Mobvoi's second generation TicWatch Pro is available today, and the company hopes it will free you from your phone. The Wear OS-powered TicWatch Pro 4G/LTE offers wireless connectivity, so you can receive voice calls and app notifications, send and receive texts and use popular messaging apps. You can also hit an SOS button that will dial 911, and it will automatically sync your data with the cloud -- all without tethering you to another device.

Google is taking steps to address one of the most commonly-cited smartwatch complaints: battery life. In a bid to increase the time between charges (which at this juncture is usually two days max), Google Fit's latest update will come with a battery-saving low power GPS mode.

Mobvoi, a Google-backed AI company, is fleshing out the features of its new line of smartwatches set to arrive today. The TicWatch S2 and E2, announced earlier this month at CES 2019, have the active lifestyle in mind with a new suite of fitness tracking features called TicMotion. Mobvoi also announced the E2 model will retail for $159.99 while the S2 will go for $179.99.

Mobvoi is upgrading its TicWatch smartwatches for 2019, with a focus on battery life, durability and style. The TicWatch S2 and E2, second-generation versions of the S and E, come packing a 415mAh battery, 30 percent bigger than the original. Similarly, the devices are now waterproof to 5 ATM, compared to the IP67 rating found on the two predecessors. That means, rather than coping just a meter of water, both timepieces will survive in depths of up to 40 meters.

For years, smartwatch makers have struggled to make batteries that last longer than two days -- whether it's by adding ultra low power modes or using your body heat. AI company Mobvoi's approach is to develop a new type of display that sips energy, so that it can last up to 30 days. The technology debuts in the Ticwatch Pro, which is now available on Amazon's Exclusives program, and only for Prime members through August 15th. For $250, the Ticwatch Pro offers an impressive array of features, including the battery-maximizing screen.

$99 buys you a useful, but plain, Android Wear watch

When you think about all the Android Wear watches on the market, you probably recall LG, Huawei, Michael Kors or Tag Heuer. Google typically partners with heavyweights in tech and fashion. So it's intriguing to see a small, obscure startup like Mobvoi offer its own Android Wear watch. What's most interesting, though, is the Ticwatch E's price tag: just $99.

VW teams with Mobvoi to make in-car AI less terrible

As a general rule, in-car voice assistants are... lackluster. Unless you rely on a smartphone tie-in like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you're left with stiff voice commands and limited features. Volkswagen wants to do better. It's forming a joint venture with Mobvoi (yes, the smartwatch maker) that will push toward greater use of AI in cars. The two are planning to develop and sell technology that makes use of Mobvoi's voice recognition and search tech to streamline your driving experience. This includes products that are already on the market -- it's as much about reaching a wider audience as it is VW's long-term future.

You probably haven't heard of Mobvoi, the Chinese company that helped Google circumvent some blocked services to bring Android Wear to China. But now might be a good time to get to know the company. Mobvoi debuted its Ticwatch 2 smartwatch on Kickstarter today, bringing its popular smartwatch, which was previously only available in China, to the world. I got a chance to use a preproduction Ticwatch 2 for a week and so far, I'm intrigued.

  • Android Wear is coming to China with Motorola's help

Android Wear smartwatches have been available in many places for a while, but not China -- the platform's dependencies on Google Play and Google Now weren't going to fly when Google refuses to offer some services in the censorship-heavy country. Motorola isn't deterred, however. It's releasing a version of the new Moto 360 in China with local services in place of their Google equivalents. Mobvoi will handle both search and voice recognition, third-party stores will offer apps and Sogou will handle navigation. It definitely won't represent the familiar Android Wear experience, but it will give Chinese Android fans a wearable option they haven't had before.
