Razer says software, not hardware, is holding back mobile gaming

In between launching a range of outlandish pink products and affordable accessories so far this year, Razer made the surprising move of abandoning its online game store and mobile team. The latter, in particular, is an awkward move after two generations of Razer Phones, while the likes of ASUS, Xiaomi, Nubia and Vivo are capitalizing on the rapidly growing mobile gaming market. Never one to admit defeat, CEO Min-Liang Tan said this was just part of his company's evolving mobile gaming strategy, with its focus shifted to software as the industry transitions to 5G.

Razer is expected to unveil its second phone today, and another leak has given us a more detailed look at what's to come. Last month, leaked images showed that the Razer Phone 2 would look very much like its predecessor, with a couple of exceptions, but a prematurely posted product listing from Amazon Italy has now laid out a few of the phone's specs.

Razer is expected to unveil its second phone on October 10th

Razer sent out invitations today for an October 10th event where it's expected to unveil its Razer Phone 2. The invite doesn't say as much, but the company noted in a financial report last month that it was working on a follow up to its Razer Phone and some reported images of the new phone leaked earlier this week. If it is launching its latest gaming-geared smartphone, it's doing so just one day after Google reveals its newest Pixel phones and a day before Samsung's upcoming Galaxy event. That's a lot of phones in one week. But don't forget, there's also a Microsoft Surface event, a Huawei launch and likely a OnePlus debut in October as well. Hope you're ready for a lot of new gadgets.

Looks like Razer's latest update for its first smartphone should be worth installing. The new software enables support for Netflix HDR videos as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, so you can better immerse yourself in your favorite fictional universe. This makes the Razer Phone one of a handful of smartphones available that can render the streaming giant's HDR content, and the first to offer both HDR10 and Dolby Digital 5.1 support.

It's CES, and that means Razer is in Las Vegas with another one of its concepts. As the company recently released its first smartphone, it's not too surprising that the Project Linda hardware ties into that: It's a laptop dock for the Razer Phone.

If you're a fan of mobile entertainment, the Razer Phone is about to get better. At CES, the company just announced that it's entering a partnership with Netflix and that the handset will be the first mobile phone to offer Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. That's in addition to HDR10 video. Basically, it's the highest-quality Netflix experience you can get that still fits into your pocket.

Razer gives its phone a major camera update

When the Razer Phone was first announced, we didn't know what to expect. Sure, the company had Nextbit, but a handset just "for gamers?" The whole thing smelled like a gimmick. Turns out, we needn't have worried. The Razer Phone is a solid flagship with a 5.7-inch, quad HD display (and a rare 120Hz refresh rate), a huge battery and loud front-facing speakers. The only problem? The camera is pretty average. Thankfully, Razer has heard fan complaints and pushed out a sizeable software update. Exactly what it's changed is a mystery, but the result should be "improved picture quality" with less noise, punchier colors and clearer shadows.

Razer Phone review: A tough sell, even if it's great for gamers

Razer is mostly known for its gaming hardware, so it was a little surprising when the company acquired phone-maker Nextbit earlier this year. Eleven months later, and it finally revealed the results of that acquisition: The Razer Phone. Just like the rest of Razer's lineup, the company's first smartphone was built with gaming in mind. Even so, the Razer Phone has features that would please non-gamers too. Whether it's worth $700, however, is another question.

Razer Phone hands-on: Built for gamers, good enough for everyone

Razer is best known for its gaming PCs, but everyone knew what its acquisition of smartphone startup Nextbit meant: The company wanted to get into handsets too. The big question was, how does Razer, which prides itself as a gamer-first company, actually build a gamer-first phone? Few phone makers have bothered trying, and those that did — like Sony and Motorola — didn't find the success they were looking for. Razer's approach is a little different. With its new $699 Razer Phone, the company tried to balance pure power with a handful of fascinating hardware features. In doing so, Razer has built a gaming phone that you don't have to be a gamer to appreciate when it launches on November 17.

We knew that Razer was working on a high-end gaming smartphone, but a leak from one of its partners shows just how powerful it might be. According to a (since deleted) page from a UK mobile plan reseller called 3G, the Razer Phone will have a 5.7-inch, 120Hz IGZO display, Dolby Atmos sound with dual front speakers and amps, a dual 12- and 13-megapixel wide angle/zoom camera, 4,000mAh battery and 8GB of RAM. Adding credibility to the leak is the fact that 3G is a retail partner with UK operator Three, which recently announced an "exciting global strategic alliance" with Razer.
