It's all fun and games until the FBI comes a knocking. CyberHome USA of Fremont, CA just had more than 20,000 of their CyberHome-branded DVD players seized from a warehouse by a task force which included local, state and federal agencies. Turns out they've neglected royalty payments to Philips, to the tune of millions of dollars. Their DVD players and other consumer tech is sold through outlets such as Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, Target and Wal-Mart, and they happen to be "one of the world's largest manufacturers and importers of DVD devices." California has laws on the books that provide for up to three years in prison and fines up to $500,000 for dealing with more than 1,000 items bearing a counterfeit mark, which CyberHome seems to have been doing in spades ever since Philips revoked their license. The players were loaded onto eight tractor-trailers, and are worth an estimated $2 million at retail. We're not exactly sure what the police plan to do with all that tech, but we're sure it'll involve a lot of "Starsky & Hutch - The Complete Second Season."

VintageComputing.com's RedWolf decided to try his own NES mod: cramming a crappy CyberHome CH-DVD 300 DVD player into the gutted skin of an NES. He got the power button to work (something about latching versus momentary buttons), embedded the IR sensor in the player one controller port, and the piece de resistance: the reset button ejects the drive-tray, lifting up the flap and everything!RedWolf's guide is extremely... thorough, featuing dozens of pictures of mod-pr0n, and even a video of the final product opening up and ejecting its disc (SFW). Sure the PQI mPack p600 already did all that, but try getting one of those in the US. Cyberhome has announced two new media players, the PMP 4000 and PMP 7000 that both will feature 1080i playback via a component output. Not satisfied? try MPEG 1/2/4, h.264, WMV, DivX and Xvid format support on for size. Sounds nice, no word on the resolution of the screen itself, but besides the 20GB hard drive, the devices also read SD cards, Memory Stick, MMC, Compact Flash and Smart Media cards. They support Windows Media DRM and can record video directly to the device from an external source. The only difference between the two appears to be screen size, with the 4" PMP 4000 going on sale in January for $399, with the 7" 7000 to have a price and date TBA. For that, you also get an external battery & DVD player (what, no Blu-ray?). I'm sure we'll have more information on this soon, they will be on display at CES in January. Steve Jobs are you listening?
