IDC: iPhone becomes top-selling cellphone in Japan over the Fall quarter, gives Sharp a run for its money
Think the iPhone is popular in the States? Well, the device is taking off in Asia as well. Based on a report from research firm IDC Japan, Apple snagged the largest share of mobile phone shipments in the country for the quarter at 26.6%, ending the market dominance of local manufacturers. Popularity of the iPhone 4S rose during the period from October to December and propelled the device maker past Fujitsu / Toshiba's mark of 18.3% and third place Sharp, coming in at 15.7%. Sharp still owned the top spot for 2011, though, with 20.1% of total shipments while Apple finished the year third with 14.2%. US phone sales in October: Curve still in the driver's seat
It's a shame AvianResearch and NPD can't meet up over a couple whiskey sours, figure out a game plan, and go forward with a unified tabulation method for their research -- but until that happens, we're probably going to have to deal with NPD claiming the iPhone 3G is the best-selling phone in the US and AvianResearch saying differently. Anyhoo, RIM's Curve joined forces across AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile to keep its coveted spot atop the list (and with the 8900 waiting in the wings, this can only mean good things for the Curve's future here). Notably new to the list are the G1 -- debuting in the number 7 spot -- and the HTC Touch Diamond, hanging in there at number 10. Anyone care to wager on how the G1 will fare here over the next few months?
The top-selling games in the US over the last 15 years
Forbes, with data supplied by NPD, has released a list of the top-selling games in the US over the last 15 years. NPD only began tracking data 15 years ago, so there may be an outlier from the '80s or early '90s, but it appears the industry really ramped up this millennium, with the top games all being released after 2001.*Holding on to the top title -- and we imagine not for very much longer -- is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with 9.43 million units sold. Surprisingly, Guitar Hero III isn't too far behind with 8.2 million. Madden titles occupy four of the top ten spots. Although they do have different titles, they are arguably the same game. NPD's data shows that Pokemon Red and Blue combined sold 3.1 9.9 million units. Nintendo's DS overtakes PlayStation 2 in lifetime Japanese sales
We already knew Nintendo's DS was quite the popular handheld, and while the PSP recently overtook it in Japanese hardware sales, the most recent numbers show that the Big N's famed DS has actually rocketed above the mighty PlayStation 2 in lifetime sales (in Japan). Notably, the numbers do combine DS and DS Lite units, but there's no mention of how the systems stack up worldwide. Nevertheless, the feat is a fairly impressive one when you consider how much longer the PS2 has been available compared to the DS, and unless Sony somehow lightens the PS2 load even further and starts bundling them in with cereals, we doubt it will reclaim the top spot anytime soon.[Via DSFanboy, thanks J]
