AMD FX-4130 delivers 3.8GHz quad-core on a budget, A-Series chips get even cheaper
If you're building a starter desktop to get ready for school, you'll be glad to know that AMD is squeaking just a little more value for the dollar out of its processors. The new quad-core FX-4130 takes a 200MHz hop forward from its predecessor to a 3.8GHz base speed, and ramps up to 3.9GHz if it's feeling frisky. While it's thirstier than the earlier FX-4100 at 125W of maximum power draw, the unlocked chip's $112 retail cost is a potential sweet spot for those tailoring a system to a strict price. Anyone willing to trade overclocking support for yet more of a savings will be glad to know that AMD has been slashing the prices of its Fusion-based A-Series chips at the same time: the across-the-board cuts bring even the 2.9GHz A8-3850 down to $91. No breaks exist here for the performance crowd, alas, but AMD's new proposition might be just the excuse needed to build that budget Windows 8 PC.
Gateway updates FX and DX Series desktops with Core i5 2300 CPUs
Gateway has just announced updates to its line of desktop computers with the FX, DX, and SX Series. The new desktops will now boast Intel's Core i5 2300 processors, and Intel's HD67 Express chipset. In addition, the desktops will get a boost from newer graphics in the form of NVIDIA's GeForce GT440. The FX 6850-51 boasts 1.5GB of video memory, 1GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. Several other FX models pack Intel Core i7 CPUs, up to 9GB of memory, and up to 1.5TB hard drives, plus a choice of Blu-ray / DVD combo drives. The DX Series also boast Blu-ray drives, a hard drive expansion bay, and an up to 1.5TB SATA drive (expandable to 3.5TB total). The Gateway FX6850-51 will be available starting next week for $999, while the new DX models, which include the DX4350-43, the DX4850-27, and the DX4850-45, will be available next week with prices ranging from $599.99 to $749.99. In addition, the newly thinned down SX Series desktops (including the SX2803-25e, the SX2851-09e, the SX2851-41, and the SX2851-41e) will now boast the device dock previously seen on the DX Series, and will also be available next week with a starting price of $499.99. Gateway's FX series desktops revamped, SX / DX series find solace in Core i3 and i5
In the market for new desktop machinery? Gateway's gone ahead and given its gaming-centric FX series a facelift for the new year -- nothing Alienware-esque crazy, but we do like the accessible ports up top, right next to the control dial for LED-infused lighting effects. Enough about the superficial, let's go inside: a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor, ATI Radeon HD5850 with 1GB discrete memory, 1.5TB HDD with additional expansion bays, up to 16GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and a $1,299 starting price. There's a 16x DVD drive, and if you don't mind forking over a little extra, you can get a separate 4x BD-ROM drive. As for the rest of the lineup, while still donning old skin, the SX series has been boosted by a 2.93GHz Core i3 processor, and the DX series a 3.2GHz Core i5 and that 4x BD-ROM drive. Gateway slips out 17-inch P-7808u FX multimedia laptop
Gateway's been on a roll of late with its bargain-minded laptops, so it's no shock to see the trend continue with its latest addition to the FX lineup. The P-7808u FX is a 17-incher that's geared towards multimedia freaks, and aside from the lackluster WXGA panel, the specs aren't half bad for the price. We're talkin' a 2GHz Core 2 Quad CPU, NVIDIA's GeForce 9800M GTS graphics card (1GB of GDDR3 included), 4GB of DDR3 memory, an 8x dual-layer DVD writer, 500GB SATA hard drive, 5-in-1 multicard reader, a stately nine-cell battery, WiFi, three USB 2.0 sockets, FireWire, eSATA and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Gateway throws Core i7 CPUs into two new FX6800 gaming desktops
Although we actually got to see just how potent the Core i7 was way back in September (at least, that's what was hinted at "off the record"), the chip had yet to go on sale until this week. Now that it's had its formal launch party, Gateway's joining the masses in offering up two new FX Series PCs with Intel's freshest silicon. For the gamer on a budget, the FX6800-01 gets going at just $1,249.99 and packs a Core i7-920 processor, 3GB of DDR3 RAM and an ATI Radeon HD4850 video card. For those with cheddar to burn, the $2,999.99 FX6800-05 steps it up with a Core i7-940, ATI Radeon HD4870 X2 graphics card and 6GB of DDR3 memory. The high-end beast also includes a 1TB hard drive plus an 80GB SSD, and both models can be outfitted with a Blu-ray drive should you choose. Gateway rolls out new FX, LX series desktop PCs
Gateway isn't exactly breaking the mold here, but we're guessing it'll still move quite a few of its new FX and LX series desktop PCs, which each pack some pretty high end specs for more than reasonable prices. Like others in the FX series, the new FX6710 is aimed directly at gamers, and includes a speedy Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 processor, 6GB of RAM, a 750GB hard drive, ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics, Creative X-Fi audio, and other suitably high-end specs, all for a $1,199. The all new LX6200 model, on the other hand, is targeted at more multimedia-minded users, though gamers will probably find quite a bit to like as well, including an AMD Phenom X4 9500 quad-core Processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, the same 750GB hard drive, and 8GB of RAM standard, all for just $779. Gateway updates bevy of laptops / desktops in one fell swoop
Merely months after Gateway thrilled your soul with the introduction of all sorts of new desktops, the outfit has apparently received the upgrade bug. Starting right now, the 17-inch P-Series, 15.4-inch M-Series and 14.1-inch T-series laptops can be ordered with Intel's latest Core 2 Duo chips, more spacious hard drives and dual-layer DVD writers.
