Nokia breathes new life into Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 devices
It may not always act like it, but Nokia still cares about your old Symbian phones. The handset giant announced last week that it's rolling out updates for some older Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 devices, including the E72, E52, E5, C5-00, 6700, C6-00, C5-03, 5230, 5235, 5250,X6, N97 mini, 5800 XpressMusic, and 5530 XpressMusic. At the top of the list of updates is the v7.3 browser, the version found in Symbian Anna. Ovi Maps is getting an upgrade on the devices as well, with Ovi Maps 3 SR4 coming to the 3.2 devices and Ovi Maps 3 SR6 hitting Symbian 5.0. Also on the list: new emoticons for MMS, surely enough to bring a vaguely enthusiastic smiley face to even the most callous of Nokia owners. The C6-00 and 5230 were the first phones to get the updates, with more to follow in the coming weeks.
Nokia E72 gets white paint option, firmware update
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more direct competitor to the BlackBerry businessphone hegemony than Nokia's E7x series. It's therefore quite logical that only a day after RIM chief Mike Lazaridis made the white Bold official, Nokia is following up with its own pale-hued E72. Coming with a skinned UI to match the externals, the new handset is being announced alongside a firmware update (for E72s of all colors and creeds) that updates Ovi Maps, improves social networking integration, and allows location sharing through Facebook. You know, for when you wanna let your hair down after a hard day at the office. Internet radio of an unspecified variety has been included as well, along with general performance and stability improvements. Both the white handset and new firmware are available through Nokia today.
Nokia ships E72 and 5800 Navigation Edition to the US of A
We know it's the N900 you're jonesing for, but if you're looking to let those "other guys" put Maemo 5 through the ringer while you continue to use an OS that's been around the block, Nokia's got two more for you to choose from starting today. Both the QWERTY-packin' E72 ($407) and eager-to-route 5800 Navigation Edition have started to ship to America (according to the company, anyway), with the former listed as "coming soon" on Nokia's webstore and as "in stock on December 10th" over at Amazon. The latter is available to order now for $299 sans contract, so good luck holding off for Google Maps Navigation to make this thing look dated. Update: Seems this is the second time Nokia has stated that its E72 was available in the US, so we'd probably wait for at least another notification or two before pulling the trigger. Nokia E72 exhaustively reviewed ahead of launch
Say you've got a Nokia E71. Say, further, that you fully intend to upgrade to the E72 the moment it's available (we can't say we blame you). If you'd like to know more about the phone by the time it arrives on your doorstep than most people do in the lifetimes of their devices, we might recommend grabbing pork sandwich, a 64-ounce Coke, and your favorite blankie and curling up with mobile-review's epic "first look." Spec-wise, the new model is an outright slam dunk over the one it replaces, and it seems that mobile-review generally agrees -- sticking points were few and far between though he seems ambivalent on the optical d-pad, and it's also worth noting that the keyboard is now based on the E63's design rather than the E71's. Even if you don't want to read through the somewhat roughly-translated text, it's hard to argue with mobile-review's great photography -- and it's not like you're seeing an E72 in the flesh today, so you may as well have a look, eh? Nokia E72 prototype gets manhandled, torn asunder
If you stop to think, really, about how much we take pleasure in seeing pictures of phones get utterly dismembered, it's quite disturbing.
