So much for exclusivity, eh? Sprint is <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/30/verizons-blackberry-tour-coming-july-12th-pre-order-page-now-l/">staying toe-to-toe with Verizon</a> in the race to get the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/tour">BlackBerry Tour</a> to market, launching the consensus hottest RIM device to date on July 12 for $199.99 on contract after rebates. It's awfully refreshing to see an ominous statement like "later this summer" morph into "early summer" instead of slipping into the "dead of winter" as is all too often the case with hotly-anticipated phones, and we have a sneaking suspicion the Tour's gonna sell like a remastered Bonnie Tyler live album (that's a good thing, by the way). Who's in?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/sprint-matches-verizons-pace-launching-blackberry-tour-on-july/">Sprint matches Verizon's pace, launching BlackBerry Tour on July 12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 13:14:00 EST. If you're familiar with the emulation scene (and let's be honest, you <em>are</em> reading Engadget), then you know the name <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/zodttd">ZodTTD</a> -- the brain behind some of the best jailbroken emus for the iPhone, including variations on the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and most importantly... the TurboGrafx-16. Now the master-hacker has brought his goods to the Pre, cooking up a version of psx4all on the Palm device, with the aforementioned GBA and TG16 ports on the way! Interestingly, he reports that the performance on the Pre is actually better than that of the iPhone 3GS, and of course he's hacked access to the keyboard, allowing for (more) proper control of games. There are still kinks that are being worked out (sound emulation, screen scaling, etc.), but it looks like we can expect big things in the near future. We at Engadget know everyone will rest a bit easier tonight knowing that real gaming on the Pre is at hand. We'll hopefully be getting our hands on a version soon, but for now hit the read link for more info, and check out the full video after the break!<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/30/the-pre-gets-playstation-gaming-and-more-thanks-to-zodttd-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Pre gets PlayStation gaming and more thanks to ZodTTD (video)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/30/the-pre-gets-playstation-gaming-and-more-thanks-to-zodttd-video/">The Pre gets PlayStation gaming and more thanks to ZodTTD (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 21:48:00 EST. It's true, The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pirate%20bay">Pirate Bay</a> has agreed to being purchased by Global Gaming Factory (owner of a network of Internet cafes and gaming centers) for 60 million Swedish Krona or roughly $7.8 million. According to a press release, "GGF intends to launch new business models that allow compensation to the content providers and copyright owners." In a post on TPB's blog, the rogue file sharing site says that the project has been in the works for many years and should help evolve the site while trying to stay the same. Here's how they put it:<br /><blockquote>If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us.<br /></blockquote>We'll have to wait and see how this pans out but it certainly smacks of a Napster v2 like situation at first blush. Assuming of course the deal closes by August as anticipated.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: As a hint, perhaps, of what's to come, GGF also announced the purchase of <a href="http://www.peerialism.com/index.php/products">Peerialism</a>, a software company responsible for developing what GGF calls "P2P 2.0" file sharing technology. <br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.jokrsolutions.se/">JOKR Solutions</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://thepiratebay.org/blog">Read</a> -- The Pirate Bay blog post<br /><a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/global-gaming-factory-x-acquisitions-of-the-pirate-bay-and-new-file-sharing-technology-p2p-20">Read</a> -- Press Release<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Misc. We don't know exactly what's new yet, but Palm's released firmware version 1.0.4 for Pres on Sprint (not to say there are any other Pres out there at the moment, anyhow). Stay tuned for details.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Looks like the only changes here address security vulnerabilities -- and interestingly, Palm gives a shout-out to Townsend Ladd Harris (a Pre homebrewer no less) who helped find them. Cheers to that.<br /><br /><strong>Update 2:</strong> Sadly, Palm's plugged the hole that <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/23/homebrew-apps-come-to-the-palm-pre/">allowed homebrew apps</a> on the phone without a jailbreak, though software you've already installed on the phone will continue to work. The hole that's been plugged was admittedly dangerous to leave open (installing apps via a link in email), though rooting and installing otherwise remain unchanged as far as we know.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/29/palm-pre-gets-upgraded-to-1-0-4/">Palm Pre gets upgraded to 1.0.4 (update: homebrew installs via email dead for now)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 13:50:00 EST. The <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/ps3">PlayStation 3</a> has kept access to <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/hulu">Hulu</a> even without <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/playon">PlayOn</a> or other workaround while others were blocked -- with the exception of <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/28/hulu-desktop-app-puts-a-remote-control-friendly-face-on-for-macs/">its own remote friendly desktop software</a> -- thanks to its browser's Flash support, but this morning multiple users have reported the above message indicating "Unfortunately, this video is not available on your platform. We apologize for any inconvenience." Some odd glitch related to the recent 2.80 firmware update or other temporary problem, or is this the latest platform to <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/03/06/hulu-blocks-boxee-browser-entirely-gloves-get-ripped-halfway-of/">get the Boxee treatment</a> when trying to bring streaming video to TV screens? We've reached out to Hulu for an explanation but so far, haven't heard a response. Interestingly, the Hulu TOS was just updated as of June 26, and although we haven't found any PS3-specific passages, changing a browser's user-string to match the console reveals it is definitely being specifically blocked.<br /><br />[Thanks Sev, and to Tyler from <a href="http://formatwarcentral.com/">FormatWarCentral.com</a> for the picture]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/27/ps3-owners-get-boxeed-hulu-this-video-is-not-available-on-yo/">Hulu to PlayStation 3 browsers: "This video is not available on your platform"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 27 Jun 2009 06:59:00 EST. Is it cooler than Sprint's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Snap/">Snap</a>? That's for you to judge, but whatever the case, Verizon has now announced its own version of HTC's latest WinMo Standard handset. The so-called Ozone features WiFi, global roaming capability, VZ Navigator and visual voicemail support, a QWERTY keyboard (which feels great if it's anything like its cousin's), and a beefy 1500mAh battery that we're betting will keep this thing going all day and then some. The best part, though, might be the price: it'll be just $49.99 on contract after rebate when it launches online on June 29 and in stores on July 13.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/25/htc-ozone-comes-to-verizon-june-29-for-under-50/">HTC Ozone comes to Verizon June 29 for under $50</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:08:00 EST. It's not quite that simple, though: starting tomorrow, June 26, you'll be able to pre-order upgrades at much cheaper prices -- $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/05/best-buy-memo-explains-that-vista-doesnt-work-details-windows/">just as we'd heard</a> -- but pre-orders will be strictly limited in number and are expected to sell out quickly. Obviously we'd prefer it if final pricing was $49 and $99 for everyone, but it's not a bad start, especially since participating manufacturers will be offering cheap / free upgrades to 7 on new computers sold after tomorrow with Vista as well.<br /><br />Oh, and don't you worry about scoring a place in line, because we're here to help: <strong>later today we'll be giving away 100 codes that guarantee a pre-order spot at the discounted prices, and you'll be able to share the code with two friends</strong>. You'll have to act fast, though -- the codes will only be valid for 48 hours. Keep your eyes peeled for our recession antidote post around noon EST, and get your clicky-fingers ready.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Looks lke we've got our first participating manufacturer -- HP machines sold after tomorrow will receive <a href="http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2009/090625xa.html?mtxs=rss-corp-news">free upgrades to 7</a>, and we're hearing Sony will announce a similar offer soon. We'll be keeping a full list of announcements as the day goes on, check back later for more.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/25/windows-7-official-pricing-announced-limited-pre-orders-start-t/">Windows 7 official pricing announced, limited pre-orders start tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 09:01:00 EST. Chalk up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/23/samsung-declares-victory-over-sharp-in-lcd-patent-dispute/">another huge win</a> for Samsung in its <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/13/sharp-hits-samsung-with-another-lcd-patent-suit/">long-running</a> <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/08/07/sharp-slaps-samsung-with-lcd-patent-infringement-lawsuit/">patent dispute with Sharp</a>: the US International Trade Commission has just issued a ruling banning importation of Sharp LCD panels that infringe one of Samsung's viewing-angle patents. As you might imagine, the ban covers a wide swath of Sharp's consumer products, including the Aquos TV line, but it's not clear on how it'll affect other companies that use Sharp panels -- this ruling could potentially have a huge impact on the entire tech market. On the other hand, we'd bet that Sharp's lawyers are furiously putting together a request to have the ban delayed while an appeal is sorted out, so this is far from over -- in fact, we'd say the real fireworks are just beginning.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/sharp-lcd-panels-banned-from-us-import-until-further-notice/">Sharp LCD panels banned from US import until further notice</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 16:17:00 EST. As we prepare for HTC's official <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/23/htc-launching-new-android-phone-in-london-tomorrow-well-be-the/">launch event</a> today, we're starting to see some details appear on HTC's own website of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hero">much rumored Hero</a>. Through some URL trickery, we've managed to unearth several details that confirm the previous rumors. Hero includes the new HTC Sense widget-based interface that puts at-a-glance info right up front on the home screen where it belongs. A new Scenes profile feature lets you transform your phones focus from business to weekend mode. Viewing your contacts shows the usual data in addition to the interactions you've had through social networking status updates and photos from the likes of Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and Twitter. A dedicated search button searches the phone as well as services like Twitter. In fact, like Palm's Pre, the HTC Hero seems ready to fully integrate your local data with all your subscribed social media sites. The biggest deal here, however, might just be that HTC is touting this as the first Android device to <strong>support Flash out of the box.</strong><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span>Inside you'll find Qualcomm's MSM7200A proc running Android at 528MHz, 512MB/288MB ROM/RAM, 3.2-inch TFT-LCD with 320 x 480 pixel rez, 900/2100MHz HSPA and Quad-band GSM, trackball, GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, 3.5mm audio jack, G-sensor, compass, and 5 megapixel auto-focus cam with microSD expansion. It's all there baby. The White version of the device has an industry-first Teflon coating (right, just like your pans) to keep things clean and grime free. Multi-touch and anti-fingerprint coating too. Hero arrives in Europe in July with T-Mobile and Orange, Asia later in the summer, and North America even later in 2009. Stay tuned for a full hands-on, but for now, enjoy the press shots in the gallery below and the new <span style="font-weight: bold;">video after the break!</span><br /><strong><br />Other HTC Hero coverage</strong><br /><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/adobe-demos-flash-on-the-htc-hero/">Read</a> - Adobe demos Flash on the Hero<br /><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/htc-hero-hands-on/">Read</a> - Hero hands-on and impressions<br style="font-weight: bold;" /><br /><a href="http://www.htc.com/www/product/hero/overview.html">Read</a> - Product page<br /><a href="http://www.htc.com/www/press.aspx?id=103536&amp;lang=1033">Read</a> - Official PR<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-official-press-shots/">HTC Hero official press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-official-press-shots/2103563/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/htc-hero-press-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-official-press-shots/2103562/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/htc-hero-press-8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-official-press-shots/2103561/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/htc-hero-press-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-official-press-shots/2103560/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/htc-hero-press-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-official-press-shots/2103559/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/htc-hero-press-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/htc-hero-details-begin-leaking-from-htcs-own-website/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HTC Hero running Android and Sense UI leaks from HTC's own website (updated, official, video)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/htc-hero-details-begin-leaking-from-htcs-own-website/">HTC Hero running Android and Sense UI leaks from HTC's own website (updated, official, video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 08:17:00 EST. Just when you thought you were <a href="http:// http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/23/entelligence-netbooks-r-i-p/">safe from the netbook horde</a>, along comes HP's new Mini 5101 to tempt you with the same basic specs once again, but this time with a slick aluminum and magnesium chassis to appeal to the "mobile professional" or anyone else with a bit of class. In a crazy twist, HP has <em>finally</em> moved the mouse buttons below the trackpad (because only professionals like clicking), and has included other perks like a 7200 RPM hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel webcam, and options of either a WSVGA (1024 x 600) or "HD" (1366 x 768) 10.1-inch LED screen. There are also options for 80GB or 128GB SSD drives, four-cell or six-cell batteries, with the latter rated at an improbable eight hours of runtime, and of course WWAN. There's a start price of $449, but with some of these options we could see that shooting up pretty fast -- especially if you pick the optional USB-powered external disc drive, external speakers or port replicator. It's not cheap being cheap. The Mini 5101 goes on sale in July.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/">HP Mini 5101 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/2102733/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-pr-2sb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/2102732/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-pr-3sb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/2102731/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-pr-4sb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />We got a quick hands-on with the netbook, and were fairly impressed. The square chiclet keys are much easier to hunt down than Mini 1000-series flush keys, and the proper trackpad configuration is naturally a huge bonus. We'd much prefer multitouch scrolling to the side-scrolling action, of course, but at least it's an improvement. The overall build quality is near the top of any laptop or netbook we've played with in this price range -- it's not perfect, and there's some of that telltale keyboard flex, but it's a big improvement over its largely plastic competitors and predecessor.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/">HP Mini 5101 hands-on shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/2102723/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/2102714/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/2102724/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/2102722/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/2102708/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/hp-mini-5101-cleans-up-nice-shows-the-serious-side-of-netbooks/">HP Mini 5101 cleans up nice, shows the serious side of netbooks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 00:02:00 EST. It'd be difficult to term <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/hp-mini-5101-cleans-up-nice-shows-the-serious-side-of-netbooks/">HP's new Mini 5101 netbook</a> "exciting" but the new ProBook 4310s has promise -- or at least flexibility. Like its name suggests, the ProBook 4310s is for boring people who like to spend their days alternating between an Excel spreadsheet and Peggle, but the specs and looks hint at adventure. Basically, this 13.3-inch laptop can be whatever you'd like it to be, with a starting price of $799 and the whole gamut of options, from Celeron to Core 2 Duo, FreeDOS to Vista, DVD to Blu-ray, and integrated or discrete graphics (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 with 512MB of RAM and HyperMemory support). There's space for up to 8GB of RAM, EV-DO, ExpressCard 34, SD card, all sorts of hard drives -- if you can imagine a spec HP probably has an option for it inside this 1-inch thick, 4.34 pound shell. Even the screen is available in three different configurations -- it's nice to be reminded now and then that high design doesn't always have to kill choice. The 4310s will be available on July 20th.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/hp-probook-4310s-serves-up-a-cornucopia-of-options-for-the-confi/">HP ProBook 4310s serves up a cornucopia of options for the configuration junkie within</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 00:01:00 EST. High five, <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/tesla">Tesla</a> fans -- everyone's favorite incredibly controversial electric car company has just been granted $465m in loans from the Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program. The bulk of the money will go towards that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/02/tesla-cant-get-funding-postpones-plans-to-build-new-factory/">postponed Model S factory</a>, while the remaining $100m will be used to fund an electric powertrain manufacturing facility that will sell parts like motors and battery packs to other carmakers. Tesla wasn't the DOE's only big winner: Nissan received $1.6b (billion!) to build batteries and EVs in Tennessee and Ford received an undisclosed amount to build two upcoming electric cars, but since those companies have largely drama-free upper management that isn't <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/11/tesla-founder-sues-tesla-elon-musk/">constantly involved in lawsuits</a>, it feels a little more routine. Still, it's an exciting time -- let's hope all these tax dollars turn into affordable, convenient electric transportation sooner rather than later.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> A "congressional source" has told the AP that <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g6oX6lRgmi3TpK7RPDQSTaQWSYpgD990EGKG1">Ford's getting $5.9 billion</a>, so yeah, the Oval's still the big dog.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/23/tesla-gets-465-in-loans-from-the-doe-to-build-model-s-ev-power/">Read</a> - Tesla<br /> <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/22/ford-gets-first-doe-loan-nissan-and-tesla-expected-winners/">Read</a> - Ford<br /> <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/23/officially-official-nissan-gets-1-6b-doe-loan-to-build-evs-b/">Read</a> - Nissan<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/transportation/" rel="tag">Transportation</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/23/tesla-ford-nissan-all-receive-electric-car-development-loans-f/">Tesla, Ford, Nissan all receive electric car development loans from US government</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 14:13:00 EST. The good news is that T-Mobile USA has finally gotten around to announce its second <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/category/Android/">Android</a> handset, the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/myTouch3G/">myTouch 3G</a>; the bad news, though, is that you can't have it just yet. The carrier-customized version of the HTC <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Magic/">Magic</a> that has already shipped in parts of Europe, Asia, and Canada features a 3.2-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen, AWS 3G for use on T-Mobile's high-speed network paired with quadband EDGE for global roaming, WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Exchange support, and -- of course -- Android 1.5 with all the virtual keyboardin' you can handle. Better than the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/G1/">G1</a>? Other than the larger internal memory common to all Magics, that's strictly a matter of personal taste -- but don't worry, you'll have a while to sort it out, because T-Mobile won't even start taking preorders from current customers until July 8 for $199.99 on a two-year contract. Those orders will start shipping in late July, with full national availability following on in early August in your choice of black, white, or "merlot."<br />
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/22/t-mobile-mytouch-3g-announced-starts-shipping-late-july/">T-Mobile myTouch 3G announced, starts shipping late July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 00:01:00 EST. Looks like the first post-Pre-launch webOS update is now being pushed out -- Pre owners, get ready for 13MB of 1.0.3 awesome. We're getting a full list, but Palm just told us some of what's new includes better Exchange email support, faster Google calendar syncing, and a bunch of app improvements.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Palm's posted the full release notes <a href="http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/na/pre/p100eww/sprint/solutions/article/50607_en.html#103">here</a>.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/palm-webos-1-0-3-update-now-available/">Palm webOS 1.0.3 update now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 16:32:00 EST. So, you want to be a webOS developer, huh? That's great kid, we're excited for you, but there's a catch: Palm won't be handing out an actual SDK to most people until the end of Summer. In a post just published on the <em>Palm Developer Network Blog</em>, reps from the company say that although they've been cranking away on getting their full SDK in shipshape (the version given out to current devs is apparently pretty rough), they won't have anything for a broader audience anytime soon. In their words:<br /><br /><blockquote>With the Pre now in customers' hands and reports of webOS hacks in the news, we know that you are more anxious than ever to get access to the SDK and start developing for webOS.<br /><br />We've been working very hard on the SDK and are eager to open access on a wider scale, but the software and the developer services to support it just aren't ready yet.<br /></blockquote><br />This should come as a bit of a blow to developers hoping to get cracking on Pre software, and will unquestionably turn those who can't bear the wait towards the fully stocked iPhone or Android platforms. However, Palm <em>does</em> say that they'll be opening the program up a bit wider, stating in the post that they plan to crank the number of devs with the early SDK in their hands up from "hundreds to thousands" over the next few weeks. Apparently, that's part of process the company is beginning to ration out access, building to a full release.<br /><br />Another bit of puzzling wordsmithing in this post comes in the form of the company's stance on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/the-secret-to-palm-pre-dev-mode-lies-in-the-konami-code/">homebrew</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/webos-homebrew-community-says-hello-world-to-palm-pre/">DIY</a> "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/14/pre-gets-nes-emulation-in-linux-our-thumbs-are-in-for-a-world-o/">experiments</a>" (their words) which have come to light in the past couple of weeks. So says Palm:<br /><br /><blockquote>As on any popular platform, we recognize that some developers will experiment in ways that cross official boundaries, but we believe that our formal offerings - and community efforts built around those offerings - will provide the best experience for the vast majority of webOS developers and users.<br /></blockquote><br />So while it's not exactly a keep-off-the-grass statement, it certainly reads vaguely as to whether or not the company will lock out jailbreakers hoping to dive deeper into webOS. Further confusing the matter? Palm has just released the Linux source code used to compile the Pre's firmware, making the possibility of cooked / custom ROMs a very serious reality, and obviously opening the floor to a lot of said experimentation. Mixed messages? Yes. Our word to Palm right now? Put every effort into getting that SDK out, or you're at risk of quickly burning through all the good will you've just engendered.<br /><strong><br />Update: </strong>We've added some info above which reflects Palm's statement that it will be considerably widening its pool of developers over the next few weeks with access to the early SDK.<br /><br /><a href="http://pdnblog.palm.com/2009/06/an-update-on-the-early-access-program-and-the-sdk/">Read</a> - An update on the early access program and the SDK<br /><a href="http://opensource.palm.com/packages.html">Read</a> - Open source packages<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/palm-says-no-webos-sdk-till-end-of-summer/">Palm says no webOS SDK till end of Summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 15:26:00 EST. Are you one of the more than 4,000 people (86%) that answered our poll saying you thought <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/02/poll-have-you-been-impressed-by-bd-live/">BD-Live was a waste of time</a>, or didn't see any reason to give it a shot? We <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/11/sony-pictures-responds-to-your-poll-results-discusses-the-futur/">talked to Sony Pictures recently</a> and were promised that more useful reasons for hooking the internet to Blu-ray discs &amp; players were on the way, and today at a press event it showed why it thinks that will come true. Check out the gallery for a few pics of its new MovieIQ app, quickly described as a "wiki for movies" that can tie into your discs and provide information from Gracenote on demand on nearly anything in the movie or even specific scene being watched, from actors &amp; directors to background music. The first <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/bd-live/">BD-Live</a> discs with it should be available in September, we'll be back with more details shortly, for now just let the images do the talking.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Update</span>: Official press release is included after the break<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/">BD-Live MovieIQ</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/2093001/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-10-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/2093000/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-08-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/2092999/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-34-50-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/2092998/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-13-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/2092997/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-21-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/sony-pictures-to-smarten-up-blu-ray-with-movieiq-the-killer-ap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Pictures to smarten up Blu-ray with MovieIQ, the "killer app for BD-Live"</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/sony-pictures-to-smarten-up-blu-ray-with-movieiq-the-killer-ap/">Sony Pictures to smarten up Blu-ray with MovieIQ, the "killer app for BD-Live"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 19:22:00 EST. This one's been a <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/11/11/nokia-project-puts-red-boxes-on-things/">long time</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/16/enkin-digitized-signage-for-your-android-device/">coming</a> but it looks like Dutch company SPRXmobile has launched the world's first <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/augmented%20reality">Augmented Reality</a> browser. Layar, as it's called, runs on Android and aggregates the data from the cellphone's compass and GPS coordinates to understand where you're standing and what you're looking at. A "radar view" then applies a visual information layer on top of the camera display as you pan around your environment. Content partnerships including a local bank, social networking site, and a realty company allows Layar to identify houses for sale, nearby ATMs, and local clubs and bars all laid out visually on your cellphone's display. Layar will be available this month in The Netherlands via the Android Market for phones such as the G1 and HTC Magic. It will launch in the US, Germany, and the UK sometime later this year with the iPhone 3G S listed as a primary target platform. Looks great with plenty of data populated in the video sample (posted after the break) but we have to wonder how well it works in day-to-day reality.<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong>As pointed out by a number of readers, calling this a world's first is a bit of stretch considering apps like <a href="http://www.mobilizy.com/en/wikitude-ein-reisefuhrer">Wikitude</a> (a travel guide) and <a href="http://labs.lastminute.com/nru/">NRU</a>. When pressed, SPRXmobile said they are a world's first AR browser <em>platform</em>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/video-sprxmobiles-layar-is-worlds-first-augmented-reality-bro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: SPRXmobile's Layar is world's first Augmented Reality browser for cellphones</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/video-sprxmobiles-layar-is-worlds-first-augmented-reality-bro/">Video: SPRXmobile's Layar is world's first Augmented Reality browser for cellphones</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 08:55:00 EST. We knew that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/lg-to-produce-15-inch-oled-panel-this-summer/">LG's 15-inch OLED TV</a> was entering into production this summer, now we've got a ship date: December. This according to an interview with Won Kim, LG's VP of OLED sales and marketing. While 15-inches is small, it easily trumps the world's first production OLED TV, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xel-1">Sony's $2,500 11-inch XEL-1</a>, and is a reasonable size for the bedroom (if you must) or kitchen counter. No word on specs but we expect the production set to offer the same million:1 contrast, 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution, and 30,000-hour shelf life as the prototype unveiled in January. The TV will launch first in Korea for an undisclosed price that is bound to be punishingly expensive.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/lg-15-inch-oled-tv-on-sale-in-december/">LG 15-inch OLED TV on sale in December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 06:07:00 EST. It's official, Olympus' first MIcro Four Thirds camera is up and dancing upon the global stage. Dubbed, E-P1 "digital Pen" (reflecting the camera's Olympus Pen-series heritage) this MFT shooter aligns with the looks and specs that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/leaked-olympus-ep-1-micro-four-thirds-compact-has-us-hot-bother/">came our way yesterday</a> in leaked format. In other words, we're looking at an image stabilized (sensor-shift) 12.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor with TruePic V image processing, ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, a 3-inch LCD, 20 shooting modes (5 exposure, i-Auto, and 14 automatic scenes), an SDHC slot, and HDMI TV-out for playback of 720p (1280x720 pixel) recorded video at 30fps. The 14-42 lens kit retracts into the barrel when not in use and Olympus' Supersonic Wave Filter helps keep dust under control when swapping-out the lens for Micro Four Thirds, Four Thirds, or OM lenses. A few advanced previews of the E-P1 are already available -- peep those in the read links below if you can't wait for the July launch or the full-blown reviews due in a few weeks. <br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Priced at $749 (body only), $799 (with 14-42mm lens), and $899 (with 17mm pancake lens and viewfinder). Honestly, those prices are better than we had hoped for especially in a camera measuring just 121 x 70 x 36-mm (4.7 x 2.7 x 1.4-inches) playing host to a DSLR-sized sensor.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/">Olympus E-P1 'digital pen' gets official, so does our lust</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/2086032/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus0e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/2086027/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus10e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/2086033/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus11e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/2086028/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus12e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/2086025/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus13e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><a href="http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/22386/olympus-e-p1-review/">Read</a> -- LetsGoDigital<br /><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/previews/olympusep1/">Read</a> -- DPReview<br /><a href="http://www.photographyblog.com/articles/olympus_e-p1_photos/">Read</a> -- Photography Blog<br /><a href="http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1461&amp;cid=em_e-p1opr_09_06&amp;li=im#/sample-video">Read</a> -- Official E-P1 product page<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/">Olympus E-P1 'digital Pen' gets official, so does our lust</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 01:27:00 EST. New BlackBerry models are few and far between -- particularly of the CDMA variety -- so when one is announced, the usual carrier suspects typically fall in line within a few weeks of each other and announce their branded versions in rapid succession. This one was particularly tight, though: Sprint has announced its plans for carrying the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Tour/">Tour</a> 9630 <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/15/verizon-launches-blackberry-tour-teaser-page/">just minutes after Verizon</a>. It'll launch "later this summer" for $199.99 after $150 worth of rebates and a two-year contract, which makes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre/">Pre</a> comparison virtually inevitable. Although not exactly the best kept secret (we first caught wind <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/09/samsungs-omnia-ii-gt-i8000-leaks-early/">last week</a>), Samsung's Verizon-bound Omnia II / I8000 is now one hundred percent official, along with <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/15/samsung-omnia-pro-b7610-slider-gets-official-reveal/">even more official US confirmations</a> for the Omnia Pro B760 (Louvre) slider, Omnia Pro B7320 candybar, and the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/19/samsung-b7300-pictured-excites-only-the-most-rabid-winmo-fans/">Omnia Lite B7300</a>. Specs for the Omnia II are just a little different than what we previously heard: 3.7-inch AMOLED resistive touchscreen with WVGA (480 x 800) resolution, 7.2Mbps HSPA (or EV-DO Rev. A for Verizon's version), 5 megapixel camera, 720 x 480 at 30fps video recording, 2GB to 16GB internal storage with microSD expansion slot, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, AGPS, and TouchWiz 2.0 UI. As for the Lite, we're looking at HSDPA, WiFi, 3 megapixel camera, AGPS, and just as the name suggests, a good likelihood it'll be overshadowed by its more feature-rich brother. <br /> <br /> <strong>Update:</strong> We can't say it's unexpected, but just to be clear, Omnia II buyers shouldn't worry about living in the past.<em><a href="http://tech.yahoo.com/news/zd/20090615/tc_zd/241388"> Yahoo! Tech</a></em> reports its WinMo 6.1 underbelly will be later upgradeable to 6.5.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/samsung-omnia-ii-now-official-amoled-touchscreen-with-touchwiz/">Samsung Omnia II now official: AMOLED touchscreen with TouchWiz 2.0 destined for Verizon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 12:05:00 EST. Samsung's busy launching a bunch of handsets across even more timezones right now, and in addition to all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/samsung-omnia-pro-b7610-slider-gets-official-reveal/">Omnia updates</a>, there's also the Jet, which is an interesting hybrid: it's got an 800MHz processor, five megapixel camera, 3.1-inch AMOLED screen, WebKit-based Dolfin browser and a host of media features including DivX support, but it's running TouchWiz 2.0, so it's not a proper smartphone. Yeah, it's weird, but we're sort of into it -- we'll see what's it's like in person.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/samsung-jet-packs-an-800mhz-processor-amoled-display-featureph/">Samsung Jet packs an 800MHz processor, AMOLED display, featurephone OS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 11:56:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/iphoneos3.0">iPhone OS 3.0</a> may not be available to the masses for a couple days yet, but that's not stopping Tapulous (nor Apple's App Store overlords, apparently) from rolling out a new version of its ridiculously popular Tap Tap Revenge that's fully ready to take advantage of <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/pushnotifications/">push notifications</a> right here and right now. We've taken the new build for a spin, and in brief, it works as designed -- notification times ranged from near instantaneous to just under a minute. One of our editors here was testing on a cellular connection and the other was on a SIM-less iPhone 3G running just WiFi, so it looks like this setup will work pretty seamlessly regardless of what kind of connection you happen to be enjoying / tolerating / loathing at the moment. Follow the break for a quick video demo.<br /><br />[Thanks, Brandon]<br />
<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/push-notifications-go-live-on-iphone-courtesy-of-tap-tap-revenge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Push notifications go live on iPhone courtesy of Tap Tap Revenge</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/push-notifications-go-live-on-iphone-courtesy-of-tap-tap-revenge/">Push notifications go live on iPhone courtesy of Tap Tap Revenge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 02:01:00 EST. You'd think that Nokia would want to do a better job of building up such important product announcements with a long, drawn-out series of frustratingly unhelpful teasers, viral videos, and global PR campaigns, but instead, it turns out that the rumored <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/E72/">E72</a> and <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/27/rumored-nokia-5900-xpressmusic-is-actually-a-lower-end-5530/">5530 XpressMusic</a> have been officially unveiled at the company's Connection 09 event in Singapore. The E72 is arguably the bigger announcement of the two, succeeding the E71 by adding a whopping 5 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack (thank goodness), integrated compass, 10.2Mbps HSDPA, and an optical navigation pad; it'll hit in the third quarter for &euro;350 (about $489). Follow the break for video of the E72 in slick, polished, high-orchestrated marketing action. Next up, as we'd heard, the 5530 ends up being a small step down from the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/5800/">5800</a> in the S60 5th Edition totem pole, offering just EDGE data without any form of 3G (though you've still got WiFi). It's got a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, 3.5mm jack, and a 640 x 360 touchscreen display. Like the E72 it'll be available in the third quarter; it'll retail for &euro;199 (about $278) unlocked.<br /><br />[Thanks, nabs]<br />
<br />
<br /><br /><a href="http://conversations.nokia.com/2009/06/15/nokia-e72-unveiled-pics-and-video/">Read</a> - Nokia E72<br /><a href="http://conversations.nokia.com/2009/06/15/pass-the-parcel-presents-the-nokia-5530-xpressmusic/">Read</a> - Nokia 5530 XpressMusic<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/14/nokia-e72-5530-xpressmusic-get-official/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia E72, 5530 XpressMusic get official</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/14/nokia-e72-5530-xpressmusic-get-official/">Nokia E72, 5530 XpressMusic get official</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 14 Jun 2009 23:18:00 EST. You sort of knew this was coming after he shepherded the Pre to launch, but Palm just announced that Jon Rubinstein is taking over as CEO, replacing Ed Colligan after sixteen years in the top spot. After a short break, Colligan will join the very vocal <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/rogermcnamee">Roger McNamee</a> at major Palm investor Elevation Partners, so he won't be totally out of the loop, but the shuffle is still somewhat unexpected -- and the Palm / Apple bloodlines just got even deeper with the Rubinstein, the ex-head of the iPod and Mac divisions, now totally in charge.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=15318&amp;news=Palm+Jon+Rubinstein+Ed+Colligan">Brighthand</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/jon-rubinstein-takes-over-as-palm-ceo/">Jon Rubinstein takes over as Palm CEO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 17:34:00 EST. It's begun. Although lacking a general release of the SDK, the first homebrew apps have emerged thanks to last night's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/09/palms-webos-root-image-leaks-out-code-enthusiasts-reschedule-t/">leaked WebOS root image</a>. The first application puts a stake in the ground by displaying a simple "hello world" on the screen. Unfortunately, the code overwrote the pre-installed Sprint Nascar application... oh wait, that's probably a good thing. Devs have also started tampering with existing code to disable the shutter sound on the camera while leaving the rest of the sounds enabled. Now why would somebody want to do that?<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: New image from an excited developer that shows <span style="font-style: italic;"></span>scm6079's work over at <span style="font-style: italic;">PreCentral </span>evolving with a 5-second photo timer and more. We're being told that several members of the Pre hacking team consist of old-school PalmOS hackers from the Samsung i300 days. Now if Palm can just lure back the rest of its developers smitten by Android and the lure of App Store riches then they might just make something of this fledgling smartphone platform.<br /><br />[Thanks, Scott M. and C.J.]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/webos-homebrew-community-says-hello-world-to-palm-pre/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WebOS homebrewers say 'Hello World!' to Palm Pre</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/webos-homebrew-community-says-hello-world-to-palm-pre/">WebOS homebrewers say 'Hello World!' to Palm Pre</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 05:43:00 EST. Sorry, <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/08/nokia-n97-pre-order-falls-to-524-25-in-the-us/">preorderers</a> -- you've once again gotten gamed by the quick-draw Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago who've received stock of the black version of the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/N97/">N97</a> today. You can't buy the units just yet, but they'll be available tomorrow morning -- the only catch is that there are established waitlists at both locations, so you might have to wait for those folks to burn through stock before you get your own. It's been known since day one that iPhone OS 3.0 would support data tethering, and Apple took the opportunity <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/phil-schiller-keynote-live-from-wwdc-2009/">at WWDC today</a> to drive the point home by saying that it'd be launching the service with 22 carrier partners in 44 countries. Of course, it's easy to have assumed that AT&amp;T wouldn't be one of those partners, but we've been told today by a company spokesman that it will be offering tethering on the device -- it just doesn't have any announcements to make at this time. Whether that means availability will be delayed (perhaps until <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/27/atandt-announces-7-2mbps-hspa-rollout-plans/">the 7.2Mbps upgrade</a> is built out) or they're just trying to hammer out pricing, we don't know, but it's a promising sign.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/atandt-well-offer-tethering-on-the-iphone/">AT&amp;T: we'll offer tethering on the iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 17:24:00 EST. Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it's much, much faster -- some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance -- and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features. You're also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. There are some surprises, too -- holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple's touting a new "fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating." New and end-of-contract pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB when it goes on sale June 19th Stateside and in 80 more countries in August -- and the current 8GB 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately. You'll have to pay a bit more if you're mid-contract, though -- $299 for the 3G and $399/$499 for the 3G S.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-3g-s-press-shots/">iPhone 3G S press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-3g-s-press-shots/2068679/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-pr-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-3g-s-press-shots/2068678/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-pr-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-3g-s-press-shots/2068677/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-pr-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-3g-s-press-shots/2068676/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-pr-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-3g-s-press-shots/2068675/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-pr-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-shows-iphone-3gs-at-wwdc/">Apple shows iPhone 3GS at WWDC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-shows-iphone-3gs-at-wwdc/2068402/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-key-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-shows-iphone-3gs-at-wwdc/2068401/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-key-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-shows-iphone-3gs-at-wwdc/2068400/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-key-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-shows-iphone-3gs-at-wwdc/2068399/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-key-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-shows-iphone-3gs-at-wwdc/2068398/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3gs-key-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><strong>Other iPhone news from WWDC:</strong><br /><a title="View Apple shows iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, hits devices June 17th on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apple-shows-iphone-os-3-0-at-wwdc/">Apple shows iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, hits devices June 17th</a><br /><a title="View Apple's 8GB iPhone 3G falls to $99 on contract on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apples-iphone-3g-drops-to-99/">Apple's 8GB iPhone 3G falls to $99 on contract</a><br /><a engadget="" on="" iphone="" to="" navigation="" real="" title="View Apple partners with TomTom to bring " href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone/">Apple partners with TomTom to bring "real" navigation to iPhone</a><br /><a engadget="" on="" service="" phone-locating="" iphone="" my="" find="" title="View Apple announces " href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apple-announces-find-my-iphone-phone-locating-service/">Apple announces "Find My iPhone" phone-locating service</a><br /><a title="View Line 6 and Planet Waves brings guitar and amp control to iPhone on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/line-6-and-planet-waves-brings-guitar-and-amp-control-to-iphone/">Line 6 and Planet Waves brings guitar and amp control to iPhone</a><br /><a title="View ScrollMotion's Iceberg in-app bookstore announced for iPhone, ready to take on the Kindle? How's about an 8GB <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPhone3G/">iPhone 3G</a> for $99 on a new 2-year AT&amp;T contract? That's exactly what was just announced at WWDC 2009, and yes, this new price is effective <strong>today</strong>. We're guessing any remaining 16GB iPhone 3G units will be scrounged up at closeout rates as well. Oh, and if you're mid-contract on AT&amp;T (with any phone), you'll be asked to <a target="_blank" href="https://buyiphone.apple.com/WebObjects/IPACustomer.woa/23/wo/1t7wZZBRb4vAbe83gp3e3w/6.WOMetaRefresh">shell out</a> a whopping $299 for one of these 8GB units or $399 / $499 for the 16GB / 32GB iPhone 3G S. Frankly, that upgrade deal reeks compared to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/01/atandt-announces-iphone-3g-pricing-plans/">the offer</a> that was passed along to those who upgraded from the iPhone to iPhone 3G (mid-contract users paid the same as new / renewing contract users), but then again, the original iPhone was only sold in unsubsidized (and thus, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-apple-iphone/">crazy expensive</a>) form.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&amp;cdvn=news&amp;newsarticleid=26853">Read</a> - AT&amp;T press release<br /><a href="https://buyiphone.apple.com/WebObjects/IPACustomer.woa/23/wo/1t7wZZBRb4vAbe83gp3e3w/6.WOMetaRefresh">Read</a> - Apple pre-order page<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-8gb-iphone-3g-falls-to-99-on-contract/">Apple's 8GB iPhone 3G falls to $99 on contract</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-8gb-iphone-3g-falls-to-99-on-contract/2068779/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-3g-8gb-wwdc_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-8gb-iphone-3g-falls-to-99-on-contract/2068650/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/apple-iphone-3g-wwdc-09_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-8gb-iphone-3g-falls-to-99-on-contract/2068649/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/apple-iphone-3g-wwdc-09_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-8gb-iphone-3g-falls-to-99-on-contract/2068648/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-wwdc-2009-pricing-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apples-iphone-3g-drops-to-99/">Apple's 8GB iPhone 3G falls to $99 on contract</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 13:48:00 EST. <ul>
    <li>Users will now be able to <strong>rent and purchase movies</strong> from the phone, along with audiobooks.</li>
    <li><strong>MMS</strong> will be available from 29 carriers at launch, with AT&amp;T lagging behind into the summer.</li>
    <li><strong>Tethering</strong> over Bluetooth and USB for Macs and PCs is also enabled, with 22 carriers announcing support, but AT&amp;T wasn't mentioned among them -- we're not holding our breath.</li>
    <li>New and improved <strong>Safari</strong> does JavaScript 3X faster, and supports QuickTime X-style HTTP streaming of audio and video. There's also AutoFill for forms, and improved HTML 5 support including audio and video tags.</li>
    <li><strong>Find My iPhone</strong> tracks down your phone using MobileMe from any browser. It locates the phone on a map, and also allows you to remote wipe the device, or even play a sound on the phone for locating it around the house -- even when it's on vibrate.</li>
    <li>New dev features have been detailed at length, but they're still around. Features include in-app purchases (but only for apps that were paid to start out with), Bluetooth and dock connector communication with other devices, including other iPhones. Embedded Google Maps in third party apps, including turn by turn apps. Push notifications of text alerts, number badges and sound alerts.</li>
</ul>
The new OS will be pushed to devices on June 17th, and iPod touch users get to pay $9.95 for the privilege. Developers get to play with the gold master today.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apple-shows-iphone-os-3-0-at-wwdc/">Apple shows iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, hits devices June 17th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 12:40:00 EST. <div align="left">This one sure <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/06/09/tomtom-already-has-iphone-navigation-software-ready-to-roll/">took awhile</a> to go from <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/06/11/iphone-sdk-agreement-forbids-real-time-route-guidance-dancing/">rumor</a> to <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/06/13/tomtom-speaks-up-about-iphone-situation/">real</a>, but at long last, authentic <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TomTom/">TomTom</a> navigation has arrived on the iPhone. 'Course, we would've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/12/tomtom-go-740-live-impressions/">personally preferred</a> the Garmin touch, but at this point, we can't really find it in our hearts to kvetch. The app shown at WWDC today was surprisingly slick, and while the robot voice didn't exactly get our juices flowing, the currently unpriced TomTom car kit is definitely a boon for those looking to avoid standalone PNDs. Apple has informed us that the application will surface "this summer," though it didn't mention a price; in other words, we can't imagine this being cheap. You think TomTom wants a $19 app undercutting its $300 navigation systems? Doubtful. Video of the new setup is after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-4/">Apple / TomTom official navigation shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-4/2068846/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-wwdc09-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-4/2068845/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-wwdc09-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-4/2068844/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-wwdc09-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-4/2068843/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-wwdc09-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-4/2068842/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-wwdc09-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-3/">Apple partners with TomTom to bring "real" navigation to iPhone</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-3/2068754/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-iphone-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-3/2068753/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-iphone-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-3/2068752/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-iphone-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-partners-with-tomtom-to-bring-real-navigation-to-iphone-3/2068751/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/iphone-tomtom-iphone_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /></div>

After showing off Mac OS X 10.6 "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SnowLeopard/">Snow Leopard</a>" at last year's WWDC, Apple is finally ready to ship it out the door this coming September, for a quite reasonable upgrade fee of $29 for Leopard users (as opposed to the regular $129 for larger refreshes). Folks who buy a Leopard machine between now and December can get the upgrade for $10 in shipping. While the added feature list is relatively slim, and there are few surprises between what was confirmed last year and the various leaks from developer previews, Apple's still giving users and developers some fun new tech to play with -- particularly the GPU-exploiting OpenCL, and the Grand Central Dispatch tech for developers to ease application optimization for multi-core processors. Pretty nerdy stuff, but if it makes our Dashboard Sudoku Widgets run faster, we can hardly complain. Other updates to the OS Apple is trotting out at WWDC:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Apple rewrote the <strong>Finder</strong>, while keeping it mostly the same on the surface, for a bunch of "little benefits." Tweaks include faster Quick Look previews and Spotlight searches.<br /></li>
    <li>There's built-in <strong>Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 support</strong> in the OS, including Mail, Calendar and Address Book syncing.<br /></li>
    <li><strong>QuickTime X</strong> has a new "modern foundation," HTTP streaming and a whole new look. Users can record and trim video, and upload to sharing sites like MobileMe and YouTube.<br /></li>
    <li>Snow Leopard has half the footprint of Leopard, amounting to 6GB in savings and 45% faster installs.</li>
    <li>New trackpads can handle <strong>handwriting recognition</strong> now, and there's new text selection "AI." There's also support for wireless Braille accessories (pictured).<br /></li>
    <li><strong>Safari 4</strong> is available for Windows, Leopard and Tiger, but Snow Leopard adds "Crash Resistance," which keeps browser and tabs intact even if a plugin crashes -- user just refreshes the page. 64-bit version does JavaScript 50% faster.</li>
    <li>All core apps are <strong>64-bit</strong>, and performance improvements abound. Mail boasts 85% faster message loads and 90% faster loads, while Time Machine has a 50% faster initial backup time.</li>
</ul>
<strong>Update:</strong> More Snow Leopard additions and refinements are <a href="http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/enhancements-refinements.html">detailed here</a>. Highlights we've spotted so far include Text Expander-style capabilities in Text Edit and Mail, and three finger and four finger multitouch gesture support for older (pre unibody) MacBooks! <div align="left">Among the torrent of news is the announcement that Safari 4 ships today, boasting "unparalleled speed," especially when compared to IE8 (this is Apple talking, not us). Included in the new browser is a full history search, featuring a cover flow view of the user's browsing history (as well as a full spotlight search). And it looks like they've thought a lot about the browser when building the new OS -- In Snow Leopard, Safari runs as a 64-bit application, "boosting performance by up to 50 percent." Also in SL, Safari plug-ins run as separate processes. When a plug-in crashes, the browser remains intact, meaning you can just reload the page, not the browser itself. Available today (as in, <a href="http://www.apple.com/safari/download/">right now</a>) for Leopard, Tiger, and -- of course -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/apple-digs-into-microsoft-at-wwdc/">Windows</a>.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/safari-4-press-shots/">Safari 4 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/safari-4-press-shots/2068717/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/090608-safari4-g03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/safari-4-press-shots/2068716/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/090608-safari4-g02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/safari-4-press-shots/2068715/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/090608-safari4-g01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/safari-4-press-shots/2068718/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/090608-safari4-g04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /></div>

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Apple/">Apple</a> just let loose a new 15-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MacBookPro/">MacBook Pro</a> at WWDC 2009, with what appears to be the same built-in, non-removable battery (or, non-user serviceable, if we're being proper) as in the current unibody 17-incher. Phil asserts that the cell will last the average user around five years (1,000 recharges), and could last around seven hours under ideal conditions. There's also an SD card reader rather than an ExpressCard slot (seriously Apple -- <em>replaced?</em> -- why not just add it like every other Wintel laptop available today?). Oh, and the starting tag just dropped to $1,699.<br />
<ul>
    <li>Starting at $1,699 (down from $1,999 in prior lineups)<br /></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">$1,699</span>: 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce 9400M graphics, 250GB HDD, SD card slot, no ExpressCard<br /></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">$1,999</span>: 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT graphics, 320GB HDD, SD card slot, no ExpressCard</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">$2,299</span>: 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT graphics, 500GB HDD, SD card slot, no ExpressCard</li>
    <li>17-inch unibody MacBook Pro remains the same specs-wise (it's the only Apple laptop left with an ExpressCard slot), but it's getting a price cut to $2,499.</li>
    <li>Shipping today</li>
</ul>
Not enough for you? The 13-inch unibody MacBook has been beefed up and revised, and it's now part of the MacBook Pro line as well. Yep, all the aluminum machines are now Pros, with the same built-in battery promising seven hours of life. The littlest Pro also gets the SD card slot, a FireWire 800 port, up to 8GB of RAM, upwards of 500GB of storage and a backlit keyboard as standard. You just <span style="font-style: italic;">knew</span> Apple couldn't let its remaining white MacBook <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/03/updated-white-macbook-gets-benchmarked-outperforms-unibody-coun/">outperform its more expensive unibody</a> for long, right? It'll be available (today, we expect) in two configurations.

Wilder still? A new MacBook Air, which starts at $1,499 (while the SSD unit gets going at $1,799). Yeah, that's $700 less than before.

It's no big secret that T-Mobile was going to get a version of the HTC Magic at some point, but this box art confirms a couple very important things for us. First, it's going to be called the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/myTouch3G/">myTouch 3G</a> -- not the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Magic/">Magic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Sapphire/">Sapphire</a>, or <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/G2/">G2</a> -- and the imagery conjured on the packaging is a good deal more exciting than that found on the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/G1/">G1</a>. Second, it'll be available in three colors, just like its older, QWERTY-equipped brother -- but unlike the G1, the wildcard third color will be a dark red marketed as "merlot." Of course, white and black will also be available, and we've got the proofs for all three in the gallery below, so have a look while you wait for launch; our documents here say that T-Mobile expects to bring this sucker into retail stores on August 5 -- but given the carrier's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/02/t-mobile-usa-next-android-set-coming-early-summer/">"early summer" statement</a> for its next Android device, we're cautiously optimistic that date has been pushed up.<br /><br />[Thanks, anonymous tipster]<br />
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/t-mobile-mytouch-3g-box-art-comes-out-to-play/">T-Mobile myTouch 3G box art comes out to play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 23:18:00 EST. It <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/02/24/lgs-g910-watchphone-to-cost-1-000/">won't be the cheapest way</a> to get in on 7.2Mbps HSDPA, but it might be the coolest way -- or at the very least, the geekiest -- when LG finally begins shipping out its <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/GD910/">GD910</a> watch phone starting next month. Sales will kick off in Europe on <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/category/Orange/">Orange</a>, followed by Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and Latin America, so odds are good that this thing will be available in a neighborhood near you over the next few weeks. Practical, it's not -- but video calling through a wristwatch is pretty much every little boy's dream, so we're going to cut this phone a <em>whole</em> lot of slack.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-18231-LG+to+launch+its+3G+Watch+phone+this+July!.html">Akihabara News</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/lg-gd910-to-start-shipping-in-july/">LG GD910 to start shipping in July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 03:21:00 EST. See that? All 43-inches of this curved NEC monitor with 2880x900 pixel resolution can be yours in July. Ok, it'll cost you $7,999 but it's, well, it's curved! The CRV43, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/nec-has-their-own-2880x900-curved-gaming-display/">first spotted at CES</a> in January 2008 and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/video-nec-crvd-display-hands-on/">again on video in 2009</a> (where it was expected to cost $6,499), measures in with a 200 nits brightness rating, 10,000:1 contrast, 0.02ms "Rapid Response," covers 99.3% of the Adobe RGB color gamut, and packs at least one USB2.0 jack and DVI-D and HDMI 1.3 connectors. Unfortunately, gaming is not listed amongst its targeted uses so you'll be on your own to find a release supporting the CRV43's 32:10 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, there's some junk in that trunk so deftly hidden by the glamor shot above. See what we mean after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/nec-crv43-43-inches-of-curve-on-sale-july/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NEC CRV43: 43-inches of curve on sale July</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/nec-crv43-43-inches-of-curve-on-sale-july/">NEC CRV43: 43-inches of curve on sale July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 01:53:00 EST. That pretty much means we're back in stasis with this one, with even more delay to come if the appeal is granted. That's cool, we needed a nap anyway.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/03/dish-echostar-dvr-injunction-temporarily-put-on-hold-by-court/">DISH / EchoStar DVR injunction temporarily put on hold by court</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Jun 2009 19:45:00 EST.
