It belts out severe weather alerts as storms are barreling towards your domicile. It acts as a decent bedroom stereo. And it wakes you and the SO up to your own favorite jams -- all while charging your iPod or iPhone throughout the night. If those amenities sound like must-haves in your own life, you might be interested in knowing that iLuv's iMM183 dual dock alarm clock is now shipping, nearly a full year after being originally announced at CES. The pain? $149.99 -- but hey, that's a small price to pay to keep your dear media player / handset out of a tornado's eye, right?

Ask Engadget: Best iPhone 3G (3GS) alarm clock / radio?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Bora (from Turkey, he'll have you know), who is sick and tired of waking up to bleeps, wails and static-filled tunes not on his iPhone.

"I own an iPhone 3G and I'm looking for a decent speaker / alarm clock for it. I am going to listen music in a mid-sized room, so I want nice quality speakers with solid bass. I also want to use it as an alarm clock, so it would be great if there is such a feature. The price can be low-mid to mid-high range. I was looking at the Klipsch iGroove SXT; it's powerful, slick and the reviews are good, but it doesn't have an alarm clock feature. It's no deal breaker if I can set it up from the iPhone, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm open to recommendations. Thanks!"

Don't front -- we know a big swath of you loyal iPhone owners out there also have some sort of docking alarm clock / radio, so why not share your experience(s) with yours? It's easy, we promise.

Yamaha kicks out TSX-W80, TSX-70 iPod docks / clock radios

It may not go to eleven, but Yamaha's new TSX-W80 iPod dock at least pack some knobs that you'll no doubt be tempted to turn all the way up, and just the right blend of retro good looks and newfangled technology to stand out in a crowded field. That includes a so-called AirWired cradle that'll let you use your iPod or iPhone as a remote, a dock on the main unit itself to charge your iPod, and a choice of three different colors (with matching LED displays) to suit your style. Those looking for something a bit more simple and less eye-catching can also opt for Yamaha's new TSX-70 model (pictured after the break), which drops the AirWired controller but hangs onto the standard iPod dock and all the basic clock radio functionality you'd expect. No word on a release over here just yet, but it looks like both should be available in Japan shortly.

Sonoro Eklipse clock radio / iPod dock gets official, priced

This one's been making the rounds in Europe for some time now, and finally passed through the FCC late last year, but it looks like Sonoro's Eklipse iPod dock / CD player / clock radio has only just recently gotten fully official in the US, and given a price. Unfortunately, while it has dropped a bit compared to the Euro conversion, it is still a fairly hefty $550, which will buy you 7.5W of power output, a nice little OLED display, a compact remote, and an auxiliary jack in case the iPod dock and slot-load CD player aren't enough options for you. There's still no official word on a release date, however, but it looks like at least one retailer is now taking pre-orders for it.

Man, iLuv's on a roll like no other. Practically every week since the onset of December '08 the company has pushed out a new alarm clock of some kind, and it has apparently saved the big boy for CES. Announced today, the iMM183 Hi-Fi Dual Dock Alarm Clock with Weather Band Radio promises to charge both you and your lover's iPod / iPhone 3G while providing NOAA emergency alerts of impending weather-related doom. There's also an obligatory auxiliary input for non-Apple devices, and the LED warning indicator should do a decent job of telling you what sort of catastrophe is looming. iLuv's iNT170 internet radio-alarm appears, no one's too excited

Not to be left out, iLuv's also brought out another internet radio / alarm combo and it looks exactly like you'd think it would. Only cooler. The iNT170's packing access to 15,000 radio stations and podcasts through its built-in WiFi, aka INTERNET (see photo). It's got two 2.5 watt jAura sound speakers, a dual alarm clock, plus a 3.5mm line-in if you need to plug in your PMP. The clock self-updates via INTERNET, so you'll never be able to use that Daylight Saving Time excuse for being late to work again (we recommend the "flooded basement" or "sick cat" in its stead), and you'll have the option to wake to INTERNET or regular radio in addition to the old standby buzzer. It's available now for $199.

Sonoro's saucy Swarovski-covered elements stardust radio demands $2,500

"Sonoro" and "absurdly expensive" have always gone hand-in-hand, but even we're a bit taken aback by the sticker on this one. The company's latest example of extravagance is the elements stardust, an "exclusive" AM / FM / MP3 clock radio that's smothered from one end to the other in Swarovski crystals. This thing's not all looks, though -- it's got a LED-illuminated metal ring for quick-touch control of tuning and volume, a full-range speaker, and an integrated bass reflex tube. Too bad you'll have to sashay down to Saks Fifth Avenue with $2,500 and an evil grin in order to take one home.

iHome ships rotatable iH41 iPod alarm clock

We've heard about iHome's twistable iH41 since CES, but it looks like the outfit finally got its act together and began to ship these out. Designed specifically for the iPod touch and its variable aspect screen, this unit can be flipped for easy orientation switching that enables users to view widescreen videos while it's docked and charging; when rotated, the digital clock display will also adjust to "complement the position of the unit." Notably, there's no mention of iPhone / iPhone 3G compatibility, but you do get a handy remote thrown in should you decide to cough up $79.99.

iLuv kicks out i168 and i169 HD Radio alarm clocks

Something's really wrong with the world if more than a few months pass by without a new iPod alarm clock from iLuv, so we suppose everyone's a-okay for a few more months now. Announced today, the firm has introduced its first pair of HD Radio clocks, and sure enough, one of 'em plays nice with Cupertino's darling. The i169 would be that player, which offers up a mostly black motif, dual stereo speakers, remote, iPod dock, AM / FM / HD Radio reception, an auxiliary input and dual alarm settings for good measure. As for the currently available i168, it provides most everything you read up there sans the iPod compatibility, but then again, it only demands $89.99. What about the i169, you ask? It'll set you back a cool $169.99 when it lands in "early May." Full release waiting after the break.

iHome iP99 claims to be first iPhone-friendly clock radio, isn't

Oh sure, the iHome iP99 is certainly a welcome addition to the fray, but the first iPhone-compatible clock radio it isn't. Nevertheless, this device claims to be able to play back tunes on your handset without that sanity-killing interference that's so common on most iPod stereo systems. While blasting out tunes, users can still expect to receive calls while it's charging, and if you're currently rolling sans an iPhone, it'll also play nice with all docking iPod models. Per usual, there's an AM / FM tuner, auxiliary input, a variety of wake modes, dual alarm settings, backlit buttons and a remote control for switching tracks / controlling volume from afar. Of course, by the time this thing lands in June for $149.99, we could be testing to see if it works with an all new iPhone.

Update: We've been informed that what was really supposed to be said here was that it's "is the first clock radio available for purchase that is designed specifically for the iPhone," and it's been awarded the coveted "Works with iPhone" sticker from Apple itself. Needless to say, this bad boy has all the shielding you'll need.

Designer LEXON Jet clocks do dot-matrix with style

It may not boast any fancy or slightly terrifying measures to haul you out of bed in the morning, or pack the DIY flavor of some clocks we seen, but if you just want to keep things simple and stylish you could certainly do a lot worse than one of these new LEXON jet clocks from designer Theo Williams. Available in wall/desk clock (pictured above), clock radio or travel alarm clock versions, the clocks each boast an electroluminescent backlit display, which lights up all your vital information (including the temperature) dot-matrix-style. You can also get the clocks in your choice of gold or brushed aluminum finishes, although it seems that only the wall clock model is available right now, with it setting you back €45 (or just under $70).

Hands-on with Sonoro's cubo elements and cubo fusion clock radios

Sonoro has been hawking its appropriately named "cubo" clock radio in Europe for a while now, a fashionable little beast that comes in a wide variety of colors (seriously, check the gallery) and packs a bassy punch. CES 2008 marks the German firm's first official entrance into the US market, where it will be first selling the original cubo -- just your standard AM / FM / CD device -- and then following on with a series of more interesting devices later in the year. We had a chance to check out the new models, the cubo elements and cubo fusion, and we're dazzled by their glossy sheen, giant, HAL-like controls, and bright, attractive displays. The cubo elements will be available in both AM / FM and FM / internet radio versions, the latter of which is compatible with an external dock for controlling and charging the iPod of your choice (though the AM / FM model has an AUX in, so you can still pipe in your external tunes that way). The cubo fusion ups the ante with an integrated iPod dock -- no external accessory necessary -- and a CD player, but loses the internet radio which could be a deal breaker for some folks. Have a gander at the gallery here, and notice the white gloves all the Sonoro peeps are wearing -- they take that black lacquer finish pretty seriously!

Cue Radio plays nice with your iPod

Another ~~day~~ CES, another clock radio that revolves around Apple's darling. This go 'round, we've got Cue Acoustics getting into the exceedingly oversaturated market with its simply-titled Cue Radio. As you can probably glean from its name, this "high-end" device packs an AM / FM radio, an integrated speaker, LCD display, a simplistic, presumably Cupertino-approved design and an obligatory iPod dock on the top. Sadly, we've no details regarding price / availability, but it's not like you don't already have eight perfectly suitable alternatives scattered about your domicile.

Phillips' AJL308 clock radio / digital photo frame is like a real life widget

If you've ever wanted to pop up Dashboard outside of the desktop, this is probably as close as you can get. Phillips' multi-purpose clock radio / photo frame comes across like a swipe from the widget world, with its pleasant blue backdrop, "Polaroid" photo section, and cutesy little calendar page. If we didn't know better, we'd swear someone from Yahoo! Widgets was behind this. But alas, it's a bona fide Phillips nightstand-sitter, complete with a built in FM tuner, audio player (MP3 / WMA), USB, SD and MMC connectivity, dual alarm times, and soothing nature sounds. Sure, it won't tell you the weather, notify you of new emails, or play Sudoku... but it only costs a $129.99.

RCA's RP5500i clock radio hearts your iPod

An alarm clock blaring in the early AM is typically not a pleasant event, but RCA is attempting to make the experience a bit less frustrating by waking you with your favorite tunes. The RP5500i clock radio joins the already saturated iPod clock market, but throws in those huge LED digits, USB connectivity, an AM / FM tuner, automatic time setting, adjustable brightness, built-in speakers, and best of all, a programmable snooze (huzzah!). $69.99 to make your mornings a tad more endurable.
