Hands-on with HD video podcasts on an HD TiVo

Hands-on with HD video podcasts on an HD TiVo
There's no question that the we love TiVo around here, but that doesn't mean we're afraid to point out its faults. Currently one of our biggest gripes is that TiVo doesn't always get HD and this isn't anymore true than with the TiVoCast feature. Thankfully that is about to change as TiVo Desktop 2.6 (Windows only, due in March '08) finally fills the missing pieces to make getting HD on your HD TiVo, drop dead simple. This update will work with any podcatcher software you have, -- you know like iTunes Miro -- all you have to do is point TiVo Desktop to the directory where your HD content is downloaded and it will parse all the sub folders and create corresponding folders on your Now Playing List. And just about every video codec and resolution under the sun can be transcoded before it is automatically transferred to your TiVo -- no word on what happens to AC3 audio, but we'd guess it gets converted to 2-channel. If this is all too complicated for you -- which we doubt -- you can also browse select podcasts just like you can Amazon UnBox content.

Logitech's Wireless DJ Music System reviewed

While the portable (and semi-portable) boombox market has grown out of control, the sound quality you receive from these mini systems can't exactly match up with the larger, more powerful, and more robust sound systems more suited for home theaters or living rooms. Although a dedicated HTPC can pipe digital audio directly into a receiver without too much fuss, the rest of us need a clean, wireless solution to that dilemma. Enter Logitech's Wireless DJ Music System, a remote-controlled, Bluetooth-based system that BlueTomorrow praises as "simple to install," easy to use, and as intuitive as anyone could hope for. Reviewers were stunned at the sleekness and stylishness of the black / silver remote, and found that the button layout, LCD screen, and overall functionality were all "top notch." Additionally, they found the system incredibly simple to set up, claiming that wireless connections were set and ready to rock "within seconds." While piping audio from internet radio streams, iTunes / MusicMatch playlists, and using the included StreamPoint software, the crew declared its operations seamless from 100 feet away. The only digs came from the inability to search from the remote, no loop scrolling, and the apparent inoperability with Macs. Overall, however, the system was deemed a glorious success, and was said to be an excellent value for those looking to channel their audio to that svelte home stereo for just $250.

iTunes 7 turning out to have major glitches

When we were deep inside Maestro Jobs' reality distortion field on Tuesday, all these new additions to iTunes 7 seemed like significant improvements over its previous version. But not quite 48 hours later, all is not quiet on the iTunes front. Specifically, users on Apple's web forums and our own tipsters are reporting that some new nanos aren't being recognized in Windows iTunes 7, music being played through iTunes 7 sounds "scratchy" at times, CoverFlow doesn't always entirely download properly, and there are allegations that iTunes 7 has become, slow, bloated, and a resource hog. Some of us here at Engadget who have installed iTunes 7 haven't noticed any bad playback or other slowdowns, but have been dissappointed that very few of the albums on our machines have successfully downloaded album art. Furthermore, The Sydney Morning Herald called iTunes 7 a "lemon" yesterday and went on to report that: "Both Mac and PC users appear to be affected by the glitches being reported, and numerous different threads on the Apple discussion forum have described a range of technical issues." Oh, and did we mention that many professionally produced podcasts -- including CNET's Buzz Oud Loud, Popular Mechanics, and our own -- are reportedly not working. If Apple doesn't do something about this pretty soon, people might start calling it iCan't -- as in: "I can't play my music anymore."
