<p>Microsoft has confirmed what many saw as inevitable: the Xbox will have a Blu-ray drive. The company just announced the victor in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/20/two-years-of-battle-between-hd-dvd-and-blu-ray-a-retrospective/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">drive wars</a> will be installed as a slot-loading front unit in each new Xbox One along with a 500GB HDD, a 360-degree switch from Redmond's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/16/xbox-360-hd-dvd-add-on-drive-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">last console</a>, as it were. As we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-hardware-and-specs/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">noted</a> earlier, games purchased on Blu-ray disks will be ripped to the hard disk automatically to keep usage down. Microsoft <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/05/microsoft-denies-xbox-360-blu-ray-reports-yet-again/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">heavily resisted</a> the move to Blu-ray in the Xbox 360, but has caved to the inevitable, no doubt having come to an agreement with Sony, Panasonic and Philips (the owners of the tech), through gritted teeth.</p>

<p>Sharp has just introduced a couple of high-end TVs if you're rich enough to be seeking an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UltraHD/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">UltraHD</a> set and lucky enough to live in Japan: the 70-inch LC-70UD1 and the 60-inch LC-60UD1, part of the new 4K Aquos UD1 series. Each will feature Sharp's 4K "Moth-eye" panel, Aquos 4K-Master Engine Pro HD upconversion engine, 2.1 channel THX surround and 3D capability. The 70-inch model will run 850,000 yen ($8,290) and launch on June 15th, while the 60-inch set will arrive August 10th for 650,000 yen ($6,335). There's no word yet on a stateside arrival, but based on what <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/sharp-aquos-ultra-hd-1080p-hdtvs-eyes-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sharp said</a> at CES 2013 in January, it may join a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/sharp-launches-aquos-ultra-hd-panel/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">32-inch 4K Aquos model</a> sometime later this year.</p>

<p>For the first time ever, a production-grade Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II has performed a vertical takeoff (VTO) maneuver, followed by a short <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/f-35b-supersonic-jets-first-mid-air-hover-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">hover</a> at low altitude and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/27/f-35b-fighter-jets-first-vertical-landing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">vertical landing</a>. Though the US Marines had required such a function from the outset of the program (which has already been performed by prototype F-35Bs) it can only be used for very short jaunts. That's because the $300 million jet, like the Harrier before it, can't carry any armaments or much fuel in such a configuration -- meaning almost all of its takeoff and landings will be of the non-vertical, short variety instead. Meanwhile, the Air Force said it'll deploy the F-35A variant a year earlier than predicted in mid-2016, according to <em>Reuters</em>, giving the much beleaguered program a double-shot of good news. Head after the break to catch the rather dramatic video.</p>

The league has teamed up with Microsoft on an exclusive app to bring schedules, standings, video highlights, play-by-play, game stats, cards and substitutions to Windows 8 Pro and RT. You'll also be able to get custom updates on your live tiles to see how your team is doing with a glance at the start screen. MLS and Microsoft said they're also bringing "fan and stadium experiences," like trying out Windows 8 on Microsoft Surface tablet at over 40 games during the season, and alluded to bringing "immersive soccer experiences" to players, coaches and fans down the road. We'll have to see exactly what they mean by that, but meanwhile, you can grab the app at the source.</p>

<p><em>In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. <p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/20/insert-coin-linkbot/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Insert Coin Linkbot" data-src-height="340" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/linkbox-05-2013-04.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>Everybody loves robots, but the initial ardor for building one can quickly be snuffed out by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/20/irl-logitech-ue-air-speaker-canon-rebel-xt-arduino-uno/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">complex reality</a> of actually programming it to do anything. That's where Linkbot comes in, a new project from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/barobo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Barobo</a> team that brought us the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/19/barobo-mobot-modular-robot-pre-order-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Mobot</a>. It's designed as a modular system that can be expanded infinitely with accessories like a camera mount, gripper, and wheels, thanks to three separate mounting surfaces -- which also have standard #6-32 screw attachment holes on the mounting plate to attach personality-enhancing cutouts. Despite the expansion potential, though, it can still be used right out of the box to do robotics without touching a lick of code. That's thanks to several built-in modes like BumpConnect, which permits wireless connections between the modules by touching them together; and PoseTeach, to program complex motions by hand in a similar (but less time-consuming) manner to stop-motion animation techniques.</p>

<p>For those who want to step it up a notch, the system lets you go far past basic mech fun. The Linkbot itself has two rotating hubs with absolute encoding, along with an accelerometer, buzzer, multicolored LCD and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/zigbee/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ZigBee</a> wireless system with a 100m line-of-sight range. There are also optional breakout and Bluetooth boards to connect sensors like range finders, IR proximity sensors, photo detectors and thermostats. The outfit's BaroboLink software for Mac, PC or Linux is included to program the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Arduino/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Arduino</a>-compatible bot in several languages as well, and can even translate previously created PoseTeach motions into computer routines. So far, the company has created working prototypes and even shipped them to local schools, so if you're interested, you can pledge a minimum $129 toward the company's $40,000 target to grab one. That'll net you a Linkbot, two wheels, the BaroboLink software, access to the MyBarobo community -- and hopefully a jolt to your robotics confidence.</p>

<p>Now that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/google-glass-rooted-and-hacked-to-run-ubuntu-live-at-google-i-o?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Glass</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/10/half-life-2-official-oculus-rift-beta-support/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Oculus Rift</a> have entered the zeitgeist, might we start to see VR and AR products popping up on every street corner? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/12/vuzix-wrap-1200ar-augmented-reality-glasses/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Perhaps</a>, but Meta has just launched an interesting take on the concept by marrying see-through, stereoscopic, display glasses with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/16/kinect-for-windows-sdk-17/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kinect</a>-style depth sensor. That opens up the possibility of putting virtual objects into the real world, letting you "pick up" a computer-generated 3D architectural model and spin it around in your hand, for instance, or gesture to control a virtual display appearing on an actual wall. To make it work, you connect a Windows PC to the device, which consists of a pair of 960 x 540 Epson displays embedded in the transparent glasses (with a detachable shade, as shown in the prototype above), and a depth sensor attached to the top. That lets the Meta 1 track your gestures, individual fingers and walls or other physical surfaces, all of which are processed in the PC with motion tracking tech to give the illusion of virtual objects anchored to the real world.</p>

<p>Apps can be created via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Unity3d/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Unity3D</a> and an included SDK on Windows computers (other platforms will arrive later, according to the team), with developers able to publish their apps on the upcoming Meta Store. The group has launched the project on Kickstarter with the goal of raising $100,000 to get developer kits into the hands of app coders, and though it's no Google, Meta is a Y Combinator startup and has several high-profile researchers on the team. As such, it's asking for exactly half of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/30/google-glass-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Glass' Explorer Edition</a> price as a minimum pledge to get in on the ground floor: $750. Once developers have had their turn, the company will turn its attention toward consumers and more sophisticated designs -- so if you like the ideas peddled in the video, hit the source to give them your money.</p>

<p>According to co-CEO <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/jkshin/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">JK Shin</a>, Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/samsung-galaxy-s-4-stock-google-io/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy S 4</a> will soon hit the 10 million mark in sales, less than a month after its debut. That beats the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/22/galaxy-s-iii-sales-breach-10-million-satisfy-samsung-executives/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy S III's time to that mark</a> by nearly three weeks, making it far and away the company's quickest seller, ever. The model will also get another push thanks to a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/samsung-galaxy-s-4-stock-google-io?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">stock Android 4.2 version</a> that'll be available for $649 at Google Play on June 26th. That's a pretty impressive figure, especially considering its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/relive-samsung-unpacked-2013-and-the-launch-of-the-galaxy-s-4-i/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">bizarre reveal</a>.</p>

<p>Though we know virtually nothing about any <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ChromeOs/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Chrome OS</a>-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/visualized-google-io-chromebook-circle/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">devices</a> in development at Google, we at least know what their engineers are calling them. Google insider <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/francoisbeaufort/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Fran&ccedil;ois Beaufort</a> revealed that developers working on such projects might be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/starfox/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Star Fox</a> fans, as several possible x86 devices seem to bear the Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy monikers, according to a recent changelog. None of this is proof of any future products, of course, but Fox and Slippy seem to be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/25/intel-haswell-north-cape-hands-on-battery-life/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Haswell</a>-equipped, according to Beaufort -- which would be a nice step up from their 1993-era Nintendo graphics power.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/idc-windows-phone-steals-third-place-blackberry/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Windows Phone steals third place from BlackBerry in IDC smartphone ranking " data-src-height="340" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/idc-smartphoneos-05-16-13-01.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>First and second place in the smartphone OS wars is a foregone conclusion with Android and iOS (respectively) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/900-million-android-activations/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">strongly entrenched</a>, but the battle for third place is now full of intrigue. BlackBerry and Microsoft have each stepped up their games with their respective <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/30/blackberry-os-10-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">BB10</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wp8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">WP8</a> OS's of late, but so far it's Redmond prevailing, having jumped two spots from <a href="http://having jumped to spots from last quarter to take third place">last quarter</a> to take third place, with a 3.2 percent share over BlackBerry's 2.9 percent. While those two are fighting for third place scraps, Android kicked up its smartphone OS dominance with 75 percent of the global market, which is a huge jump from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/idc-q1-2012-world-smartphone-share/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">last year</a>, while iOS fell back slightly to a 17.3 percent share. Between them, those titans owned 92.3 percent of the pie, but it's arguably Windows Phone that has raised its game the most, with a senior IDC analyst claiming that this latest ranking "validates the direction taken by Microsoft and key partner Nokia."</p>

<p>Smartphone camera flashes are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/23/snapture-flash-adds-crappy-flash-to-crappy-iphone-camera/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">notoriously weak</a> compared to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/nikon-launches-550-speedlight-sb-910-light-up-controls-and-the/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">dedicated models</a>, but what if you could fire them from several handsets at once? Since none of us have the millisecond timing needed to do it manually, Apple has filed a patent application to let any number of iOS (or other devices with a flash) fill in the light automatically. It'd work by using a master device as the camera, which would trigger slave devices positioned around the subject to fire their flashes when the shutter is opened. A test image would first be taken and analyzed by the software, which would then remotely adjust the intensity of the slave flashes to produce the final photo. The filing allows for virtually any device with a sensor to act as the capture device and a broad variety of illumination devices, including dedicated lights, smartphones, tablets or camera flashes -- though we imagine Apple would concentrate on its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone%205/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">own</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad+4/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">products</a>. If you're already planning to use friend #1 for a kicker light, friend #2 as an eye-light and friend #3 as a hair light on that next outing, please remember it's still just an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/patent%20application/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">application</a> for now.</p>

<p>During Google's I/O developer's conference keynote, it actually slipped in quite a bit of, yes, <em>developer</em> news amongst all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/google-play-music-all-access-hands-on?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">noisy</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/google-samung-galaxy-s-4-running-stock-android/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">consumer</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/google-play-game-services/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">launches</a>. One biggie was the announcement that any and all companies looking for computing horsepower can jump on board its formerly-limited Google Compute Engine, part of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/13/google-io-tracking-sensors/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Cloud Platform</a>. In order to compete with the kingpin of that space, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AmazonWebServices/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Amazon Web Services</a> (AWS) and its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/elastic+compute+cloud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Elastic Compute Cloud</a>, Google has bolstered its platform with new features, including shared-core instances for low-intensity chores, advanced routing, large persistent disks up to 10TB in volume size and sub-hour billing to keep costs down. It also updated its App Engine hosting service with PHP runtime, calling it "the most requested feature," and launched Google Cloud Datastore to go up against AWS' cloud storage services. All that will surely help Mountain View gain a bigger slice of the multi-billion dollar cloud infrastructure market, and should open up more space for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/900-million-android-activations/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">all those apps</a>.</p>

<p>Does your Android sound different from your iOS or WP? Perhaps <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/02/iphone-vs-rivals-audio-tests/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">a little</a>, but each has their own quirks when it comes to audio output and hands-free kits. To that end, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/jays/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Jays</a> will launch the a-JAYS Five earphones this summer with a separate version for each. It'll carry a three-button control setup similar to the last model, but will be optimized work differently depending on whether you have the iOS, Windows Phone or Android version -- a concept the company calls "iWA." We're not sure if that'll simmer down any flame wars, but you'll be able to grab one for &euro;90 (or $100) in black or white sometime this summer.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/necs-medias-x-smartphone-for-docomo-liquid-cooled/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="NEC's Medias X smartphone for DoCoMo features first ever liquidcooled CPU" data-src-height="340" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/mediasx-nec-05-15-13-04.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>NEC's just broken some new ground with the Medias X, the world's first liquid-cooled smartphone that was launched as part of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/ntt-docomos-summer-lineup-battery-life-colors/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">DoCoMo's summer lineup</a>. Rather than aiming it at the propeller-heads <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/water+cooling/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">usually associated</a> with that tech, though, NEC and DoCoMo are marketing it toward women in the same patronizing manner as the infamous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/htc-rhyme-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HTC Rhyme</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/22/fujitsu-arrows-kiss-f-03d-ladyphone-tells-you-sit-up-straight-e/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Fujitsu Arows Kiss F-03D</a>. But back to the handset itself: cooling for the quad-core <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/qualcomm-snapdragon-800-and-600-chips/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Snapdragon 600</a> CPU works via a liquid-charged tube from the processor to a graphite "radiator" along the system board that disperses heat. We're not exactly sure why the phone needs it, though, as the rest of the specs don't exactly scream overheating: Android 4.2, a 4.7-inch 720p display, LTE and a 13.1-megapixel Exmor RS camera. Though NEC claims the phone runs much cooler than a standard model (see the graphic after the break), we haven't heard too many complaints about hot phones lately -- but perhaps we're hanging with the wrong crowd.</p>

<p>While the semi-annual parade of new smartphone models at NTT DoCoMo often reveals some unexpected devices, this summer it had a bumper crop: we've already seen the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/sonys-xperia-a-android-4-1-smartphone-announced-for-ntt-docomo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Xperia A</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/ntt-docomo-aquos-phone-zeta-sh-06e-1080p-igzo-display?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sharp's Aquos Phone Zeta</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/aquos-pad-sh-08e-7-inch-high-res-igzo-display-quad-core-snapdragon-600/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Aquos Pad SH-08E</a> plus a Galaxy S4 in "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/13/galaxy-s-4-arctic-blue?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">arctic blue</a>." Seven more phones round out the lineup and NTT DoCoMo is trumpeting 2,100 mAh minimum batteries, LTE, NFC and quad-core processors for the entire gamut. Other standout models include Fujitsu's 5.2-inch, 1080P Arrows NX F-06E, a model with a 16-megapixel camera you'll likely never see stateside, Panasonic's Eluga V P-06D with a 4.7-inch 1080P screen and a whopping 2,600 mAh battery, and Disney Mobile's F-07D, which should be an endurance wonder with a 720P screen and 2,600mAh cell. Naturally, there's a rainbow of new hues for most of the models, which will roll out over the summer in Japan -- click the source link PDF for detailed specs or check the PR after the jump.</p>

<p><em>In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please <a href="http://www.engadget.com/about/tips/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">send us a tip</a> with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.</em></p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/insert-coin-connectify-switchboard/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Insert Coin Connectify Switchboard bonds all your internet connections into one" data-src-height="340" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/connectify-switchboard-05-14-13-03.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>When we last saw <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/23/insert-coin-connectify-dispatch/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Connectify</a>, it had brought its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/13/connectify-dispatch-now-available/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dispatch</a> internet connection combining software to Kickstarter, doubled its funding goal and launched the product into market. However, customers using it said they wanted more than the web browsing and BitTorrent streaming speed-ups the load-balancing app provided, and were looking for so-called connection aggregation tech that'd allow quicker video streaming, VPN access and Skype calls, too. As a result, the company has just launched Switchboard, a cloud based app that combines all your internet connections but appears as only one IP address.</p>

<p>To make it work, the company built new software from scratch and put together a network of cloud servers across the world. The result is a "channel bonding" system that Connectify says will speed up all your online activities: Dropbox or SkyDrive uploads and downloads, Google Hangout video conferencing and video streaming from the likes of Netflix, to name a few. A quick test of the beta software on our end has worked seamlessly so far, requiring just a software installation and two or more internet connections (two ADSL lines in our case). On top of speeding everything up as promised, we also noticed that our IP address appeared as that of the server we were connected to instead of our local one, which could be a bonus for those trying to access US internet from abroad. Connectify's looking to grab $100,000 in funding this time around, with pledges starting at $50 -- so if you're looking to finally click that "HD" button on Vimeo, hit the source.</p>

<p>Tempted to just send a quick SMS saying you're on the road to grab the milk? Don't -- or your recipient could receive a much <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/04/texting-while-driving-accident-chance-bothe/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">more dire</a> message, says a consortium of carriers including AT&amp;T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. Along with more than 200 other organizations including the DOT, NHTSA and NTSB, the carriers have joined AT&amp;T's "It Can Wait" campaign, which began in March 2010. The message will feature prominently at carrier stores, Best Buy, Goodyear and RadioShack locations, while insurer USAA is bringing the texting-while-driving simulator we saw earlier (in the video after the break) to more locations. In addition, HTC, Pantech and Samsung will preload AT&amp;T's DriveMode app (on select devices from the carrier) which impedes the practice, and you'll soon notice ads warning against it across social media and Clear Channel broadcasters. In case none of that drives the point home, remember that piloting a two-ton vehicle with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/23/study-voice-to-text-just-as-dangerous-as-texting/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">any distractions</a> is a ridiculously bad idea -- let alone one that takes your eyes completely off the road.</p>

Well, in the UK, Vodafone will start carrying a 32GB version of the handset exclusively next month, while O2 said it'd be the only UK carrier with a white model -- which you'll be able to grab on June 13th. As for the others, Three confirmed via a tweet that it'd carry the new handset and that it would be compatible with its Ultrafast services, while EE and Orange have yet to announce anything. Meanwhile, we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-lumia-925-is-coming-to-t-mobile/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">heard from T-Mobile</a> that it will be the exclusive home of the 925 in the US, at least at launch. <p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-announces-smart-camera-app-for-the-new-lumia-925/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Nokia announces Smart Camera app for the new Lumia 925" data-src-height="340" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokia-smart-cam-05-14-13-03.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>Here at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-lumia-event-london-liveblog/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nokia event</a> in London, we've seen the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-announces-the-lumia-925-a-thinner-lighter-aluminum-body/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia 925</a> go from rumor to reality, and now we're hearing more about the camera software debuting on the handset. For starters, the app has improved low-light performance and noise reduction, and will burst capture at 5-megapixels, with the full 8.7-megapixels available in single-shooting mode. Sports shooters will get Action Shot, which combines several images for a slow-mo effect, and Best Shot will let you (or the camera) choose one of 10 frames that gives the best overall image. Motion focus will add a blur effect to the background while keeping moving objects in focus, with the option to adjust the level of blur later.</p>

<p>Burst shooting also gives the ability to selectively choose the most (or least) hammy expressions on your subjects and finally, there's an option that lets you delete moving objects that might be in the way of your subject, as shown above. Nokia announced that Smart Camera won't just be limited to the Lumia 925 either, as all of the Finnish company's Windows 8 Phone devices will get it through Nokia's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-amber-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia Amber</a> firmware update, arriving sometime this summer. If none of that works for you, there's always <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/08/hipstamatic-launches-oggl/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Hipstamatic</a>, which was also just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/hipstamatic-windows-phone-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">trumpeted</a> for Windows Phone 8 at today's event.</p>

<p>Though some may look down on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/StarTrek/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Star Trek</a>'s fictional Klingon language and invoke the infamous phrase uttered by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/15/william-shatner-explains-what-microprocessors-are-and-do-from/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">William Shatner</a> -- "Get a life!" -- Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/24/irl-bing-translator-iosafe-n2-mophie-juice-pack-air/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Bing translation</a> team doesn't see it that way at all. As part of a marketing join-up with Paramount Pictures, the service will be offering translation of the fictional tongue to and from its other 41 languages to support the release of <em><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/26/aia-wants-a-pro-nasa-ad-in-front-of-star-trek/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Star Trek Into Darkness</a></em>. According to the <em>LA Times</em>, the translator was developed with the aid of Klingon-fluent Microsoft engineer Eric Andeen, who said that it's as much about the passion for linguistics as for Star Trek. Originally developed by a language specialist based on a few words ad-libbed in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/22/star-trek-tos-and-star-trek-the-motion-picture-trilogy-blu-ray-bo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>Star Trek: The Motion Picture</em></a> by 'Scotty' actor James Doohan, Klingon has taken on a life of its own thanks to fans and sites who developed full dictionaries and on-line translators. The Bing project will fire up later today, so why not check it out at the More Coverage link? After all, <em>ghojmeH ta'vaD He tu'be'lu'</em>!</p>

<p>When<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Flipboard/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"> Flipboard</a> launched version 2.0 on<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/26/flipboard-user-created-magazines-etsy/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"> iOS</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/flipboard-brings-magazine-curation-to-android/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Android</a> not long ago, its self-created magazines seemed to strike a chord with users. The latest version of the app for iOS, 2.02, is capitalizing on that popularity with new features that let you check out your readership and see complete profile pages of fellow curators. You'll also be able to see their work and share your own more easily, thanks to a new Friends category and updated share menu, which adds the option to send stories and magazines by SMS. So, if you're looking to boost that fledgeling curated magazine empire, hit the source to grab it.</p>

<p>The dubious ability to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/17/scent-generator-threatens-to-waft-odorama-into-the-21st-century/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">send odors</a> to your pals just became a distinct possibility thanks to the Scentee app and hardware from a company called ChatPerf. Seen in Japan, it works by letting you load a liquid refill into the device, which is then mixed and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/06/forget-smell-o-vision-usb-aroma-geur-lets-you-smell-the-radio/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">dispersed</a> into the air at the command of an included app. The company noted a few of the myriad possible uses, like sending a smell to a friend who also has the device, perking up a yoga session, helping you wake up or making a shoot 'em up video game more lively with the odor of, say, gunpowder. It's still a prototype, but the company hopes to bring it to market with a variety of different odors, and launch it for iPhone or Android devices. Meanwhile, you can sniff it out in the video after the break.</p>

<p>Sony's ratcheted up its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/29/sonys-xperia-tablet-z-up-for-pre-order/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">water-resistant</a> device tech a notch with the launch of the Xperia ZR, a new 4.6-inch, 720p Android smartphone that's waterproof to 1.5 meters (5 feet). Sony boasts that its new device will let you film your snorkeling adventures in full HD quality, with HDR in both video or 13-megapixel stills thanks to the Exmor RS image sensor -- there's also a dedicated camera button like the one on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xperiazl/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia ZL</a>. The handset packs a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, LTE, NFC, Sony's Walkman album and movie apps and a notable OptiContrast OLED screen with Bravia tech to reduce glare "even in bright sunlight." There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but as soon as we hear more, we'll try to prep you ahead of that next beach-bound holiday. Meanwhile, you can check the galleries, PR and video after the break for more.</p>

Believe it or not, the Grammy-winners have just released a free game for iOS and Android called <em>Say the Same Thing</em>, which actually has nothing to do with the group or its music. It lets you play with a friend or random partner as you try arrive at the same word, by each choosing a new word in common with your previous choices. We gave it a shot, and it's actually rather fun -- yours truly and random internet guy Jason H. each arrived at "Caddyshack" from "Bill Murray" and "movies" after four rounds. You can even play with one of the band members, though there was quite a queue when we tried -- see how they roll in the video after the break, or grab the app at the sources.</p>

<p>When it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/04/facebook-home-official-replaces-your-app-icons-with-social-info/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">first announced Home</a>, Facebook said that it would support the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/htc-one-camera-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HTC One</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy S 4</a> as soon as they arrived. But unless you were into <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/13/facebook-home-now-available-for-almost-any-android-device/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">sideloading</a>, any attempt to actually run it on either of those two handsets was greeted with a "not supported" message -- at least until now. Though the app version hasn't changed and there's no mention of support for new handsets, the HTC One now appears to be officially supported, and after bypassing a warning (see the image above), you can now download and run it <em>un</em>officially on the GS4 as well. That requires the main Facebook app to be up-to-date, however, and we noticed that Home (which has a tiny download size) leans on its much bigger brother for most of the heavy lifting -- updating Facebook actually changes features in the Home app.</p>

<p><em>Android Central</em> noted that it also worked in that way for other previously unsupported devices it tried, namely the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/10/sony-xperia-zl-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Xperia ZL</a> and HTC One X. However, we still couldn't even download the app on the Nexus 4 or LG Optimus G, although it worked just fine via a sideload -- producing the same warning and allowing us to "use home anyway." That jibes with what Facebook told us <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/facebook-home-app-dock-folders-buddy-list/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">yesterday</a> -- namely, that it would change permissions so that sideloaders would get all the updates and not be saddled forever with version 1.0.</p>

<p><em>Myriam Joire contributed to this report.</em></p>

<p>In case you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/apple-updates-final-cut-pro-x/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">haven't heard</a>, a chapter in the history of Adobe's venerated Photoshop (and other Creative Suite applications) has just snapped shut. That's because all future versions have been moved to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/creative+cloud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Creative Cloud</a> and renamed "CC," meaning that the only way to grab anything after CS6 will be to sign up for an internet-only subscription. Now, many of Adobe's customers for those apps (at least those who actually <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/piracy/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">pony up</a> for it) are pros who use it for paying gigs, and as Apple discovered with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/apple-updates-final-cut-pro-x/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Final Cut Pro X</a>, they're a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/apple-posts-final-cut-pro-x-faq-following-backlash-promises-mul/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">vocal bunch</a> when they see any threat to their livelihoods. You may not be sure whether to get angry and look for an alternative (good luck with that), or to just go with the flow and regard the whole thing as inevitable. Luckily, we've been using the Creative Cloud since it came out and Creative Suite before that, so our rundown after the break should help you make up your mind.</p>
