Data-mining and analytics firm Palantir, co-founded by Gawker-bankrupting tech billionaire Peter Thiel, remains a secretive purveyor of intelligence-gathering tools. While a May report revealed the company's struggles retaining blue chip commercial clients, it still retains contracts with some government agencies. Recently-released documents uncover that the company has quietly provided assistance to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) by contributing to an info analysis system that draws information from multiple law enforcement databases. This existing relationship could assist Trump in his stated plans to ramp up the US' immigration vetting process.

Activision has announced a few weeks' worth of Guitar Hero 5 DLC today. Following tomorrow's release of The Rolling Stones tracks, selections from Street Sweeper Social Club, AFI, Editors, The Faint, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be available in weekly updates. The full release list is available after the break. Activision announced the first month of DLC along with something called the "Guitar Hero Music Library," which, we believe, is a fancy marketing-style way of describing the collection of music you'll be able to build out of DLC, imported tracks, and on-disc content in Guitar Hero 5.

GameStop has revealed box art for the upcoming PSP-exclusive Rock Band Unplugged. The Frequency-in-disguise game will feature "over 40 original master recordings" in a World Tour mode that spans over 24 cities and venues. The box confirms support for DLC through an in-game music store and also reveals there will be no multiplayer options, Infrastructure or Ad-Hoc. Many of the songs listed on the box can be found in the console versions of Rock Band, but there are a few notable new tracks. Will these tracks be exclusive to the PSP version, or is this a hint at future Rock Band content?

  • Leaf rolls out wide frame AFi 10 camera system

It looks like those that found Phase One's 60-megapixel P65+ camera a bit too much for them but Hasselblad's 50-megapixel H3DII-50 somehow lacking may now finally have the answer they've been looking for, as Leaf has just introduced its new 56-megapixel AFi 10 camera system. This one's main selling point is its 56mm true wide frame sensor that Leaf designed with DALSA, which promises to "take you to the edge of the medium-format frame." Apart from that, you can expect a one frame per second capture time, exposure times up to a minute, light sensitivity from ISO 50 to 800 and, of course, some 171MB file sizes to impress your friends with. No word on a price and, quite frankly, we're a little hesitant to ask.[Via 1001 Noisy Cameras]

There's a gritty side to Mexico's booming game industry, shown today as the ESA celebrated the efforts of Mexican law enforcement. 500 officers from the Procuraduría General de la República (PGR) and the Agencia Federal de Investigacion (AFI) teamed up to knock on a few doors down in Mexico City's 'notorious' Tepito district. By the end of the day, four pirate hideouts and three booty stashes were raided, netting roughly 290 DVD/CD burners, 28,800 illegal copies of games and more than 900,000 game cover inserts."Mexico is an important market for ESA members due to the enormous popularity of entertainment software," said Ric Hirsch, senior vice president for Intellectual Property Enforcement at the ESA. "Unfortunately, Mexico also has an alarmingly high rate of game software piracy that by our estimates reaches 88%." Sounds like those federales have a few more doors to knock on.

  • Joystiq on the Video Game Awards yellow carpet

Warning: video is NSFW Joystiq attended Spike TV's 2006 Video Game Awards last week, and here's the video to prove it. We literally had to shove our way into our designated spot at the press line and jockey for position with other outlets like Hustler and The Greater Cuyahoga News-Press. Once we were set, we asked the hard-hitting questions that have been on gamers' minds for some time. Some highlights: Joe Rogan literally going insane on camera talking about virtual reality Mark Ecko talking about Britney Spears' underwear allergy Samuel L. Jackson not popping us in the face One word of warning, the video isn't safe for work by a long shot. Joe Rogan uses some very colorful language near the end that has to be seen to be believed ... then again, maybe not. It is Joe Rogan after all. The 2006 Video Game Awards air tonight on Spike TV. Tune in if you want to see Sam Jackson drop some F-bombs, Stewie Griffin insult Sam, and Sarah Silverman insult every gamer in the world. The best thing about it is the Burning Crusade opening cinematic that premieres during the show. That and the skits about the motion-capture guy. Nothing is funnier than jokes about balls, right? Alternatively, you could also go back and start beating Gears of War on insane. The night is yours!
