  • Street Fighter X Tekken: Welcome to the festival

I remember the days of sitting in my buddy's room, losing repeatedly to his Vega as my Dhalsim flailed in front of pixelated, braying elephants. With every loss came the time to give up the controller for the next player in line. Depending on how many people were over, a sort of cheering section would develop. Fueled by Dr. Pepper and bags of potato chips, these impromptu parties are memories that I'm sure I share with many gaming folks.Street Fighter x Tekken is doing its best to recreate those moments. We already know it's bringing together two of the biggest fighting game franchises on the market, thus creating a huge, varied cast. The Tekken characters have been given the Street Fighter IV treatment, creating a stylized, almost cartoonish look. Their new animations are just as stylized. They're clearly ready to party.%Gallery-144912%

  • Street Fighter X Tekken trailer reveals new characters, teases ... Pac-Man in Vita version

Capcom released a new Street Fighter X Tekken trailer, showing new characters for the crossover fighter, including Balrog, Juri, Vega, Paul, Law, and Xiaoyu. But that's not important right now. What is important is a tease for the Vita version at the end of the trailer, which shows silhouettes of what is clearly Pac-Man, and what appears to be some kind of Mega Man variant. Mega Man in a fighting game is relatively common (and still welcome), but Pac-Man? We now live in a time in which a yellow sphere from a 1980 arcade game can beat up on the guy from Infamous. Wondrous!

  • Harada 'considering' Tekken X Street Fighter on Vita

Namco producer Katsuhiro Harada is leading up production of Tekken X Street Fighter -- he's the Yoshinori Ono of Namco, if you will. And like his Capcom counterpart, Harada has repeatedly taken to Twitter to answer fan questions about his current project, most recently telling one Twitter user that he's currently "considering" a Vita port of the title. He didn't mention much else, unfortunately, though he did take time to promote an upcoming community vote via the game's Facebook page, that'll allow fans to choose which characters end up in the upcoming fighter. One follower suggested both Final Fight's famed crossdresser, Poison, as well as Street Fighter Alpha 3's Karin. We're gonna go out on a limb and ask Harada for Ryu and Eddy Gordo. Those guys never get any time in the spotlight!

  • Mad Catz unveils a suite of Street Fighter X Tekken sticks

Mad Catz's Street Fighter X Tekken FightSticks have changed since we last saw them. Not only has the company abandoned the red-and-white colorway, there are now more sticks in the line. The now-black FightStick Pro is the next evolution of the Tournament Edition stick, with Sanwa parts and internal cable storage. The Arcade FightStick VS. Edition seems to be similar in design, but two of them can be connected with an optional attachment to create a continuous arcade machine-style panel. And the new FightPad SD is 15% smaller than previous FightPads, "inspired by the gaming preferences of legendary Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono." No prices were given for any of these new accessories, but Mad Catz did offer the expected release window: concurrent with the game's March 6 debut.%Gallery-143998%

The organizers of the Evo fighting game tournament series have revealed this year's lineup of games, allowing you to start practicing now! Ideally, you'd have been playing a bunch of fighters already, but now you have a better idea of which ones you should be obsessively replaying. The roster includes Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Ver. 2012, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Soulcalibur 5, King of Fighters 13, and Mortal Kombat. Admittedly, you'll have a harder time getting practice in on a couple of those right now. The locations and dates for this year's events were also announced, with tournaments scheduled for all over the world. Shoryuken has the full list of locations for fightstick-toting pilgrims. This year, there are more tournaments, "which means more chances to earn seeding points." In addition, you can earn those points from any of those games, making it easier to move on if you're not a Street Fighter or MvC3 player.

  • Xiaoyu and M. Bison leaked for Street Fighter X Tekken

The cross-over character cavalcade of fun that is Street Fighter X Tekken continues to hemorrhage new fighters, albeit this time the announcement is somewhat less flashy (and far more unintentional) than previous roster reveals. A new screenshot uploaded to SFXT's Xbox Live Marketplace page, upon close inspection, shows the portraits of Iron Fist veteran Ling Xiaoyu and Shadowloo head honcho M. Bison, as seen in the zoomed and enhanced image above. This brings the game's character stable to an even 30 fighters, PS3/Vita exclusive peeps not included. We're excited about the prospect of psycho-crushing our foes once again, but we also can't help but be disappointed by SFXT's severe lack of snake-arm minotaurs and farting dinosaurs.

  • Street Fighter X Tekken crossing up franchise costumes

It looks as though Street Fighter X Tekken will be mixing up more than Capcom and Namco fighters. According to Capcom-Unity, the game will be swapping costumes between the two franchises as well. Capcom has posted many images of the crossover clothing, and you may peruse them if you wish, but we'd say this shot of Kuma dressed as R. Mika adequately expresses the situation.

  • Ono: SFxTekken uses new netcode, don't expect a 'Super' version on disc

We recommend filing this one under "Things to take with a grain of salt" in your PR filing cabinet, but Capcom veteran and long-time Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono has told Gematsu that there will be no boxed versions of any future Street Fighter X Tekken updates: "I would say that you don't really need to worry about a new version of the game coming out. If we choose to update the game, it will be done in the same fashion as Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition." "The same fashion," as you'll recall, involves releasing an updated version of the game as DLC rather than at retail, and for a discounted price. It sounds great, and we certainly hope Capcom goes that route from now on, but Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's existence isn't the most reassuring thing. Ono also said that Street Fighter X Tekken will make use of brand-new netcode, rather than the code used in SSF4:AE or UMvC3. He didn't go into specifics as to what differences or improvements they're hoping to make, but decreasing latency and improving match-up algorithms usually take front and center when improving netcode. We're optimistic that Ono's words will ring true, but we also know that we can't always get what we want.

It may sound like a dull hum from all the way over there in Outworld, but the Street Fighter community has been a noisy, combative warzone lately, and not in a good way. See, ever since Capcom outlined Street Fighter X Tekken's Gem System, Street Fighter devotees (and competitive fighters in general) have been conducting heated debates over the system's merits, drawbacks and implications for serious tournament play, as well as the impact it will have on the casual fighting community. Seth Killian, Capcom Community Manager and face of all things Street Fighter in North America, chatted with Gamasutra to expound upon some of the Gem System's intricacies and the design philosophy behind it. First and foremost, Killian stressed that the system has been part of SFxT's design philosophy for years, and that it represents the proverbial "nerd feather" that intrigues analytical theorycraft-style gamers.

  • Ono on why Namco and Capcom are keeping separate while collaborating

In a Capcom developer interview, Street Fighter X Tekken producer Yoshinori Ono said that he isn't interested in checking up on Namco's work on the collaborative project -- and they aren't checking up on his. "Basically, there's no point in developing a game separately if you're constantly getting in each person's way," Ono said. "For example, if we checked the work Namco had done on Ryu, we definitely want to tweak things ourselves. The same is true for Namco. There's no point in mutually checking each other's work, for it would diminish the individuality of each party. It has to be 'Capcom does Tekken' and Namco does Street Fighter.'" Ono went on to say that the cross-company project is meant to "build a foundation for the next ten years of fighting games" by inspiring these two major players to make their best work.

It only makes sense there'd be another EVO, right? Last year's tournament was watched by over two million people online, and 2012's main event tournament is looking to blow it up even bigger. EVO 2012 has been scheduled for July 6 through 8, and will once again take place at Caesar's Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. No participating games have been revealed, though Street Fighter X Tekken and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Ver. 2012 are likely candidates.

Everyone's favorite pot-bellied pugilist is heading to Street Fighter X Tekken, as revealed by Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono during a panel tonight at the New York Comic Con (and teased just last month). Despite being comically overweight and rocking an extra long rat tail, the rotund reveal was met with mixed reaction from a raucous crowd of hardcore Street Fighter players. The ever jubilant Yoshinori Ono, however, was all smiles, happily noting that plenty more character reveals are on the way.%Gallery-136564%

Street Fighter X Tekken will release March 6, 2012 in North America and March 9 in Europe on PS3 and Xbox 360, and is still scheduled to launch alongside the PS Vita whenever that piece drops. To tide its intrepid fighters over, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition is getting a free update Dec. 13, titled Version 2012. That's what we call a K.O., people. [Update] Capcom has announced details for the special edition of Street Fighter X Tekken, which will include: Street Fighter X Tekken game Build-It-Yourself Arcade Cabinet Bank (approximately 5"H) Exclusive Prequel Comic Book by UDON 36 Gems: Includes All Pre-Order Packs Plus An Exclusive Pack Pre-Order Bonus: Nine Exclusive Gems Only Available For Pre-Ordering Special Edition Total of 45 Gems When You Pre-Order Capcom also provided a fistful of new screenshots, which you can check out right here:

  • New Street Fighter X Tekken trailers tease Dan, Mecha Zangief and others

"But wait," you might be thinking. "Isn't Dan Hibiki, founder of the Saikyo-ryu school of martial arts and proprieter of the Saikyo Dojo deceased? Wasn't he killed during the Street Fighter X Tekken announcement at E3?" Quite right, intrepid fighting fan! Our understanding of the situation has been much the same, and yet the long, luxurious ponytail and pink gi seen in the above trailer are unmistakably Hibiki. It appears as though Capcom has taken to teasing multiple characters per trailer, however, as some of those body parts also look distinctively Juri-esque. Punch through the break for two more teasers, one of which flashes some undeniably Mecha Zangief goodness. Keep in mind that just because a character is identified in one of these videos, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be playable in-game. Mecha Zangief has already been spotted in the background of at least one SFXT stage, so only time will tell.

During TGS, Capcom revealed Street Fighter X Tekken's "Pandora Mode," which allows players to sacrifice a character in order to give the tag partner infinite EX meter before also dying, allowing for last-ditch comeback efforts. Curious about the motivation for this kind of crazy mode, I asked producer Yoshinori Ono, who then proceeded to take me to school about the differences in flow between Street Fighter and Tekken games.

  • Ono: Porting Street Fighter X Tekken to Vita isn't hard, but integrating rear touch panel might be

    by

    09.18.2011

Street Fighter X Tekken producer Yoshinori Ono told me that he hasn't had much trouble in technical terms porting the game over to PlayStation Vita ("When I say 'I' of course I mean the programmers," he clarified, "because I'm not doing this myself.") "A lot of people, when they're porting to new hardware, especially a handheld, they'll talk about how it's difficult because of memory restrictions or speed or things like that, and I haven't found that to be the case." His team has been able to confer with the team working on the Vita version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, as well, further streamlining the process. The difficulty isn't in the technical stuff, it's in making smart use of the Vita's features. "We've been putting less energy into the porting process itself and more energy into adding additional features, because we don't want to do a straight-up port -- that's silly and meaningless."

  • Vita Street Fighter X Tekken will share DLC with PS3 version, may have tiny arcade stick

    by

    09.16.2011

Given recent Capcom fighters, it should come as no surprise that Street Fighter X Tekken will have DLC. Producer Yoshinori Ono told Joystiq today, "Post-launch for an allotted period of time there will be free DLC and paid DLC, and it will keep going for a while." But that's not the cool part. Capcom is also planning to make the DLC cross-compatible between the PS3 and PlayStation Vita versions. "With the PS3 and the Vita," Ono said, "yes, they're different hardware, but they're part of the same Playstation family, so to speak, so we're already talking with Sony about ways to sync things together. As long as you're using the same PSN account, things you've purchased on the Vita version will work on PS3 and vice versa." Capcom was a pioneer on 3DS with Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, adding things like online play and significant StreetPass functionality well before other 3DS games, and it looks like Capcom is keeping that forward-thinking attitude for this Vita game. I asked Ono on a lark about the possibility of a tiny arcade stick for the Vita -- maybe something like the 3DS slidepad thingy, but with arcade hardware. "We're actually talking to Mad Catz about doing something like that," Ono told us. "You can't replicate the experience entirely on a portable, but I think if we made a small joystick that you could just keep in your bag, and maybe even if you're in economy class, whip it out during a flight, put your Vita in there, and replicate to some degree the arcade experience, it would be really awesome." It's in keeping with Ono's view of portable fighters as practice tools for competitive console/arcade versions. Capcom emphasized that this is just in talks, and nothing has been decided. But tiny arcade stick!

  • Street Fighter X Tekken's Pandora Mode: how to win by killing yourself

    by
    JC Fletcher

    09.15.2011

Capcom's Seth Killian was kind enough to introduce me to Street Fighter X Tekken's notably unkind new "Pandora Mode," a desperation move that can only be activated when a character has less than 25% health, kills that character, and gives that person's tag partner an infinite EX meter -- for about eight seconds, after which that character is also killed. "They basically sacrifice themselves to the pandora box, which loves fighting, and which has brought the Tekken and Street Fighter universes together," Killian explained, offering a narrative reasoning for this new element. He then distinguished this from Marvel vs. Capcom 3's "X Factor" and other desperation moves. "There's really no disadvantage to them," he noted. "You get them for being beaten up, but there's no disadvantage. This has a massive disadvantage." It might be good for a comeback -- but it's not going to turn the tide of a one-sided battle, because you have only eight seconds to make your desperate salvo.
