Just when you thought you knew exactly where you wanted to party and occasionally study electrical engineering, Seton Hall in New Jersey comes along to offer you something better. That's right people, 'free' gadgets: in addition to those Lumia 900 phones it's already promised, the university has also announced a splurge on Samsung Series 7 Slates for all science and honors degree juniors once Windows 8 arrives in the Fall, while those studying other disciplines will have to make do with a Series 5 Ultrabook. The scheme might sound like bribery or a soma to ward off campus activism, but it's actually part of Seton Hall's 15-year-old SHUmobile program, designed to ensure that "everyone has access to the advanced technology they need to succeed" -- and according to the video after the break, that technology just has to be Microsoft Office. [Thanks, Vincent]

Granted, this'll be just one more way for upperclassmen to quickly identify the newbies, but all incoming freshmen to New Jersey's Seton Hall University will be given a Nokia Lumia 900 upon orientation, as a means to integrate technology with the school's curriculum -- quite similar to previous efforts that we've seen for the iPad and iPhone. Not to stop there, university officials hope to make the smartphone a key component of student life with the SHUmobile app and its Freshman Experience hub. Here, freshmen may interact with each other via social media and direct messaging, find peer academic advisors, learn about their future housing situation and get to know their roommates. As for mobile service, it's said that students will receive pre-paid access to AT&T through the fall semester. After that, it seems that freshman will need to pick up the bill or leverage WiFi networks to remain connected. To learn more of how SHU is thinking very differently, just hop the break for the PR.

Seton Hall University (located in New Jersey) and Blackboard have developed the SHUMobile (free) app for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It's also available for Blackberry, Android, and Nokia devices. SHUMobile provides a student portal to a wide variety of what Seton Hall has to offer. In effect, it's one stop shopping for managing your education. The app is quite well designed and provides eight categories at present, including: A searchable phone directory Athletics, which allows you to drill down to each sport and break them into men's and women's teams, with a scrolling list of stories about each. Also provided are options to search for game schedules and scores. Listings of events of the day, which are broken down into the following categories: Academic, Athletics, Campus Tours, Conferences, Exhibits, Film, Lectures and Readings, Performances, Receptions, Religious, Student Government, and Workshops. A daily listing is provided along with an easy way to move forward or back by a day. Choosing one brings up a screen with specific information on that event. A pinch and stretch campus map that uses GPS to locate your position on campus A scrolling list of videos Seton Hall news (broken into categories) A searchable listing of 250 images of people and campus life The entire course catalog, which drills down to times, dates, instructors, and location
