Targus to release new WiFi PAN-equipped Laser Mouse this September, flips Bluetooth the bird
Back in 2008, Ozmo Devices paired up with Intel to get its WiFi PAN (WiFi Personal Area Network) tech into low-power devices. Fast-forward to a few years later, tack on a new partnership with Targus and get ready for the first of those Bluetooth-less peripherals to hit the market. The company's new accessory teammate is planning to rollout a line of WiFi Laser mice that incorporate the OZMO2000 chip, with the first mouse to hit sometime this September. The unreleased AMW58US model will connect directly to your computer's WiFi receiver and packs a four-way scroll wheel, laser sensor and compatibility for Windows 7 -- batteries included. Ozmo's WiFi PAN available Q4, is this the end of Bluetooth's reign of terror?
Has it really been two years since Intel joined forces with Ozmo Devices? Indeed it has, and we've been eagerly awaiting the day when our mouse, keyboard, and other peripherals would communicate via WiFi. And you know what? We're still waiting -- though we might not be for much longer. Apparently the company has just announced the availability of its low power OZMO2000 chip "to select peripheral manufacturers." Compatible with Windows 7 SoftAP, Intel MyWi-Fi, and presumably Wi-Fi Direct, you can look for it to ship in production volumes in Q4. We know that this is great news for anyone who is frightened and confused by the tyranny of Bluetooth, to say the least. PR after the break.
Ozmo's WiFi PAN mouse cuts the wires and the Bluetooth
We've never really had anything bad to say about our Bluetooth mouse experience (this week, at least), but Ozmo thinks it can do better. The company has built an optical mouse that connects over low-power WiFI Personal Area Network (PAN) technology. Ozmo has special drivers for the PC to allow it to do concurrent WLAN and WPAN connections, and is compatible with 802.11g and 802.11a. They're also fighting Bluetooth on the audio front with a headset, where we think they might find a more welcome reception -- especially when they get some good stereo headphones on the market. Intel and Ozmo just recently trotted out this WiFI PAN tech a couple of months ago, and what we have here are reference designs for use by OEMs, so no word on commercial availability just yet.[Via I4U]

Look out, Bluetooth -- Ozmo Devices has its eyes set squarely on you. Okay, so maybe this whole thing isn't as adversarial as advertised, but there's no denying that the aforesaid company's latest initiative will target the exact same devices that BT is embedded within now. Ozmo has announced a partnership with Intel at Computex that will extend the latter company's Cliffside WiFi Personal Area Network (PAN) technology to "low-power devices." Essentially, WiFi radios that suck less juice nowadays would take on dual roles -- accessing WLAN networks and doing the duties typically reserved for Bluetooth -- which would enable devices to have one less component stuffed within bulking things up.
