  • The case that turns your iPhone into an iDroid

Leave it to a game designer to dream up the bulkiest, most awkward iPhone case ever: This is the iDroid. Made to mimic the look of an in-game communicator in the game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the case has a bunch of goofy features. For starters, it has a lid over the camera lens, which opens to reveal the camera itself and a "MAINTENANCE ALERT" warning label. There's a bright blue LED in a blue sphere situated in the center of the case which can be rotated, and the massive, faux antenna can be detached from the case itself and used as a stylus pen for the iPhone screen. The case pairs up with a free Ground Zeroes app that will be released alongside the case later this year. The initial launch will be in October, though that's only for Japan. There's no official word on a stateside release, so you may have to import your own if you can't live without it. The price has been set at around US$70.

Yes, folks, this is real life. In an interview with Wired, at the Apps World North America conference, Steve Wozniak revealed his belief that Apple should create a phone using Google's Android operating system. According to him, "There's nothing that would keep Apple out of the Android market as a secondary phone market ... We could play in two arenas at the same time." As Wired's Mat Honan notes, the idea of such a handset wouldn't be technically impossible, but anyone who's familiar with the Apple of today knows that the chances of this actually happening are slim to none. "We [Apple] could compete very well. People like the precious looks of stylings and manufacturing that we do in our product compared to the other Android offerings," Wozniak stated during the interview. Of course, this isn't the first time (and very likely won't be the last) in which the great, legendary Woz has spoken openly about his thoughts on Apple- and Android-related affairs -- still, it's always interesting to hear his perspective on the tech industry. Wozniak also spoke to Wired about the film Her, Moore's Law and even why he thinks the Cupertino company has yet to release a smartwatch or TV. You can check out the full interview right here.

Android getting ported to the iPhone may be old news by now, but Android 2.3 (a.k.a. Gingerbread) getting ported to the iPhone? Well, that's something... new, if entirely expected. As before, it's the iPhone 3G doing the honors, and the port is still based on the iDroid project, which means you can hang onto iOS in a dual-boot configuration so you won't be left in the cold when the less-than-stable port decides not to cooperate. And, yes, this once again means that the iPhone has gotten the latest version of Android before many Android devices have. Head on past the break for a video.

Had enough Android excitement yet? Of course not. Following up on the Froyo release yesterday, we've got the no less vital news that the iPhone 3G port of Android is now ready to download and install. Having shown off Google's OS running on a 3G two weeks ago, author David Wang has clearly had to iron out a few kinks before serving up the necessary binaries, but here they are now, replete with a handy install guide he's penned over at PC World. Time to get yourself on the dual-booting bandwagon, no?
