Take the chaotic backwoods setting of Far Cry 5, add a dash of Fallout 76 and a sprinkle of Rust, and you've got Far Cry New Dawn, the latest game in Ubisoft's open-world action-adventure series. New Dawn is the radiation-soaked sequel to Far Cry 5, and it's set to hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on February 15th, 2019.

'Far Cry 5' is deeper than you think

Far Cry 5 is the most socially relevant game in the series yet. This is the first time Ubisoft has brought the open world franchise to America -- specifically, to the wilderness of Montana. But it's more than just another free for all shooter. The game is really a statement on the increasing influence of violent religious extremism in the US, and the need for good people to take a stand against them. While we got a brief glimpse at the game's partner mechanics at E3, we recently a had chance to play it for a few hours, and came away mostly impressed.

Live-action 'Far Cry 5' short film heads to Amazon Prime

Far Cry 5 is shaping up to be the most intriguing entry in the long-running series. It's the first Far Cry game to be set in America, and it's also a timely look at religious extremism. You'll be able to get an early glimpse at its world with Inside Eden's Gate, a live-action short film that's headed to Amazon Prime video on March 5. It'll follow a group of vloggers as they investigate the doomsday cult, The Project at Eden's Gate, in Montana. The short will star Kyle Gallner (American Sniper) and Greg Bryk (A History of Violence), who also plays the head of Eden's Gate in Far Cry 5. We're still awaiting more details on this short film, but at first glance it seems like an intriguing way to get players ready for Far Cry 5. Of course, video game films haven't exactly been successful (just look at the horrific 2008 Far Cry movie). But a streaming short film is a much lower risk than a traditional theatrical release.

'Far Cry 5' season pass takes you to Mars and Vietnam

It's almost time to head to Hope County, Montana. In addition to Far Cry 5's American vibes, there will be more to explore if you pony up for the game's season pass. The trio of adventures will have you battling the undead in "Dead Living Zombies," the Viet Cong in "Hours of Darkness" and gigantic spiders in "Lost on Mars." Sure, aside from "Hours of Darkness" these sound pretty over-the-top, but they aren't out of the ordinary for the series. For example, Far Cry 3 had the awesome, '80s-inspired "Blood Dragon" add-on pack that starred Michael Biehn.

In 'Far Cry 5,' your teammates might be the real stars

Far Cry 5 is one of the most anticipated games at E3 2017, even if it won't be out until 2018 -- like so many other titles previewed this week. That distant launch might be why I felt surprised that the early demo on show at Ubisoft's booth was already so polished. In typical Far Cry style, the environments are lush and detailed (and delightfully colorful too). Cultist fighters also swarm on your location and chase you through the forest, just as you'd expect. The most notable change, then, isn't the series' relocation to Montana, but the company you keep as you battle the cult. Yep, while you are still pretty much a one-man army, at least one person (or canine) has your back this time around, which not only makes things slightly easier but also affects how you play through the game.

    'Far Cry 5' has a cult-fighting dog

The next Far Cry is based in America, and our first glimpse of gameplay at Ubisoft's E3 2017 press event suggests a game where your band of misfit guns for hire are pretty darn important -- and one of them is a dog. Amazing Grace formed the soundtrack for the Far Cry 5 intro, sung by one of the antagonists as he holds a pretty darn meaty gun in the middle of a church.

'Far Cry 5' brings cult mayhem to Hope County February 27th

Far Cry 5 is going to be a little different than you might expect. The new announcement trailer paints a picture of pastoral life that lends itself surprisingly well to the franchise's familiar trappings: hunting, off-road vehicles, airplanes and guns. And it seemingly wraps it all together in a way that seems like a more grounded version of Grand Theft Auto V's depiction of a rural life of crime.

'Far Cry' is coming to America

Up until today, all of the Far Cry games have been set in far off locations. A tropical island, Africa, another tropical island, the Himalayas and prehistoric times have all played witness to the franchise's often morally ambiguous open-world first-person shooter. But now, the franchise is heading stateside. Series overlord Ubisoft has started teasing the next game in the franchise with a live-action trailer, as one does, and while there isn't a lick of CGI or gameplay, the 41-second clip does do a great job setting the game's tone.

What would happen if you took the large, open-world chaos that defines the Far Cry series, removed the guns, vehicles, modern weapons and political character motivations? You'd have Far Cry Primal -- a survival epic staged in a re-imagined stone age. It's a different, but intriguing idea. The player takes on the role of Takkar, a lone hunter trying to survive on his own in the savage land of Oros. Really, the trailer says it all.

I've been checking out Into the Pixel since my first E3. Seeing video game concept art in a gallery setting is an excellent way to unwind and get a minute or two of respite from the madness of the show floor. It's also a chance to appreciate the downright beautiful art in a format that isn't just a rote, diminutive art book that comes with the "special edition" of a video game. In the video below, Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences president Martin Rae explains what Into the Pixel is and we take a bit of a tour through the space. The standout piece this year? It's from Far Cry 4 and right above this text.

What happened not too long ago with Electronic Arts and its Origin platform appears to be happening with Ubisoft too. As Kotaku has noticed, Ubisoft's trio of tentpole releases for this fall -- Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 and The Crew -- are no longer available on Valve's game store, seemingly disappearing overnight. Curiously, older entries in each respective franchise are still available (and reasonably priced) on Gabe Newell's one-stop PC-gaming shop. Even weirder yet? VG247 has spotted that ACU and FC4 are now listed on Origin. No, it doesn't make a lot of sense especially considering Ubisoft has its own digital storefront. We've pinged the outfit's PR team for details about what's up and will update this post should we hear back. Update: As many in the comments have pointed out, all three games are in fact available on Steam once again. What was behind their removal? For now at least, Ubisoft isn't saying.

Amidst talk of its 2014 financials, Ubisoft hid a sliver of information that will please fans of open-world, first-person shooters: Far Cry 4 exists, and it's coming out this year. Ubisoft Montreal -- with the help of developers at Red Storm and the company's other dev shops in Toronto, Kiev and Shanghai -- is bringing the title to PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 18th in the US, and on November 20th in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In the fourth installment of the franchise, players will roam the mountainous terrain of Kyrat, a region of the Himalayas with a "despotic self-appointed king."

Just about anyone who has bought more than one aftermarket graphics card knows that bundled games rarely matter. They're usually year-old titles or neutered editions built only to showcase the GPU's performance for a few hours. AMD thinks its Never Settle bundle might finally get us to notice. Buy any modern Radeon HD video card from the 7770 GHz Edition on up and you'll get a download code for at least one new game you'd genuinely want to try, ranging from Far Cry 3 on basic cards to a full three-game deal that supplies Far Cry 3, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs to high rollers buying the 7900 series. There's likewise a discount for Medal of Honor: Warfighter and promises of bundles in 2013 for Bioshock Infinite and the reimagined Tomb Raider. As long as you're not dead set on springing for a GeForce board in the next few months, one of the qualifying cards might be worth a look to jumpstart your game collection.

  • Rumor: Crytek Hiring for MMO Project

    by

We here at Massively like to keep our ear to the ground when it comes to potential new MMOs, and one of the indications that a company is moving in that direction comes from job wanted ads, believe it or not. Crytek, the makers of Far Cry and the Crysis series, recently put up a job posting for a Senior IT Manager that suggests they are looking into online gaming. ShackNews reported on this ad, noting that the company is looking for someone who would help in "designing, testing, and implementing as part of the development team, the systems infrastructure for an MMO online game." Ding ding ding, them are the magic words, so start the speculation. Of course, this may just be Crytek testing the waters and not a serious commitment on their behalf, especially considering that the mention of an MMO in this ad is only a small part of the responsibilities mentioned. ShackNews also noted that Crytek filed for three trademarks over a year ago: Gface, Carvatar, and Kingdoms. Whether or not these have anything to do with a possible MMO project is anyone's guess, but it is a tantalizing possibility. We'll be sure to keep a close eye on Crytek to see if they make any more moves toward an online title. One thing is for sure: if they did create a MMO, you can bet the letters "cry" will be part of the title.

It's hard to tell at first, but there's a real PS3 hidden in there, thoroughly modded to capture the feel of Ubisoft's FarCry 2. Seeing every step in the elaborate transformation process is truly remarkable. The pictures show truly how much dedication went into this impressive mod.Of course, you're wondering how you can get one, right? Well, bit-tech.net is giving one away. Find out more details here. (Unfortunately, for UK residents only!) Should you happen to win the system, we urge you to take good care of it. This one-of-a-kind item deserves the best attention possible.

In this video interview with the developers of Far Cry 2, Ubisoft gives you a brief rundown of the story: track down an arms dealer supplying goods to both sides of some warring factions. There's also a lot of different ways to approach the game: there's a night and day system in place and depending on your actions during the day or night, the game will play out differently. Of course, the time of day will have coinciding strategies that will work to your advantage, whether you want to sneak Metal Gear Solid style or run in with guns blazing. It sounds interesting and we hope to hear more as the game nears completion.

  • Crytek shows interest in PSP development

Crytek is known for cramming high-end graphics into titles that are just as capable to give your PC a hernia as they are to entertain. However, with the Crysis developer now done with PC exclusives, the company has adopted a new strategy, one that apparently includes the PSP. A new job posting on the developer's official website notes that the company is currently seeking a PSP programmer with multiplatform experience to work out of its Budapest office, suggesting that Crytek's next project following the recently announced Crysis Warhead will target Sony's handheld. Of course, nothing is known about the developer's PSP agenda or whether that includes plans to somehow squeeze its CryEngine technology into a more bite-sized format. That leaves us wondering if we'll someday be playing Crysis on the go, or if Crytek has something entirely different up its high-def sleeves.

  • Far Cry 2 single player could last 25 hours! No 50! ... No 100!

Players looking forward to shooting their way through Far Cry 2's 50-square kilometers of African wilderness best set aside the better part of a few weeks (at least!) to do so. Varying reports suggest it could take as long as 100 hours (for compass-be-damned wanderers, no doubt) to complete the game's single player campaign alone.Ubisoft Montreal creative workhorse Clint Hocking offered us an apparently inadequate estimate when he guessed that the campaign could be completed in as little as 25 hours, before adding that to see it all "you're looking at a 100-hour play experience." And, speaking to CVG, producer Louis-Pierre Pharand landed his estimate somewhere in the middle, suggesting 50 hours of play time to completion. Regardless of the varying possibilities, it's reasonable to expect that the shooter's single player experience will be long, evidence that not all devs are drinking from the same fountain as Phil Harrison.%Gallery-6687%

Ubisoft recently released an introductory video for Far Cry 2, its upcoming human-hunt across the African plains. The trailer mixes clips of Ubi Montreal developers talking and actual gameplay footage. Although we got some footage showing off the game's engine earlier this year, we really haven't seen gameplay footage since Leipzig. The developer clips in this trailer are actually quite entertaining, with Far Cry 2's art director, Alex Amancio, explaining how the team almost got eaten by lions while camping in Africa (silly Quebecers, should have hired someone with lion-mastering experience). Far Cry 2 is expected later this year and will allegedly be the same game on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.%Gallery-6687%

  • Far Cry 2 is an impressively nice fit for PS3

    by

Many game developers have found the PS3 hardware difficult to work with ... intimidating even. Ubisoft Montreal, developer of Far Cry 2, was no exception and had some worries about developing for the PS3 in the past; however, those uncertain feelings have apparently been dispelled, according to a recent interview with tech director Dominic Guay. Guay had a lot of positive things to say, calling the raw processing power of the PS3 'impressive' and the hardware architecture a 'nice fit' for their technical designs. He appraises Blu-ray and the PS3's hard drive saying they're ideal for Far Cry 2's continuously streaming open world. The only downside is that the PS3 can't compare to some higher end PC resolutions due to memory size differences, but "it's not a big deal" says Guay. With the PS3 out for more than a year now, and developer kits out way longer than that, developers have had a lot of time getting to know the hardware they'll be developing for in the next few years. If this is a sign for anything, it must mean that we'll be hearing more and more positive comments like Dominic Guay's in the near future.
