Yesterday in Second Life there was: 16,668 new signups bringing the total to 11,966,382 signups. A peak concurrency of 56,764 at 1:50PM, and a minimum concurrency of 31,145 at 1:10AM. Median concurrency for the day was 43,217. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.40 (lower is better). There was a short bout of instability around 4:30PM where many users suddenly experienced asset problems. Linden Lab announced a short-notice rolling restart for Thursday to deploy new code intended to alleviate database pressure.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 16,213 new signups bringing the total to 11,949,714 signups. A peak concurrency of 57,215 at 1:55PM, and a minimum concurrency of 31,259 at 1:15AM. Median concurrency for the day was 43,043. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.27 (lower is better). High concurrency and relatively smooth performance through the day. Hopefully this trend will continue. A new release candidate viewer, 1.18.6(RC4) was released. Median signup rates remain relatively steady at 55 days per million. The 12 millionth signup is due roughly on the Friday the 18th.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 15,556 new signups bringing the total to 11,933,501 signups. A peak concurrency of 57,770 at 1:40PM, and a minimum concurrency of 32,377 at 11:55PM. Median concurrency for the day was 43,543. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.36 (lower is better). Not too many problems during the day, though some minor frustrations were reported by residents, particularly in the late afternoon. Linden Lab are still keeping quiet about their plans for age-verification, even though there are suggestions that it's close to going live and final.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,589 new signups bringing the total to 11,917,945 signups. A peak concurrency of 61,560 (a new record!) at 1:45PM, and a minimum concurrency of 34,399 at 11:55PM. Median concurrency for the day was 46,627. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.31 (lower is better). Things ran very smoothly today up until 1:45PM (the record peak) at which point users began reporting sour behaviour on the grid. Concurrency began to fall sooner than expected as users began having difficulty logging in - logins remained problematic, according to reports for the next several hours. The peak was 2,822 above the previous best (Sunday 6 January). For comparison purposes, Everquest's record concurrency is reported to have been approximately 90,000 which puts Linden Lab's virtual world more than two thirds of the way there in terms of usage.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,029 new signups bringing the total to 11,899,992 signups. A peak concurrency of 58,483 at 2:40PM, and a minimum concurrency of 33,968 at 1:50AM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,564. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.04 (lower is better). A smooth day on the grid - at last, despite near record concurrency. Median signup rates remain steady at 52 days per million. The 12 millionth signup is due roughly on the Friday the 18th.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 16,085 new signups bringing the total to 11,882,537 signups. A peak concurrency of 56,888 at 2:55PM, and a minimum concurrency of 31,658 at 1:15AM. Median concurrency for the day was 45,183. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.27 (lower is better). A few minor rough patches through the day, but overall the grid performed quite well, for a change. The Havok beta was refreshed with new code and bug-fixes. The new 1.18.6 authentication system was suspended pending redesign later this year. The ACLU began a series of educational events, focusing on Guantanamo bay detention center. Median signups remain relatively stable at 745/hour (approximately 53 days per million). The twelve millionth signup is due roughly on the 18th.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,009 new signups bringing the total to 11,866,147 signups. A peak concurrency of 56,608 at 1:50PM, and a minimum concurrency of 31,245 at 1:30AM. Median concurrency for the day was 42,812. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.17 (lower is better). On the whole a relatively smooth day, though some users are reporting consistent link failures with large numbers of prims, and others are reporting an unusual slow-down in script performance since the Wednesday update. Linden Lab says that support phone lines will be down for maintenance on Sunday, from 4AM to 6AM SLT (US Pacific). Our own Akela posted the second part of the transcript of the fireside chat with Philip Rosedale and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Linden Lab has started releasing customer service metrics. A new First Look/Windlight viewer was released.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 12,103 new signups bringing the total to 11,848,774 signups. A peak concurrency of 52,533 at 2:50PM. Median concurrency for the day was 33,241. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 17.31 (lower is better). The grid was shut down for a capacity update. Timestamps on the Linden blog were bungled, but it looks like the grid came live just a little after scheduled, at 12:15PM SLT. There were problems with the grid again around 2:30PM. Later at approximately 5PM there were additional problems with the asset systems. Philip Rosedale gave a general update about 2007, the Emmy Award, and plays going forward. Our own Akela posted the first part of a transcript of the fireside chat with Philip Rosedale and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Part 2 is due later today.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 18,599 new signups bringing the total to 11,836,671 signups. A peak concurrency of 56,417 at 1:55PM, and a minimum concurrency of 32,011 at 11:50PM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,189. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.78 (lower is better). The above numbers are a bit unreliable due to faulty feeds, however they do seem to be functioning again today. Second Life was honored at CES2008. Linden Lab banned banks (specifically institutions that pay interest). More on that at the top of the hour. Logins failed in the early morning, and the failure of multiple databases in the evening caused logins to be closed until repairs could be effected. Live chat in the support system also failed and required repairs.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 11,983 new signups bringing the total to 11,818,072 signups. A peak concurrency of 56,440 at 1:50PM, and a minimum concurrency of 30,577 at 1:25AM. Median concurrency for the day was 43,660. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 2.34 (lower is better). Poor day - logins spent the better part of the morning disabled or erratic. This apparently was due to database problems, but when corrected neither JIRA nor wiki logins were responding. This was, in turn, traced to a bungled firewall configuration. Robin Linden spoke at Metanomics today. The sim was full, there were login issues (as noted above) and the stream from slcn.tv was reportedly broken for much of the session, but is now viewable. The servers which run the Second Life forums were relocated without advance notice - the announcement came six minutes after downtime was to commence. Bonus points for map difficulties - with the inworld map service apparently bungling the locations of simulators.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 16,906 new signups bringing the total to 11,805,675 signups. A peak concurrency of 58,738 (a new record!) at 1:40PM, and a minimum concurrency of 26 at 7:25AM (due to the abrupt morning shutdown). Median concurrency for the day was 41,815. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 22.46 (lower is better). Despite a terrible day for stability with two significant outages, the grid had a record day for concurrency, peaking at 58,738 - a record two days in a row. It does not appear that the stability problems are directly related to the load. Group dividends haven't apparently been working properly for the last day or two (again) - these are now reported as fixed (at least until next time).

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 16,588 new signups bringing the total to 11,788,769 signups. A peak concurrency of 58,363 (a new record!) at 3:00PM, and a minimum concurrency of 33,299 at 2:05AM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,950. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.44 (lower is better). Concurrency was at a record high, though it didn't beat the previous record by very much. Quite unusual for a Saturday. If the grid holds stable, Sunday should be another record peak. Median signup rates are relatively stable at just over 700 per hour, and the twelve millionth signup should be due around the 18th of January, unless there are significant changes.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 15,520 new signups bringing the total to 11,771,829 signups. A peak concurrency of 57,246 at 2:35PM, and a minimum concurrency of 30,062 at 1:15AM. Median concurrency for the day was 45,713. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.54 (lower is better). Thursday's troubles were finally sorted out after 2AM. Another short round of what appear to be asset-related troubles during the late morning. A grid shutdown was announced for next Wednesday to (apparently) correct the problems caused by the update last Wednesday, based on the information made available. Linden Lab sent us an unsolicited statement on fraudulent funds griefing (which actually didn't cover the topic), and then another one which does, but may be at odds with the experience of residents who have been victims of this practice in the past.

Median concurrency for the day was 41,127. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 3.23 (lower is better). There were asset/inventory issues throughout the day. As of Midnight the problems were still ongoing. Problems with the Support Portal too. Three new improvements to the Public JIRA.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 15,624 new signups bringing the total to 11,740,141 signups. A peak concurrency of 55,953 at 1:45PM, and a minimum concurrency of 29,372 at 1:05AM. Median concurrency for the day was 42,142. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.83 (lower is better). Not such a great day on the grid. One server failed in the early hours of the morning, causing users associated with that server to have difficulties creating objects or logging in. The rolling restart scheduled to begin between 10AM and 11AM didn't commence until approximately 1:40PM and didn't finish until 9:20PM, disrupting plans and schedules for users through most of the day. During the rolling restart the 1.18.6 login service failed for 40 minutes denying logins for users with any of the First Look/Windlight or Release Candidate viewers. An inventory server crashed at approximately 5PM and was not apparently brought back into service for nearly five hours.

Median concurrency for the day was 39,024. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.22 (lower is better). Concurrency was typical for the last day of the year, and grid performance was smooth. Hopefully that is a trend that will continue.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 18,613 new signups bringing the total to 11,692,978 signups. A peak concurrency of 57,163 at 2:35PM, and a minimum concurrency of 31,762 at 1:55AM. Median concurrency for the day was 44,624. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.20 (lower is better). Concurrency for the day was very close to record levels, and grid operations remained surprisingly smooth. Hollywood Reporter ranked Second Life the eighth most effective television placement for 2007.
