Terra Soft offering up 80GB PS3s with Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 pre-installed

Early last year, we polled the grand audience and found out just what you liked (and disliked) about Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 for PS3. Fast forward 13 months, and those still waiting on the sidelines have yet another option for jumping in. As of now, Terra Soft Solutions is offering up Sony's 80GB PlayStation 3 with YDL 6.0 pre-installed for $549.95, and yes, that includes the DVDs containing the OS. Interestingly, it seems as if you'll still have to pony up for a component or HDMI cable, but at least the option's there, right?

Mercury Computer Systems looses MultiCore Plus SDK for PS3

Those looking to squeeze a bit more utility out of their PS3 need look no further than Mercury Computer Systems, which has just released its MultiCore Plus SDK for Sony's latest console. The kit aims to enable application developers to harness the power of the Cell (relatively) inexpensively, and the firm is marketing the product to research labs, universities, and other businesses that delve into electronic data automation, video compression, and biotechnology. Apparently, the software was designed to work hand-in-hand with Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux operating system, and it can be snapped up now for slightly less than a PS3 itself (in other words, $399 per seat).

Linux-equipped PS3 to be used in DARPA Urban Challenge

While we're sure a number of you have a Yellow Dog Linux-equipped PS3 around for leisure's sake, Axion Racing is using a similar setup to "manage one of seven autonomous vehicle cameras." The San Diego-based team is reportedly eager to show onlookers "things [other than gaming and Blu-ray playing] that can be done using a PlayStation console," and expects the device to mesh well with its array of Dell computers, SICK laser finders, Bumblebee stereo cameras, and FLIR infrared cameras." Of course, who knows what could happen if a stray android climbs on board and fires up a round of MotorStorm while it's trying to concentrate.

Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 to run on Sony's PlayStation 3

Sony's Kutaragi gave the rumor mill plenty of fodder by speculating that multiple operating systems were being mulled over for use in the PlayStation 3, and eventually Sony posted an article confirming its interest in both OS X and Linux options. Now it appears that we just might have a winner. Terra Soft's website proudly displays that the forthcoming version of Yellow Dog Linux "supports the PlayStation 3 console," and leaves hints that we might see a few sweet video demonstrations in the near future. While intricate details about the the OS's compatibility with the sure-to-be-scarce console are still few and far between, we're expecting it to drop "in mid-November" to presumably coincide with the November PS3 launch dates -- but at least pulling strings to get your name on a less-than-assuring pre-order list probably won't be necessary here.
