Watch Nintendo's E3 presentation in under 9 minutes
As is tradition, Nintendo didn't take the stage at E3 and opted instead to show a pre-recorded Direct video, which showed plenty of teased and some never-before-seen Switch games. The presentation kicked off with a peek at the mech game Daemon X Machina, followed by looks at Super Mario Party, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fortnite (which launches on the console today), Overcooked 2, Hollow Knight, Octopath Traveler and plenty more. The second half was entirely given over to an in-depth look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will have every character that previously appeared in the franchise (and more! Today's reveals: Inkling and Ridley). Phew! But don't worry about information overload -- just watch our video to see the best of what Nintendo showed off today in less than nine minutes.
'Fortnite' for Switch doesn't support PlayStation-linked accounts
If you're like many gamers, you rushed to download Fortnite for Switch as soon as it came out -- finally, console-quality battle royale on the road! You may be in for a crushing disappointment if you play on PS4, though. Players have discovered that the Switch version of Fortnite dosn't let you sign in with an Epic Games account linked to PSN, while Switch-first players can't sign in to the PS4 version. Sony's ban on cross-console play appears to be the likely reason, but it's particularly irksome here as this doesn't involve gameplay -- Sony won't even let you carry progress over to a competing product.
'Dragon Ball FighterZ' is coming to the Switch this year
Dragon Ball FighterZ came out for PC, PS4 and Xbox One in January and quickly won over fans with its tight fighting gameplay and visuals that closely resemble the anime. At long last, Bandai Namco announced that the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2018.
Hey Nintendo, where's 'Metroid Prime 4'?
If you've been patiently waiting since last year's E3 conference for the reveal of the new Metroid Prime 4 game, we're sorry. The hotly anticipated next iteration of Samus Aran was nowhere to be seen during Nintendo Direct, the venerable gaming company's main announcement video that broadcast live this morning.
'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' will support GameCube controllers
The full reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Switch capped off Nintendo's pre-recorded Direct presentation for E3. The first teaser for the game dropped back in March, a year after the new console released. While fans have been pumped for the next game in the venerable franchise, so has the pro community -- and their prayers have been answered, as the game will support the much-preferred GameCube controller.
'Daemon X Machina' brings stylized mechs to Switch in 2019
The Switch has a new mecha property coming next year, announced at the top of today's Nintendo Direct -- Daemon X Machina. While easily mistaken for a new installment in the Xenoblade series, this is decidedly in the shooter genre like Armored Core, with humanoid mechs duking it out in open fields and city streets against even larger spider-like robots.
'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' lands December 7th 2018
Nintendo's E3 showcase focused heavily on the return of one of its hit series: Super Smash Bros Ultimate has landed. The main takeaway is that all fighters that have ever appeared in the series are now back. That includes the return of outsiders like Solid Snake (ten years since he last appeared in Smash Bros.) and, well, over 60 characters total. Just think of the (completely compatible) Amiibo collection. Nintendo took a deep dive on the roster, outlining how each character has gradually evolved for Ultimate.
'Super Mario Party' is ready to ruin your friendships October 5th
Nintendo is reviving Mario Party. Super Mario Party will be released this October 5th and from the looks of it, the game will make use of special Switch features we haven't seen before. One section of the video showed two Switch screens laying face up on a table. From a top-down perspective, the screens resembled a board game, with players entering one familiar green warp pipe on one screen, and popping up on the other screen via said warp pipe. Apparently you can align the screens differently to create different paths.
'Hollow Knight' hits the Nintendo Switch today
After a lengthy wait, the indie platformer Hollow Knight will arrive on the Switch today, Nintendo announced during its E3 Direct stream. It joins Axiom Verge and SteamWorld Dig 2 as one of the handful of independent 2D Metroidvania titles on the console, and we expect to see plenty more down the line, like the upcoming Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Nintendo also confirmed that Hollow Knight is coming with with all of its DLC, so you've got plenty of hacking and slashing to look forward to. The game was a hit on the PC, Mac and Linux, but this Switch release marks Hollow Knight's first time on consoles.
'Overcooked 2' brings more culinary chaos to Nintendo Switch August 7th (updated)
If you're looking for a healthy serving of culinary fun on Nintendo Switch, you'll soon have your chance. During today's Nintendo Direct for E3, the company announced that Ghost Town Games' Overcooked 2 will arrive on the console August 7th. When it drops, expect another crazy cook-off where you can enter the kitchen using wireless, local or online co-op. There are more kitchens, more chefs, more recipes and more madness. You can also employ new techniques like the ability to throw ingredients and kitchens that change on the fly. For now, take a look at the game in the trailer down below.
The next 'Xenoblade Chronicles 2' DLC arrives September 2018
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has already seen a number of DLC updates, but that isn't stopping developer Monolith Soft from adding even more adventures to the game. During Nintendo's E3 2018 press conference on Tuesday, the company revealed that yet another DLC pack -- Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna The Golden Country -- will be arriving to season pass subscribers later this summer.
'Fortnite' comes to Nintendo Switch today
The rumors were true: Fortnite has arrived on the Nintendo Switch. As of 1PM Eastern, you can play Epic Games' battle royale shooter at home or on the move using the same console. It looks to be up to date, too, including newer Season 4 features like shopping carts. If you've been dying to play Fortnite away from home but want more than touchscreen controls, you just got your fix.
'Fire Emblem Three Houses' brings the strategy RPG to Switch
Fire Emblem's long-awaited arrival on Nintendo Switch is edging closer. During its E3 press conference, the house of Mario finally unveiled Three Houses, a game built from the ground up for its portable-console hybrid. As you might expect, the experience is a graphical upgrade over Fire Emblem Awakening, Fates (Birthright and Conquest) and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, which all came out on the Nintendo 3DS. A brief trailer showed a top-down overview for moving troops, followed by some cinematic close-ups for deadly attacks and special abilities. There was also a bevy of anime cut scenes hinting at the larger story that will weave each mission together. The game has been delayed, though, from later this year to spring 2019.
If you buy Nintendo's Poké Ball Plus accessory, you'll get a free Mew
We already knew that the Switch's Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go Evee! would land alongside the Poké Ball Plus, but Nintendo is now trying to sweeten the deal. Each optional accessory will land with the mythical Pokémon Mew inside. Overpowered from the start? Well, that would depend on the stats, but a psychic Pokémon from the outset sounds great. The game (and peripheral) both land on November 16th. Follow all the latest news from E3 2018 here!
Hands-on with 'Starlink: Battle for Atlas' and its Star Fox ship
I never once understood the draw of those Amiibo collectible figurines, either in game or out and, honestly, I figured that Starlink: Battle for Atlas would be an even bulkier, nerdier version of that sort of gameplay. I'm really happy that I called that wrong, this game is great.
Listing hints that Netflix and YouTube are coming to Nintendo Switch
Nintendo's Switch may not be the nexus of the living room like the PS4 and Xbox One, but its hybrid-mode mobility makes it an entertainment powerhouse -- so the absence of streaming service apps over a year after the system's launch has been strange. But mention of Netflix, Hulu and YouTube have apparently surfaced on listings for the Switch on Best Buy's website.
Donkey Kong DLC for ‘Mario + Rabbids’ arrives June 26th
Truly, we are living in the Golden Age of crossover content. At its E3 press conference on Monday, Ubisoft revealed more details about its upcoming Donkey Kong expansion for "Mario + Rabbids" which is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch later this month, June 26th specifically. The DLC is expected to include four new levels totaling an added 10 hours of gameplay.
'Fallout Shelter' is coming to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch
In addition to blowing the crowd's collective mind with its "Fallout 76" news, Bethesda also had some news for the franchise's more casual fans. The company announced that Fallout Shelter is now available on both the Playstation 4 and the Nintendo Switch, for free. So get building Vault Dwellers! Follow all the latest news from E3 2018 here!
How the PlayStation Vita compares to legendary handhelds
The PlayStation Vita is hanging on by a thread. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said in 2015 there was no hope for a follow-up to the handheld console, and since then, the Vita machine has been quietly winding down. Sony is halting production of physical Vita games across Europe and North America on March 31st, 2019, though Sony Japan will continue to churn out carts in the domestic market -- for now.
Anker built two Nintendo Switch-optimized battery packs
Playing the Nintendo Switch in portable mode is incredibly convenient, but the short battery life can leave users wanting. Today, Anker announced two new battery packs that are optimized for fast charging the Nintendo Switch. One is a $70, 13400mAh pack that provides up to 10 hours of additional play time. The other allows for 15 additional hours of play time with a 20100mAh battery, retailing for $90. Both devices look quite sleek, like all of Anker's products, and are branded with the Nintendo Switch logo.
