It's been a long time in the making, but the BlackBerry Desktop Software for PCs has just made the jump from version 6.1 to 7.0. Despite the significant numeric hurdle, the software is scant for new features and only a handful of known issues have been fixed. New to the revision, the organizer synchronization component has been overhauled for easier setup and BlackBerry users may now import individual pictures and videos from within the utility -- as if USB Mass Storage mode didn't work well enough. A bug that incorrectly minimized the software to the system tray has been resolved, along with a couple of annoyances that relate only to BES users. Meanwhile, the list of known issues is nearly four pages long. Yikes. Ever get the feeling this software release could've been more aptly named version 6.1.0.37?

RIM's BlackBerry Desktop app for the Mac got a much-needed feature boost today with the launch of v2.1 with support for the PlayBook. The new release adds media sync support via drag and drop over USB and WiFi, as well as the almost magical ability to sync music and pics to iTunes and iPhoto. Sadly, the latter only supports a USB connection, but heck, we'll take what we can get, right? Considering RIM's woes of late, we're happy to see this isn't affecting support for the oft unsupported platform. Follow the read link to grab the release then head right back and let us know if this new bit of sync nirvana is everything you hoped it'd be.

It's not as cool as BlackBerry 6 on your phone, of course -- but owners of RIM devices are probably going to want to check out the latest release of BlackBerry Desktop, which adds new settings transfer capabilities, a new-from-the-ground-up UI, and integrated Media Sync -- including support for the trick WiFi sync mode that's new in BlackBerry 6. It's only available for PCs at the moment, but take heart, Mac owners: 6.0's UI updates were designed to bring the PC software up to snuff with what you'd already had, anyway. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac on September 25th?

Even though the iPhone, in its several iterations, is most likely the smartphone of choice for the discerning Mac user, that doesn't mean Mac users choose the iPhone exclusively. In fact, RIM's BlackBerry device still commands a sizable share of the smartphone market. So, if you happen to be one of those people who use a Mac and a BlackBerry, wouldn't it be nice if both of your devices could work together by synchronizing files, music, video and more seamlessly via an application supplied by RIM themselves to maximize compatibility? Well, that dream may become a reality according to a tipster who gave the scoop to the folks at the Boy Genius Report. According the the Boy himself, RIM is poised to give Mac and BlackBerry users something they've sorely needed: a brand new, updated and super cool BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac on September 25th. This information isn't 100% confirmed, but Boy Genius does let it slip that he's using a previous build of the software and that it is "running beautifully." So, I guess that's a good sign this is probably one dream that will, in fact, come true -- and very soon.

It's been a long time coming, but there's finally light at the end of the tunnel for Mac-toting BlackBerry fans -- BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac is scheduled for release this month, and a beta version has already leaked out. Unlike a certain scrappy competitor's hacky solution, BBDM lets you sync with iTunes, Address Book, and iCal without any monkey business, and you'll also be able to manage and install applications and other files right from your desktop. We haven't tried the beta (we're not pushing our Snow Leopard luck), but we hear it's stable -- do let us know how things turn out if you're brave enough to install it.[Thanks, bighap]
