  • Expression Media handed off by Microsoft

Users of the former iView Media image & video catalog application might have been forgiven their agita when the product was acquired by Microsoft (golly, was it really four years ago?) and incorporated into the company's Expression Studio 3 line of creative tools as Expression Media. It was the only Mac-friendly app in the Expression suite, and as such it always did seem a little bit out of place. Apparently that sentiment was also held internally, as the app now has a new home. Microsoft announced at the end of May that Expression Media 2 will be acquired and developed by Phase One, the company behind the Capture One RAW converter and several other photography products. Until the end of June, there's a free cross-product offer in play; owners of Expression Media 2 can get a Capture One license, and vice-versa. The British Journal of Photography has an interview with Phase One's CEO about the acquisition. Best of luck to the peripatetic iView team as they move on to their new challenge.

There may not be a lot of details on these apart from the fact that they support MP3 and WMA formats and each pack a built-in USB connector, but when it comes to pirate skulls and other novelty MP3 players (which somehow managed to slip under our radar at CES), we're guessing specs are a secondary concern for most. No word on pricing or availability either, but you can check out a couple more by hitting up the link below, and no doubt expect to see even more variations cropping up in the not too distant future.[Via PMP Today]

Hong Kong always gets the good stuff first. Witness the SunView PMP Projector... or more handily known as a PMPP. The little silver box is the first commercially available pico projector -- created in by Sunlink International in collaboration with iView Limited -- and is currently trickling out in small quantities (though there are plans to ramp up production). The device is an integrated PMP running Windows CE, is capable of producing a 640 x 480 projection, has an embedded 3.5-inch LCD display, and utilizes an SD slot for additional storage. There's no word on pricing -- or if this is going to make it onto our shores anytime soon -- though we're pretty sure a crafty importer can probably get one of these into your hands.[Via About Projectors]

  • Displaytech FLCOS microdisplays see action in iView pico-projector

Remember those fancy microdisplays we heard about back in November? You know, the one's based on Displaytech's Ferroelectric liquid-crystal-on-silicon (FLCOS) technology? Now that you're with us, we figured you should know that these very devices will be used in a pico-projector crafted by iView Limited. Apparently, said PJ will be demonstrated next week at CES, but beyond the fact that both firms seem extraordinarily happy to have found each other, little is known about the resulting device itself. Still, we're hoping to get a few useful details -- resolution, form factor, etc. -- in just a few days, but for now, you can tag the read link and catch all the gushing you can handle.[Via AboutProjectors]

  • iView bumped to 3.1.3

The "Batman's utility belt" of image catalog tools, iView Media Pro, has been patched to version 3.1.3 -- mostly bug fixes for the app that fills a cross-platform niche underneath heavy DAM hitters like Cumulus. This might very well be the last update to iView's flagship product (one of my longtime favorites) before it gets rebranded as Expression Media by the big MS, so grab it while it's hot.

  • Sakar offers up iView PVP for iPod video

We'll admit, we definitely admired Belkin's prototype version a lot better, but Sakar is doing something with its iPod-engulfing PVP that Belkin currently isn't -- bringing it to market. The iView player mimics a portable DVD player in just about every major aspect, including the seven-inch widescreen display, built-in stereo speakers, thin frame, AV output, and rechargeable battery, but instead of letting users load up their favorite disc, it sports a sunk-in socket for one's iPod video along with a dock connector to seat your Apple and keep it well hidden while in use. While we're not positive about when Sakar plans on rolling this thing out, nor if it'll come in a white color scheme to compliment the black, it'll run you $150 when it finally lands.[Via pdaBlast]

  • Microsoft buys iView Multimedia

iView Multimedia, the makers of iViewMediaPro, has been purchased by the good folks in Redmond: Microsoft (cue dramatic music).Yan Calotychos, founder of iView Multimedia (and one would imagine owner of a big check from Microsoft) says that iView was born on the Mac and will stay on the Mac. I seem to recall Bungie saying something similar about Halo when they were bought out (though it did eventually come out for the Mac, so there is hope!).
