Mvix has a history of pumping out reliable, multi-faceted media streamers, but it has evidently decided to branch out a touch with its latest piece. Taking a note from the HD PVR from Hauppauge, the box packs component video inputs that will likely capture high-def video from set-top-boxes and the like. It's also an HDD-based media player (bring your own hard drive, of course), which outputs content up to 1080p via HDMI. You'll also find integrated WiFi, a USB port for streaming files on external drives and UPnP / BitTorrent functionality. Mvix hasn't stated when this puppy will go on sale nor how expensive it will be, but those looking for a multi-purpose media streamer / recorder should probably keep a check on this one.

We can't say we're really feeling that design, but Evergreen's DN-MRC200T makes up for it with a good bit of functionality. This device not only features an area for a 2.5-inch hard drive of your choice along with Memory Stick Pro / SD / MMC flash card access, but it also includes a built-in TV tuner (analog, regrettably) to handle the capture, storage and transport of programming without any outside assistance. Granted, it seems a bit late to be bringing a product out without a digital tuner built-in, but hey, maybe that's why it's "only" ¥19,999 ($176).[Via AkihabaraNews]

It may not boast the most original design or feature set, but Prolink's just-announced "PixelView PlayTV Media Box" looks like it should nonetheless handle your basic media recording needs just fine. Somewhat interestingly, this one doesn't pack any storage of its own, relying instead on SD cards or an external USB hard drive (both of which are hot swappable), which should help to keep the cost down quite a bit (no price has been announced). Otherwise, you'll get some basic PVR functionality, along with multi-channel preview of up to nine channels, a one-button recording feature, and recording profiles for a range of devices including iPod and PSP. Still no word on a release date, but we wouldn't expect it to be too far off.[Thanks, Eric]

  • Onkyo announces Wavio VR-1000J media recorder

It looks like Neuros is soon going to have to work a little harder to win over media-happy PSP users, with Onkyo announcing that it's about to bust out a standalone media recorder of its own. Like the Neuros recorder, Onkyo's Wavio VR-1000J doesn't have any internal storage, relying instead on Memory Sticks and SD Cards that you can pop directly into your PSP or other video-capable device. In addition to PSP compatible video, it'll also record in the 3GPP, 3GPP2, and ASF video formats, with three video quality settings for each to suit your needs (maxing out at 320x240, 30 fps, apparently not supporting the PSP's native widescreen resolution). On the audio front, you'll only get AAC, G.726, and AMR formats, making it bit less versatile than the Neuros all around, although it does have the whole pyramid thing going for it. Look for this one to hit Japan Decemeber 25th, coming in around the 20,000 Yen mark ($170US).[Via Akihabara News]
