The intersection of PSP 3000 and Hack St. has thus far been a pretty lonely little place, so we're pleased to announce that the ChickHEN project is definitely gaining some momentum. According to one extra special YouTube video, hacksters are now able to run the TIFF exploit and boot into a homebrew enabler environment on a PSP 2003 and a PSP 3000 running 5.03 firmware. The code is seen surviving a reboot, and both the system software and MAC address can be changed. While not ready for prime time yet, this does pave the way for emulators, PSP uCLinux, and all of those other things that keep all you homebrew fans happy at night. Compal's enlisting two new recruits into the PMP army, the APA00 and APA01. Both uCLinux-powered devices sport 7-inch LCD displays, DMB-TH, FM Tuner, 802.11g, up to 80GB HDD, an SD/MMC slot, and component / composite outputs. Codec support includes MPEG, Xvid, WMV9, H.264 and a variety of audio formats. The company's boasting HD support up to 1080i, but with a WVGA resolution, you're not gonna be enjoying that crisp of an image without an external screen. Aesthetics aside, the only difference we could find is an extra six grams of heft in the black-clad APA00. Not a peep on pricing or availability.[Via Pocketables]Read - APA00Read - APA01

  • Unusable but cool: uClinux on PSP

The PLAYSTATION 3 can relatively easily run Linux ... so why not its smaller brother, the PSP? Xiptech seems to have made a "functional" version of uClinux run on the PSP. This early operating system can't do much: in fact, the only hardware support it has right now is for the headphones. But, over time, the development community will undoubtedly add more to this exciting project. Who knows? Maybe this "proof in concept" will evolve into something far more fruitful down the line.[Via PSP Hacks]
