'Pyre' is an awesome sports game masquerading as fantasy heroics

Pyre is the latest title from Supergiant Games, the indie studio that earned instant acclaim for its debut Bastion and follow-up Transistor. Like its predecessors, Pyre features lush hand-drawn art and a vibrant soundtrack, along with a pulpy fantasy-esque plot. But unlike the sword-and-gunplay of Supergiant's earlier hits, Pyre does something few fantasy games dare: It makes you play sports. Which means it could be the game that slips past players' defenses and opens these siloed genres up to each other.

Your wallet is about to get a bit lighter. Or, if you lack self-control, a lot lighter. That's because over the next 13 days games on Steam will be marked down dramatically during this year's summer sale. The first crop includes up to half off the Final Fantasy franchise and 70 percent off underwater indie charmer Abzu. Hyper Light Drifter has been discounted by half as well, and if you wanted to explore Mafia III's version of the Luisiana bayou, now it'll only cost you around $15.

Bastion's dream-like watercolor visuals and deep, satisfying RPG mechanics won it plenty of praise back in 2011. Since its launch on PC and Xbox 360, the game has been ported to a range of platforms including Mac, PS4 and Android. Now, developer Supergiant Games is bringing its debut adventure to Xbox One. The new, "faithful adaptation" arrives on December 12th and will be free until the New Year for people who purchased the Xbox 360 version. Otherwise, you'll need to fork out $14.99 to brawl as "the Kid" and listen to the narrator's gruff, dulcet tones.

Pyre tells the story of three wanderers living in exile in a vast purgatory called the Downside, fighting for the chance to rejoin their homeland. They travel and battle in the Rites, a secret competition for those in exile who wish to be absolved, fighting together with a blend of magic and dexterity. While much of the game remains cloaked in mystery, it's due to hit PlayStation 4 and Steam simultaneously in 2017.

It's a good day to be a Vita owner. Bastion, the gorgeous 2011 isometric adventure from Supergiant Games, is out today on Sony's handheld console. The company announced Bastion's latest launch during its PlayStation Experience keynote this morning. This brings Bastion's platforms up to seven: PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, iOS, Chrome, PlayStation 4 and, now, Vita. It's a Cross-Buy game on Sony's platforms, meaning if you own it on PS4, you automatically get it on Vita, and vice versa. Score!

  • 'Transistor' takes its sci-fi swordplay to iPhone and iPad

Dig Transistor's blend of hack-and-slash action, role-playing elements, and sci-fi storytelling? You no longer have to sit down in front of your console or PC to give a shot. Supergiant Games has released Transistor as a universal app for both iPhones and iPads, so you can carry on the adventures of Red and her giant, intelligent sword when you're on the move. The mobile title has a new touch-oriented control scheme, although there's also an optional "Classic Controls" option if you'd prefer gamepad-like input. There's no mention of an Android version, but we wouldn't count on one when Bastion hasn't received an Android port so far.

  • Transistor coming to the PS4, Sony doubles down on indie games

Amir Rao and Gavin Simon from Supergiant Games hopped on stage with Sony to announce that Transistor, the company's next title will be making its console debut on the PlayStation 4. The creators of Bastion will be making Sony's console their home early next year and it's bound to be one of the highlights of this year's E3. But, if you think the embrace of indie developers ends with the cyber-punk follow up to the surprisingly successful and original Bastion, you're wrong. Klei Games is bringing its hit Don't Starve to the PS4 and Octodad: Dadliest Catch from Young Horses is also on tap. Ragtag Studios, Red Barrels and 17-Bit Games are also bringing titles to the PlayStation before other consoles. There's even going to be a remake of Oddworld, called Oddworld: New 'n Tasty. Huzzah! And don't miss the trailer for Transistor after the break. Follow all of our E3 2013 coverage at our event hub.

Who would've thought that letting consumers pay what they think is fair for quality games would prove popular? That's the concept behind Humble Bundle, and so far, it's been rather good to developers and charities alike. Now, deals from the company are set to get a whole lot more frequent, as it's just announced weekly game sales that'll supplement the monthly bundle offers. You'll find a new game from Humble Bundle go up for sale each Tuesday, and to kick things off, the company is starting with Bastion, an RPG from Supergiant Games. Just $1 nets you a Steam key to the game, but if common decency isn't enough of a reason to pay more, you'll find bonus content and merchandise up for grabs, too. This week's charities include the EFF and Child's Play, but you've only got seven days to act before another game takes its place. Best start checking it out, and you can start with a demo of Bastion after the break.

  • Punch Quest now costs a dollar, Bastion is universal

Here are two big updates to really great games on iOS. First, Punch Quest (which is one of my favorite iOS games this year so far) started out as a freemium title, given away for free with a number of in-app purchases to support it financially. But developers Rocketcat Games have said in the past that the in-app purchases just aren't making enough money to continue development, so they've taken the hazardous step of raising the app's price to US$0.99. Punch Quest is a terrific title that's well worth a buck or more, so hopefully it'll do better for the devs at the higher price. Second, Bastion, the XBLA hit that made its way to the iPad a little while ago, has released an update that makes the game universal. In fact, not only does the game now work on both iPhone and iPad, but it's also been updated to work with the iPhone 5's wider screen. iCloud syncing has been included as well, so all of your progress from the iPad should move over. Bastion is another terrific title, and it's available on the App Store right now for $4.99.
