Sony updates plethora of VAIO laptops in Japan

Ah, Spring. The season of vacations, beach attire and VAIO updates. We already heard that Sony was giving its VAIO P ~~netbook~~ a dose of Windows XP and an optional 256GB SSD, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, the Type T, Type Z, Type F and Type A are all getting makeovers, so we'll do our best to break 'em down right. The beastly A series will continue to be menacing, boasting an 18.4-inch 1080p panel, WiFi, a HDD / SSD hybrid system, 4GB of RAM, a Blu-ray drive and a GeForce 9600M GT. The F series rolls in with a 16.4-inch display, 4GB of memory, ATI's 256MB Mobility Radeon HD 3470, WiFi, a battery good for three hours and a Core 2 Duo P8700. The other guys are seeing far lighter touchups, but you can feel free to have a look at all of these Japan-bound units in the links below.

Sony P-series "netbook" unveiled, underwhelming

Loose lips sink ships, Sony -- not that you'd care. Apparently the company couldn't stand to wait any longer on that long netbook it had been teasing, so it's gone and leaked it out onto the sonystyle site. Apparently, the oddly shaped P-series device will sport an 8-inch, 1600 x 786 LED display, a 1.33GHz Intel CPU, a hard drive up to 60GB (or a 128GB SSD), and will run Vista Home Premium or Home Basic. There's not much else in the way of info, save for the fact that the laptop will be available in three colors (Crimson Red, Champagne Gold, and Black Silk). Not quite the heart-stopper we were hoping for, and knowing Sony, likely not real netbook-ily priced, but still an interesting entry to the ever-widening field of teensy computers. Now if only it ran Linux...

Update: In case it wasn't clear, that's not an image of the P series, but a TT -- obviously a placeholder for now.

NEC introduces 22-inch MultiSync P221W LCD monitor

NEC popped out a new 19- and 24-incher earlier this month, but evidently those two just weren't enough. Today, we're being formally introduced to the very first member of the all new MultiSync P Series, the 22-inch P221W. The monitor caters to professionals working in "color-critical environments" and includes a 1,680 x 1,050 native resolution, wide color gamut that achieves 96% coverage of AdobeRGB, internal 10-bit programmable lookup tables, S-PVA LCD technology, AmbiBright automatic brightness adjustment, a 16-millisecond response time, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness and a four-way ergonomic stand to boot. As with anything with "pro" attached to it, this here display won't run you cheap, but $636.90 isn't too bad for a color-savvy monitor and a 3-year warranty.

Gateway's 17-inch P-6831FX gaming laptop gets reviewed

Given that Gateway just pushed out a round of updates including the relatively ginormous P Series, we reckon it was only logical to expect a review shortly. To be frank, the P-6831FX critiqued over at HotHardware is far from being the most potent machine with a 17-inch panel, but unlike many of its luxurious competitors, this one is actually affordable. So, how much gaming joy can $1,349.99 bring you? Quite a bit when the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS and 3GB of RAM are included. Reviewers found gaming performance to be downright remarkable, though the 1.67GHz CPU did hamper it a bit in other areas. It should be noted that the unit now arrives with a slightly faster CPU among other minor extras, so if it was good then, we're guessing it's a runaway winner now.

Acer intros new P Series widescreen LCDs

While you can be forgiven for mistaking it for another company's monitor line, that image above is in fact one of Acer's new P Series displays, which come in 19, 20, 22, and 24-inch varieties. From the looks of it, there's nothing too remarkable here, with the 19-inch P191Wd boasting a 1440 x 900 resolution and 2,000:1 contrast ratio, and the 20-inch P201Wd and 22-inch P221Wd upping things to the standard 1680 x 1050 resolution and a slightly better 2,500:1 contrast ratio. On the top of the heap, the 24-inch P241Wd monitor packs a 1920 x 1200 resolution, a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, a 2 ms response time, and a 400 cd/m2 brightness rating (compared to 300 cd/m2 for the three other models). From the sound of it, all four should be making their way to retailers now (if they aren't there already), with prices ranging from $230 to $500.
