    The best microSD cards

    by

    03.06.2020

By Nathan Edwards This post was done in partnership with Wirecutter. When readers choose to buy Wirecutter's independently chosen editorial picks, Wirecutter and Engadget may earn affiliate commission. Read the full guide to microSD cards. After testing more than 20 new and updated microSD cards, we've found that the SanDisk MicroSDXC card for Nintendo Switch (128 GB) is the best for most phones, tablets, and, yes, Nintendo Switches, but there are several other cards that work fine. The hard part is finding a real one; the online marketplaces are flooded with counterfeits. The Switch card is fast, consistent, comes from a reputable company, has a picture of a mushroom on it, and works in anything that takes a microSDXC card, not just the Switch. Most of the 128 GB cards we tested are fast enough but are more expensive and harder to find, or were slower than the Switch card in one or more tests. The Switch card performed well in all of them and (for now, at least) is easy to find without sorting through a bunch of third-party sellers hawking fakes. If the SanDisk Switch card is too expensive or unavailable from first-party sellers, or if you need a card that's on GoPro's compatibility list, get the Samsung Evo Select (128 GB). The Evo Select is an Amazon-exclusive rebrand of the Samsung Evo Plus, and it's almost always available. Its random write speeds aren't as good as the Switch card's, so it's not as good for running apps or operating systems, but its sequential speeds are right up there, so it's great for media storage and recording, and it's usually a buck or two cheaper. We have found that 128 GB microSD cards are the most cost-effective capacity right now. But if you don't need all that space or you just want to save a few bucks, we recommend any of the following cards: The SanDisk MicroSDXC card for Nintendo Switch (64 GB) is among the fastest cards we tested in every benchmark, but the 64 GB capacities of the Evo Select or the Kingston Canvas React, Canvas Go, and Canvas Select are fine too.

Following the powerful One X 360 camera (and some fun updates), Insta360 is now back with a rather eccentric device that aims to make better use of your VR headsets. The new Insta360 Evo is a dual-mode camera that captures 360 content when folded into a cube, as well as 180 3D content when unfolded (remember Lenovo's VR camera?). What's more, this convertible camera can stream freshly captured content directly to the likes of HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR, which will likely motivate users to create more VR content.

The annual Evolution Championship Series (Evo) has revealed the game roster for its 2019 eSports tournament and there's one notable absence. Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube -- widely recognized as the best title in the series for competitive play -- didn't make the cut this year. In its place is the latest entry in Nintendo's crossover beat-em-up franchise, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Switch. It will take its place in the finals arena along with Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle.

Negan might be tied up in the latest season of The Walking Dead, but that doesn't mean he can't bash a few skulls in the latest Tekken video game. That's right, the iconic Saviors leader (and archenemy of Rick Grimes and company) is coming to Tekken 7 as part of the game's season two DLC pass. Bandai Namco revealed the character in a teaser video released during the annual EVO fighting game tournament. There was no gameplay, though, just a hint of Negan's leather jacket, red scarf and lethal baseball bat, Lucille, as well as a few lines delivered by actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

How to watch the Evo 2018 fighting games tournament

The biggest annual fighting game tournament is happening this weekend in Las Vegas, but you don't have to go to Sin City to watch players virtually pummel each other. You can watch Evo 2018 as it unfolds on the tournament's official Twitch channels -- more specifically, Evo will stream a different event on each of its seven official channels, though you'll catch all Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition games on Capcom Fighters. The tournament will feature Street Fighter 5, Super Smash Bros. and Tekken like it's been doing for years, along with new addition Dragon Ball FighterZ.

EVO 2018 lineup adds 'Dragon Ball FighterZ'

This year's EVO, arguably the biggest fighting game tournament, will feature eight titles in Las Vegas this year, including established favorites like Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7 and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, however, will not be making an appearance this time. The series has regularly appeared at the tournament, but the newest addition apparently hasn't made the cut. Don't worry though, in its place there are new games!

The EVO 2017 championship -- which is the premier, annual tournament for fighting games -- took place this weekend. The event culminated in the Street Fighter V finals, which saw Japanese god Tokido battle through the loser's bracket with his signature Akuma to defeat American Karin main Punk and take this year's title. That wasn't all the crowd had to be hyped about, though, with Capcom using the occasion to reveal the next SFV DLC character and first addition from the Final Fight franchise: Comically oversized brawler Abigail.

If you don't have any plans to go outside this weekend, here's something you can do. The EVO 2017 fighting game championships, which feature titles including Street Fighter V and Super Smash Bros., are kicking off today, with the finals set to take place on Sunday, July 16th. You can stream most of the action via Evo's Twitch channels (the main one is embedded below), as well as others like CapcomFighters, Tekken and NetherRealm. And, similar to last year, you'll be able to watch the Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. finals on TV thanks to ESPN2 and Disney XD, respectively. Sure, you'd probably rather be in Las Vegas watching the competition live, but at least you'll be more comfortable this way.

In Japan, Pro gamers can be a bit of a big deal. Yet, despite their celebrity status, there's only one gamer who's managed to get their own manga series. Daigo Umehara is the man with that honor. Considered to be one of the best Street Fighter players on the planet, he currently holds a Guinness World Record for being the game's most successful pro fighter. Now, thanks to his huge popularity, UDON Entertainment has opted to bring that manga series over to the west.

  • HTC's high-end Bolt is a fast, fascinating Sprint exclusive

No one would fault you if you thought HTC was done making high-end smartphones for the year. It wasn't perfect, but the HTC 10 was a highly respectable piece of kit. And HTC's design and production fingerprints can be found all over both of Google's new Pixel phones. That's a decent string of smartphones for 2016, but HTC had to go and partner up with Sprint on the curious new Bolt, a device meant to highlight Sprint's high-speed 3x20MHz carrier aggregation. Fair enough, but what makes the $599 Bolt so interesting is how it takes the 10's formula and improves on it.

Ozobot's Bit impressed us a few years ago with its simple take on programming education: kids just need to draw lines on a piece of paper or mobile device to program the tiny robot. As they get more comfortable, they can start to program on mobile devices and computers. Now Ozobot is taking a major step forward with the $100 Evo, a new robot that has sensors to interact with its environment, lights, a speaker and social capabilities. Basically, it's like a tiny Star Wars droid that you can program on your own.
