  • GameBoy Advance Phone caught in the wild (by the guy who built it)

Perhaps if there was some sort of Brundlefly-style gadget mix-up five years ago, the outcome would look like this: an HTC Hermes jammed inside a GameBoy Advance housing. This prototype, presented by Windows Phone Hacker, features some fun changes that make it feel more like your beloved handheld gaming console, and less like your dated Windows Mobile Pocket PC, including a startup GIF animation of the original GameBoy Advance boot screen, custom software that keeps the OS in landscape mode, and custom notifications and ringtones from the Mario games. Also included is PocketGBA emulator for playing GameBoy Advance ROMs on the phone itself. Of course, this is just the beginning of the project: we look forward to seeing a version where the buttons work! In the meantime, check out the thing in action after the break. [Thanks, Juan]

Are you the proud owner of an Cingular / AT&T 8525 or other variant of the HTC Hermes WM5 handset? If so, you will be glad to know that some regular users/experts on that particular device have managed to get the newer Windows Mobile 6 OS onboard for that oh-so-good-upgrade feeling we all know and love. The residents over at xda-developers have posted a near-final WM6 ROM for that sweet Hermes from a recent carrier leak, with these niceties: an anti-CID / SIM lock was hacked, a custom installer was made and even a few apps were pre-installed on the WM6 ROM that may be begging to live inside that Hermes you have in your hand or pocket. Get it quick, though, as rumor has it xda-developers will be pulling all ROM images down, like, this week.[Thanks, Aaron]

We've just spotted what purports to be the HTC Trinity, and while it's looking quite a bit different (and a bit less sleek) than the last time it surfaced, the specs are just as spiffing. The Windows Mobile 5.0 actually doesn't look too much different than HTC's Hermes, with the main addition of GPS and some reworked face buttons. There's 64MB of RAM, 128MB of ROM, a 2.8-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth, WiFi, EDGE, HSDPA and a microSD slot. Just like the Hermes there are VGA and 2.0 megapixel cameras, and the phone is similarly slim at 0.7-inches thick. No more info as to when this will be out, and we can't say we aren't disappointed about the fairly generic look, but there's always a chance (hope) this report is a bit off.[Thanks, Sean]

  • I-mate to release HTC Hermes as Jas Jam?

The HTC Hermes Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC phone -- the HTC Wizard's successor -- has already surfaced a few times, and T-Mobile has made their branded MDA Vario II version no secret, but we're happy to see it in a less carrier-dependant form in this supposed Jas Jam from i-mate. The peeps at i-mate have quite a thing for HTC handsets, so it wouldn't be much of a surprise for them to release a version, and all the specs look just the same (and beautiful) as before. There's Windows Mobile 5.0, the 300MHz processor, 2.1 megapixel camera, 2.8-inch screen, 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, and all those sweet GSM, GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11b/g radios. The Jas Jam was spotted on the On The Go Solutions online store for the price of $0.00 and with no indication of a release date or even i-mate branding, so we're not sure how indicative this is of when -- or if -- such a product will ship from i-mate, but things are looking good.[Via Mobility Site]
