Unfazed by the still-lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy, near-record crowds descended upon the flagship Fifth Avenue Apple Store in Manhattan today, snapping up all of the white iPad minis on hand by 11:15 AM EDT and the last of the black models by 12:10 PM. Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White reported that all three models of the white iPad mini were gone in just over an hour, with the 16 GB and 64 GB white minis selling out in about 30 minutes. For the black models, 16 and 32 GB versions sold out by by 11:40 AM, with the last of the 64 GB iPad minis heading out the door at about 12:10 PM. Apple 2.0 editor Philip Elmer-DeWitt did a headcount at about 10 AM when the Fifth Avenue store officially opened for iPad mini sales and found 801 people in line. He says that only the iPhone 4 (1,300) and iPad 2 (1,190) have pulled in larger crowds. Elsewhere, we've heard reports that lines were moderate at other Apple Stores around the country. Iconfactory co-founder Ged Maheux tweeted a shot of a well-behaved line at the Greensboro, NC, Apple Store at Friendly Center (below). I visited the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colo., for a completely unrelated reason this morning at about 10 AM local time and saw no line, but a good crowd of people trying out the newest iPad. How were things at your local Apple Store? Was it a sellout, or a washout? Let us know in the comments. [via MacRumors]

$900 can buy a lot. With taxes added on, it can buy you a pretty nice iPad 2 -- provided you can find one. For iOS developer Hazem Sayed (pictured at right), $900 bought him the first place in the iPad 2 line at the 5th Avenue Apple Store in Manhattan and the perfect venue to tout his free AskLocal social / geolocation app. The person who was the "real" first in line, 20 year-old college student Amanda Foote, fully expected to sell her enviable place in line. When an app developer with a keen eye for publicity meets a college student who needs money, great things happen. Both Amanda and Hazem received their 15 minutes of fame, and Hazem was able to get the word out about AskLocal after being interviewed by Fortune, the Wall Street Journal and Business Insider, as well as other media outlets. Hazem is no stranger to TUAW; he's visited with us at the TUAW booth at Macworld Expo for several years, and we used AskLocal to invite readers to our meetup this year. The app is unique in that it allows users to communicate by location rather than by name, and Hazem noted that the app was being heavily used by people in line at several of the Apple Stores to communicate tips about line length, expected numbers of iPads and people cutting in line. As for Amanda, she wasn't interested in buying an iPad 2. Instead, she's using her $900 to "go see Lady GaGa in concert." [via Business Insider, The Wall Street Journal]

Here's an earworm for you; hip-hop group FattySpins recorded a love song to ladies and to all things Apple, and filmed the video (above) at the landmark Apple Store Fifth Avenue. The song manages to not only encompass a lot of Apple products in its lyrics, but also manages to poke some good fun at Microsoft. I mean, you've gotta love lyrics like:"I know how to treat you – this ain't a reboot I'll never find the need to Control ALT Delete you I see no reason to mess with these slobs Cause they're like Bill Gates... and I'm Steve Jobs"The Apple Store Love Song was written and produced by Ray William Johnson, the likable nebbish with the glasses in the video. There's no word on whether or not Apple is going to hire him to produce catchy viral raps for future ads.[via CrunchGear]

As the international date line swung around to the States and rain finally stopped in NY, a few hundred people lined up outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store today for Apple's new iPhone, with the those The iLife guys up front descending into the store at 7AM to the sound of applause from the cheery horde of Apple Store employees. It was a far sight from the mayhem of previous launches -- the whole line was able to be contained in the elevated portion to the right of the store, no sidewalk necessary -- but it was still a fairly impressive turnout for a spec-bumped phone and a rainy night. Stand by for video from the launch, and be sure to send in your own launch impressions.Update: Video is after the break!

  • iPhone 3G S line begins in NY, weather be damned

It's pretty gross in NY right now -- sure, you've seen rain before, but you've never really experienced it until you've seen the grit and determination of these city folk wandering around in a light downpour with their $500 umbrellas. That's why it comes as zero surprise to see that despite the ongoing drizzle, a few brave souls have gathered in front of Apple's flagship store to be among the first in the States to get an iPhone 3G S tomorrow morning. Sure, they could've pre-ordered for delivery and stayed dry, but what's the fun in that? So far it's four friends from The iLife blog keeping each other company, with plans to upgrade one of the crew's original iPhones (for that attractive full subsidy price). These guys also braved the mayhem of the iPhone 3G launch, and who knows if they'll wise up before the next one. By 7AM tomorrow they'll have spent 24 hours in the elements -- quite a lot of commitment for a phone, but hey, that video recording bit is pretty neat, and male bonding is forever. Meet these guys and their cloud-sent adversary on video after the break, and check out the read link for their ongoing liveblog of the launch -- naturally courtesy of some iPhone 3.0 tethering.
