ultra-thin, EVDO, and 2 megapixel camera with integrated music player and touch-sensitive controls. The Z6m slider (which looks like a CDMA RIZR Z3) hopes to shake the original (E1) ROKR's fumbled hype. The Z6m multi-modal slider packs a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth or 3.5-mm headphone jack to get tethered, and up to 2GB of removable memory. The W385 and W355 bring multimedia on a budget with a mix of GPS location services, Bluetooth, and FM radio.
