Louis Vuitton has upgraded its extravagant take on Wear OS with Qualcomm's new chipset for wearables. The new LV Tambour Horizon smartwatch is now powered by the Snapdragon Wear 3100, the same chip that Qualcomm worked on for years with help from Google. Since one of the new chip's features is better battery life, the upgraded Tambour can now last one full day and up to five additional days if you're just using it to display time.

Earlier this year, an FCC filing suggested Louis Vuitton was working on a luggage tracker that could pair with some of its bags. That device is now available. The Louis Vuitton Echo, as it's called, pairs with the luxury designer's Horizon luggage line and when inserted inside a dedicated elastic band, it can detect when the bag is opened. It's also powered by Sigfox's Monarch service, which lets devices like the Echo transmit data through a range of radio frequencies in airports around the world, meaning the tracker will work internationally.

A smartphone app and recent FCC filing strongly hints that Louis Vuitton has a new tech product on the way: A luggage tracker that pairs with particular bags sold by the fashion company. Sources tell Engadget that it will be the first such device to work internationally, but there has been no official confirmation yet.

eBay is now offering a new service for sellers of high-end handbags. Today the company launched eBay Authenticate, a program that photographs, lists, sells, ships and verifies the authenticity of luxury handbags from 12 major brands. eBay says the goal is to provide would-be buyers with more confidence in the items they're about to throw down a lot of money for.

  • The world of high fashion finally has its answer to Amazon

To give you an idea of the kind of customer LVMH is after, all you need to look at is Louis Vuitton's new $2,900 Android Wear smartwatch. The French company, which owns brands like Dior, Fendi, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs in addition to LV, is the epitome of luxury. And now, with 24 Sèvres, LVMH has what it hopes can become the main online destination for high-fashion shoppers. CEO Eric Goguey says the site is designed to be the web version of Le Bon Marché, an iconic retail space often described as the most selective department store in Paris.

Louis Vuitton's smartwatch is an extravagant take on Android Wear

The idea of the luxury smartwatch is not new -- TAG Heuer, Montblanc and Movado are just a few premium brands to have incorporated Android Wear into their lineup -- but it's still something of a novelty. That hasn't stopped Louis Vuitton to plunge headlong into wearables space, however, as it debuted its first-ever connected watch yesterday. It's called the Tambour Horizon and its price starts at a jaw-dropping $2,490. I managed to get my plebeian hands all over it just a day after the announcement, and while I would never actually buy one, I'll admit that it's quite a stunning piece of wristwear.

The flirtations between technology and high fashion have never been very comfortable, the former's mass-market ethos clashing with the latter's exclusivity. That fact hasn't deterred Louis Vuitton from launching its own premium Android Wear device, the Tambour Horizon, produced with help from Qualcomm and Google.

Luxury fashion brands slowly embrace internet shopping

Luxury fashion brands have been notoriously reluctant to embrace the internet. While you can find their wares on some third-party stores, you typically have to visit an old-fashioned retail store if you want to buy straight from the source. However, that's set to change. LVMH, the owner of many of the world's biggest luxury brands (including Bulgari, Givenchy and Louis Vuitton), is launching its own online store in June.

Why the fashion world won't let Amazon in

There's no doubt Amazon has already mastered the art of selling groceries and other essential goods online. But the company aims to be more than that. It's focusing on streaming technologies, with services like Prime Video and Music Unlimited, a rival to Spotify and Apple Music. Then there's fashion, a space that may be the hardest (though not impossible) to conquer. While Amazon isn't new to selling clothes, the company sees high-fashion retail as its next holy grail. It wants to be the place where you can have a $12 Hanes hoodie and a $1,500 Louis Vuitton frock in the same cart.

  • Louis Vuitton launches iPhone app

We've posted about Louis Vuitton's iPhone and iPad cases before -- they're the ones that are needlessly expensive, and often overly gaudy. But the luxury accessory company has a new initiative around Apple products: it's launching an iPhone app for travelers called Amble. The app makes use of the company's City Guides information to provide guidance to any number of locations of interest in whatever covered city you happen to be in. There's a social element as well, allowing you to share or browse locations sent across through social networks or from friends. And in-app purchases (from $10 to $15) allow for access to the actual City Guides information for cities like Paris or New York. The app itself is free (making it the cheapest thing Louis Vuitton has ever produced), and it's available on the App Store right now. Of course, unless you really need these specific guides for some reason, there are probably other iPhone apps that will do the same thing (I like and use the Yelp app a lot for finding information about places while traveling). But if you can't afford that $1000 iPhone case, you can at least wrap your iPhone in something made by LV.

  • Louis Vuitton cellphone belt buckle is fake, potentially harmful to your manhood

This Louis Vuitton cellphone belt buckle comes to us by way of China and brings together two things that should never be combined: fake designer belts and wireless communication. First off, we've all heard the warnings about a cellphone's proximity to our baby-makers; second, we're pretty sure that taking your belt off every time you get a call will not only lead to frustration, but some pretty weird looks on the subway; and finally, it's a fake. Look, it's not like we're anti-excess here, but it seems to us like a solid gold cellphone is a far more practical investment. This rather ridiculous contraption apparently comes complete with Bluetooth earpiece and built-in camera, and supports dual card standby and TF card expansion. You know how we feel about it, but if you must, there's a video after the jump.

Bland, black and white QR codes got you down? Well leave it to artist Takashi Murakami to shake things up. Creative agency SET has laced the psychedelic-anime expert's playful, colorful imagery into versions of the machine-readable code for Louis Vuitton that -- amazingly -- still work. The company has also done similar work for Coca-Cola, though nothing quite as luxuriously squeezable as this multi-colored panda. Now, if someone could just dress up those drab bar codes... • Keepin' it real fake, part CXCI: Motorola Aura gets the fake Louis Vuitton treatment

Sure, you could just get a plain old KIRF Motorola Aura, but those looking for a double dose of fake luxury will no doubt want to give some serious consideration to this latest knock-off wonder, which adds some of that always popular Louis Vuitton excess to Moto's often imitated sense of style. Of course, that imitation doesn't exactly extend all that far, with this so-called Imobile Phone V453 ditching the Aura's pricey circular display in favor of a not at all pricey square-within-a-circle display, although the phone does one-up the Aura with a eye-catching ring of LED lights around the display (hit up the link below for a glimpse of that). Or, if the Aura's not your thing, you can also save a few bucks and snag a fake Louis Vuitton RAZR... or not.[Via Engadget German]

  • KDDI au, Louis Vuitton team up for designer standby screens

What says "happy holidays" better than a media pack for your loved one's phone? Japan's KDDI au has hooked up with Louis Vuitton to offer a handful of custom home screens that show off the design house's all-too-familiar trademark, which is a great way to make sure your eyes are never too far from the famous "LV" should they stray from your bag, your shoes, your coat, or your car's custom upholstery. Even better, you can get in on the action just by snapping a QR code -- if you're on KDDI, that is. If you're not, scanning that code is going to lead you straight into the depths of designer withdrawal.[Via kanYe West]

  • Louis Vuitton releases first luxury iPhone cases

This wasn't on the iPhone Bingo card, but it should have been. Where there's an extremely coveted gadget, there'll be an extremely expensive luxury case for it. Louis Vuitton has announced a set of four cases for the iPhone: Monogram Canvas, Taiga Leather, Epi Leather and Alligator Skin. The Taiga Leather one has a belt attachment on it, but all of the cases are pretty inconvenient, because you've got to pull the iPhone all the way out to actually use it.Oh, and we've saved the best for last. Want to guess prices? The Monogram Canvas case will only set you back a measly $225, while the Alligator Skin case is twice the price of the actual iPhone: $1120. All the cases will be available tomorrow at Louis Vuitton's Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan. Thanks, JW!
