  • Samsung's 16-inch R610 laptop reviewed: more mediocre than memorizing

Among Samsung's first line of self-branded laptops in America, you'll find the 16-inch R610. Designed to be amongst the thinnest, lightest and least expensive 16-inchers on the market, the unit succeeded at its core missions. Sadly, it didn't fare so well when it came time to get to business. In terms of sheer performance, critics found it to be "acceptable" overall, but the graphics scores and HDD test results left a lot to be desired. Also, the bundled six-cell battery only lasted 2.5 hours before needing a recharge, though you could fork out a bit extra to get nearly six hours with the 9-cell pack. At the end of the day, reviewers just couldn't recommend this over, say, Acer's feature-packed 6930G, though those on a budget may be willing to overlook the shortcomings to have the footprint they're really after.

We've been fans of Samsung laptops ever since we laid hands (and personal cash) on the ultra-portable Q30 resold by Dell as the X1. As such, Sammy has our full attention after announcing proper plans to enter the US market with five different Samsung-branded laptop models. Slated for sale at US big box and the usual brick-and-mortarless on-line shops are the 10-inch NC10, the 13.3-inch Q310 and X360, 14-inch X460 and P460, 15.4-inch P560, and 16-inch R610 slab with 16:9 aspect -- a silicon feast spread across thin and light, all purpose, business, desktop replacement, and netbook tastes. We're talking premium rigs here folks, a bold move with very questionable timing given the sudden shortage of discretionary capital held by the average Dusty McSixpack. Contain yourselves, folks, this is a civilized society! Please, just remain calm and calmly file into the MetroPCS or US Cellular store to pick up one of these two gems, the r300 flip and the r610 slider from Samsung. Neither one is likely to turn any heads, but the prices are right; the $129 (on contract, naturally) r620 does EV-DO with a 1.3 megapixel cam plus A2DP and microSD expansion, while the lower-end 1xRTT r300 gets flashy with a red exterior but keeps a tight lid on the cash outlay with a $109 asking price. Get 'em both now.[Via Phone Scoop]Read - Samsung r300 for MetroPCSRead - Samsung r610 for US Cellular
