Yahoo and AOL are part of Verizon's new 'Oath' brand (updated)

Somewhere along the way, Verizon's planned purchase of Yahoo got real complicated. Thanks to security breachs of gargantuan proportions, Yahoo has lost a ton of value -- and the company was struggling even when Verizon announced its intentions to buy the former internet juggernaut. Part of the value lost is in the Yahoo brand, which Verizon apparently considers toxic at this point. To that end, Verizon is changing the name of the combined Yahoo and AOL company. Business Insider first reported that "Oath" will be the new name of the company (which would be the parent company of Engadget). Minutes after we published this story, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong confirmed the change in a tweet.

  • Final Fantasy XIV introduces character rename service

You've been enjoying your time playing Final Fantasy XIV, which is good. You hadn't expected to, but you have, and that's even better. But it does make your hastily considered name of "Ffxiv Blows" a bit less than appropriate. Or perhaps you've just grown tired of your in-game avatar's appellation, whether it's a setting-appropriate name like M'lana Nyokha or a less-setting-appropriate name like Mycat Isanimrod. You don't have to suffer a poor name any longer, though, as the rename feature has arrived. Character renames can now be purchased through the game's account management page per character, allowing you to type in a new character name when you're logging in much like the appearance-changing aspects of Fantasia. The cost for a single rename is $10, and they are purchased per character rather than account-wide. So if you've long been looking to alter your character's less-than-dignified sobriquet, you can do that now.

The European gaming publisher ProSiebenSat.1 just got bigger. Pending approval by the responsible cartel authorities, PSS1 has acquired online and mobile games publisher Aeria Games Europe. The deal doubles the publisher's portfolio (upping it from 19 to 39 games) and almost triples its games community (rising from 27 to 77 million gamers). ProSiebenSat.1 will combine the games operations in Berlin and take on the name SevenGames. Dr. Christian Wegner, a member of PSS1's Executive Board, explained, "The acquisition of Aeria Games Europe allows us full access to new markets and target groups, making us one of the top three publishers in Europe in one fell swoop, and takes us a big step forward in mobile gaming, the sector's largest growth driver. The transaction is fully in line with our strategy of strengthening our portfolio of digital assets by making bolt-on acquisitions." [Source: ProSiebenSat.1 press release]

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic frees up the names on unused free-to-play characters

There's nothing wrong with getting a desired character name because you were the first person to create a character with that name on a given server. But it does kind of smart if you're a Star Wars: The Old Republic subscriber with a burning desire to use the name "Xylophone" but can't, especially if that name was just snapped up by a free-to-play character who hasn't even made it off of Tython. It's with that in mind that the game is instituting a series of name releases for free-to-play and preferred status players. If you're a free-to-play or preferred status player, this does mean you're at some risk of losing your name. Characters below level 10 who haven't been played in 60 (free) or 90 (preferred) days will need to be renamed, as will characters below level 30 who haven't been played in 120 (free) or 180 (preferred) days. Characters 30 and above will be exempt across the board, as will all characters of subscribers. So you might be able to get your desired character name back! Or you'll find out that Xylophone is actually a level 31 Juggernaut, which is still kind of neat. [Source: BioWare press release]

  • MU Rebirth begins beta sign-ups

Never get to attached to an upcoming game title in this industry, as it can change at the drop of a hat. Webzen has renamed MU Chronicle R to the somewhat-less-unwieldy MU Rebirth and announced that the title is now accepting sign-ups for its closed beta test. MU Rebirth is a remake of MU Online with a heavy PvP emphasis. The level cap will remain at 400, although Webzen says that it is significantly speeding up the leveling process so that players will hit that number in two hours. Yes, you read that right. This plays into the "rebirth" feature, which allows players to go back to level 1 while retaining gained stats. The closed beta test of MU Rebirth will run from July 3rd to the 10th. Webzen will be hosting a global PvP tournament during the test, although details for this contest are forthcoming. [Source: Webzen press release]

  • Blog Azeroth Shared Topic: What would you rename WoW?

Each week, Blog Azeroth hosts a Shared Topic for bloggers to answer on their own blogs and then link to in the forum. This week, frinka from Warcraft Street asks: Knowing what you know now about the game, what name other than World of Warcraft would you give it? Why? Since WoW is based on the Warcraft races and lore (though not the gameplay), it's hard to imagine it by any other name. But I guess they could have gone with something else, as long as it had Warcraft in the title. Warcraftquest Warcraft Online Age of Warcraft Warcraft Reloaded Warcraft Universe Maybe I'm just used to it, but World of Warcraft has a much better ring to it than any of those.

  • Mountain Lion developer preview changes file renaming options

One of my pet peeves with Mac OS X always appears when I'm in the process of opening a file from an app and want to either make a duplicate of an original or just want to rename the file. With Lion and previous versions of OS X, that meant that I'd have to close the "Open" dialog, open a Finder window, make the name change, and then go back to the dialog. AppleInsider noted today that the Mountain Lion developer preview adds some changes that will eliminate this pesky issue. Mountain Lion now includes "new and improved" Save and Open dialogs (see above) that finally let users rename files from the dialog -- no trip to the Finder required. With a double-click on the name, it becomes editable in the dialogs, exactly what you see in the Finder now. Files can also be renamed from the title bar of apps. The Versions pulldown currently displays options to lock, duplicate, revert to last saved version, or browse all versions. In Mountain Lion (below), the pulldown is changed so that it now adds Rename, Move to iCloud, and Move To items. While this is just a small change to the operating system, it's something that a lot of us have wanted for a long time.

  • Prime Battle for Dominus plans website relaunch, new title

Prime Battle for Dominus may be a mouthful to say, but after this weekend it will be no more. No, not because of the 2012 apocalypse or that it's entering the witness protection program, but because it's getting a new name. You're silly, stop assuming the worst! In a brief tweet to the game's followers, the devs posted the following: "The guilds page on our site is down until Monday, when we relaunch our website. Not changing the game, just changing the name." Considering that the official forums now say "Welcome to Prime Online!" we have a pretty good guess as to what that new name might be. That's right: World of PrimeCraft. [Thanks Johannes for the tip!]

  • Microsoft showcases new copy, move, rename functions in Windows 8 (video)

Windows 8 has yet to see the light of day, but new details on the forthcoming OS continue to emerge. The most recent preview once again comes courtesy of Microsoft's Building Windows 8 blog, where the company has posted new information on the software's copy, move, rename and delete functions. With the new system, all pending copy operations will appear in one dialog, where users can pause, stop and resume any job, while monitoring data transfer rates on a real-time throughput graph (pictured above). Redmond's developers have also made it easier to resolve file name collisions, with a new dialog that displays thumbnail images of source files directly alongside preexisting documents of the same name. This allows users to decide which files they'd like to copy or replace by simply hovering their mouse over the image to see its file path, or double clicking it to open in full view. For more information, check out the demo video that's waiting for you after the break.

  • Google Search app for iPhone introduces new side-swipe toolbar and other UI tweaks

What you once knew as the Google Mobile App has been rechristened the Google Search app, signifying a renewed focus for Google's primary iOS application. Having formerly served as a multifunctional access point to all of Google's varied web apps, the new software is now geared to serve search needs first, with its other offerings relegated to a secondary "Apps" menu. There's also the addition of a new toolbar, accessible by swiping left to right, and improved fast-app switching support. The ever-present bug fixes and a few more user interface tweaks complete the list of changes. To get your download on, you may exploit either the source link below or the QR code above.

  • And He said unto them: "Rename The Bible Online"

    12.01.2010

While it hasn't made quite the impact one might expect from the subject matter, The Bible Online has been soldiering along since it was first announced earlier this year. Unfortunately, the game's developers have found that the free-to-play browser-based game has a problem one would never think to be a real issue: the name isn't distinctive enough. Specifically, the name doesn't lend itself well to any sort of search engine optimization, and for a browser-based game, that's a pretty serious drawback. As a result, a contest is being held to rename the game with a more catchy (and search-engine-friendly) sobriquet, complete with a special prize being offered to the three best entries. Although the official announcement doesn't mention what the prize will be, it will most likely be some form of special in-game item or title. If you're playing The Bible Online or just interested in the name of the game, it might be worth throwing your hat into the ring.

  • First Look: Renamed Renamer renames files and folders

It's not often that I get to write such a delightfully alliterative title to a post. Philipp Mayerhofer, C.O.O. of Dare to be Creative, sent along a note this morning mentioning that his company's file renaming powerhouse had not only been renamed, but that it has a whole slew of new features. The application formerly known as Renamer4Mac is now simply called Renamer (US$29.00), and there's a new website at renamer.com to showcase the app. What does it do? (Hint: the name should tell you a lot) Well, Renamer is a bulk file renamer. When would you use a bulk file renamer? Here's an example -- often, I bring over a pile of photos from my iPhone 3GS using Image Capture, and I save them to a folder on my desktop. They all have really exciting names like IMG_0771.jpg, IMG_0772.jpg, ad infinitum. Read on for more information about Renamer.

We're still not sure what to make of Sci Fi Channel's decision to rebrand as "Sy Fy" but the time has come, tomorrow night when you tune in to peep the series premiere of Warehouse 13 (trailer embedded after the break) the channel guide should look a bit different. So, after a couple of months to settle in are you still reacting with pitchforks, torches and boycotts or just ignoring the switch altogether?

  • Samsung 'selectively' drops OmniaHD name in some countries

    04.09.2009

Rumors have been flying the past couple days that the OmniaHD is no more -- at least, not in name -- and it turns out that's partially true. We've received official word from Samsung that the S60-based superphone will be "selectively" renamed to "i8910 HD" in some countries "due to business issues." The spokesperson didn't expand on what those business issues were or what countries would get the name change, exactly, but let's be perfectly honest: this is one of those phones that could be called "Rotten Eggs in a Box" for all we care and we'd still line up to buy it at any price. Anyhow, Sammy says it'll still be using the Omnia name going forward for other products -- just not this one.

  • Mac Automation: Rename multiple files efficiently

With Automator, you can easily streamline common tasks. If you work with many files (i.e. pictures), then you know how easy it is to lose track because of incorrectly named files. With this Automator workflow, you'll never lose your place (or a file) again. Building the Workflow To create this workflow, simply add the following Automator actions (in the same order): Get Specified Finder Items Rename Finder Items When you add the "Rename Finder Items" action to your workflow, Automator will ask if you want to copy the files so you don't mess with the originals. Choose "Don't Add." Configuring the Workflow In the "Rename Finder Items" action, you have almost unlimited choices for renaming schemes. To get started, select a scheme from the first drop-down box. You can choose from: Add Date or time, Add Text, Change Case, Make Sequential, Replace Text, Name Single Item. Once you select your renaming scheme, choose the options you want based on the scheme. For instance, if you wanted the "Make Sequential" scheme, you could choose to use existing naming, or create a new name. You can also select options for where to place the numbers, which number to start counting from, and how to separate the number from the rest of the text. Running the Workflow Once you have your naming scheme figured out, it's time to run the workflow, and have Automator do the heavy-lifting. Drag and drop the files you want renamed onto the "Get Specified Finder Items" workflow. They will be added to the list of files to be renamed. You can then click the "Run" button in the top-right corner of the window. Your original files will be renamed, leaving you with perfectly renamed files. You can now save your workflow. • Boston Acoustics renames Vista speakers "VS" to avoid confusion

    by

    10.02.2008

Engadget HD public service announcement -- the Boston Acoustics Vista speakers have nothing to do with any other products (HT-related or not) in the marketplace using the name Vista. For both of the people out there who may have been confused on that point, Boston Acoustics is renaming the entire model line "VS," to signify the speakers as "a new Vision in great Sound." The company is not making even a suggestion that Microsoft applied any pressure, which makes us even more disappointed in the new name -- the "Vista" moniker was a lot easier to remember. We hope another PSA clarifying that these speakers can do more than play a certain Pearl Jam album is not called for.

  • File List 1.2 does file renaming for free

I love it when I find freeware that is not only functional, but practical. File List is no exception. File List is an awesome utility that allows you to quickly and easily change batches of file names quickly. There are many types of ways you can rename the files including: find and replace, number, change case, and more. This is nearly identical to the Automator action "Rename Finder Items." However, for those of you who don't want to sit through creating an Automator workflow, then this might be the application for you! In my opinion, one of the coolest features of this application is being able to create a "droplet." These droplets allow you to simply set up the action you want, create the droplet, then just drag your files and drop them on it to run the action on the files. This very creative piece of software also won a 3.5/5 from MacWorld's Mac Gems review. This software is available for free (donations accepted) from the Many Tricks website.

  • Optimus 103 to be renamed

We all know how many keys the 103 key keyboard has, but it looks like Lebedev's long-awaited Optimus has been undergoing some serious retooling for its CeBIT coming out, and from the sound of it they may have dropped some keys from the board. We won't be sure until later this month when the Optimus takes home a new name and shows off its latest layout, but for $1200 we sure as hell hope they've managed to add some more of those sweet, sweet 2 x 2cm OLED keys -- or subtract some hard currency from the working MSRP. Oh yeah, and in case you hadn't noticed, they've got yet another mouth-watering photo of some yet-untainted shapeshifting keys.[Thanks, Nicholas M]
