Lyft promises to make all rides carbon neutral
Lyft announced today that it will purchase enough carbon offsets to make every Lyft ride carbon neutral. Just within the first year of this program, the company says it will put millions of dollars towards the effort and expects to offset over a million metric tons of carbon. To make every ride carbon neutral, Lyft will fund "emission mitigation efforts, including the reduction of emissions in the automotive manufacturing process, forestry projects and the capture of emissions from landfills." The company 3Degrees will work with Lyft on the effort.
Google uses wind and solar to offset all of its operational energy use
In late 2016, Google announced that it expected to offset all of its office and data center electricity use with 100 percent renewable energy in 2017. Today, the company says it achieved that goal. Google has been working on reducing its carbon footprint and purchasing more renewable energy for some time. In 2007, it committed to being carbon neutral, which it did by purchasing solar and wind energy as well as carbon offsets, and throughout the years, it has reduced its reliance on offsets and purchased greater amounts of renewable energy. In 2017, for every kilowatt-hour of energy Google's operations consumed, it added a kilowatt-hour of solar and wind energy to the grid.
Microsoft puts a price on carbon, says its footprint will be neutral by July
We've seen quite a few tech companies boast about their environmental efforts in recent years, and it looks like you can now also add Microsoft to the list of those attempting to be carbon neutral. As you might expect, while that includes some alternative energy efforts and energy-saving measures, it also makes use of a carbon offset program to make up the difference, which will see Microsoft put money into an internal fund for emissions it's not able to offset through other means. That means Microsoft will be able to declare itself carbon neutral fairly soon -- by the start of the 2013 fiscal year, to be specific, which actually begins this July.
