eBay is now offering a new service for sellers of high-end handbags. Today the company launched eBay Authenticate, a program that photographs, lists, sells, ships and verifies the authenticity of luxury handbags from 12 major brands. eBay says the goal is to provide would-be buyers with more confidence in the items they're about to throw down a lot of money for.

MPs urge the UK government to close 'gig economy' loopholes

UK employment laws should be updated so that drivers working for Uber, Deliveroo and other 'gig economy' companies are defined as "workers" rather than "self-employed" by default, a group of MPs has argued. The suggestion is part of a report, published by the House of Commons Works and Pensions Committee, which attacks technology companies for pushing the idea that self-employment is a requirement for flexible hours. "This is a fiction," the report reads. "Self-employment is genuinely flexible and rewarding for many, but people on employment contracts can and do work flexibly; flexibility is not the preserve of poorly paid, unstable contractors."

Netflix has a new translation test to avoid subtitle fails

Netflix supports over 20 languages, many of which aren't dubbed, so subtitles are often the only way for foreign viewers to follow the plot. While the streaming company holds itself to a high standard, the internet abounds with tales of wonky translations. That's why it has developed Hermes, the first-ever proficiency test for caption translators by a major content provider. The aim is to identify subtitlers that understand the subtleties of a language and won't translate "Smashing Pumpkins" to "Pumpkin Puree" (above).

In case you haven't been paying attention for the last seven months or so, it's very, very easy to spend a lot of money on an Apple Watch. But if Apple's own lineup of bands and crazy expensive solid-gold cases aren't exactly working with your own personal aesthetic, fear not: today, the newly-announced set of Hermès leather bands are now available in selected Apple Stores and Hermès locations around the world.

  • TAG Heuer's first smartwatch gets a $400 price bump

Normally, when a company changes its mind about the pricing of a forthcoming gadget, it's to surprise us all with a nice discount. Luxury watch brand TAG Heuer, on the other hand, felt that its first smartwatch, the Carrera Wearable 01, was actually too cheap at $1,400. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Jean-Claude Biver revealed that the timepiece, created with Google and Intel, will now actually retail for $1,800. Biver also let slip that the watch will launch on November 9th at the LVMH building in New York. The executive also feels that $1,800 is a fair price for the unit, since it's only a few hundred bucks more than you'd pay for an Apple Watch Hermés Collection -- produced by a rival luxury goods brand that may, one day, be owned by TAG's parent company.

  • A closer look at that fancy new Hermes Apple Watch band

It might not have been the most groundbreaking thing Apple announced today. In fact, I'd wager that new Apple Watch bands rank at the very bottom of the list, behind new iPhones, a refreshed Apple TV and a big-screen iPad Pro. (I'll let you all weigh in on how you'd rank the other three.) That said, this is a gadget blog, and what are we here for, if not to give you a healthy serving of gadget porn? Chief among the new bands is a leather one made by luxury brand Hermes, available in a "Single Tour" style for $1,100 (ouch) and a "Double Tour" version that wraps twice around your wrist for $1,250 (double ouch). Also pictured: matching Hermes watch faces, because of course. If that's a little outside your budget, Apple also unveiled new silicone "Sport" bands in a host of colors. There's really not much more to it than that -- we think our gallery of hands-on shots tells you all you need to know. Get all the news from today's iPhone event right here.

  • Apple reveals new Watch colors and a leather Hermes band

Apple is trying to put a bit more style and choice into its Watch, so it has just announced an assortment of new bands. The company partnered with French luxury goods maker Hermes to create a hand-stitched leather model (above) that might appeal to folks looking for something more classic than plastic or metal. The priciest version is a "Double Tour" Watch model that wraps twice around your wrist and runs $1,250 (38mm Watch only), while the Single Tour for 38mm and 42mm Watch models starts at $1,100. To complete the effect, there are also matching Hermes watch faces, which we'd hope are included for those prices.

  • MIT's robot borrows quick reflexes from a human pilot

Based on what we've seen at DARPA's Robotics challenge finals, most humanoid machines are still stiff and hilariously clumsy. MIT's new robot named "Hermes," however, moves a bit more gracefully and has human-like reflexes -- because it's hooked up to a human controller. Think Pacific Rim, except Hermes isn't a giant robot and the pilot doesn't have to ride inside it, or Real Steel. The school's Department of Mechanical Engineering's creation can mimic its "master's" movements at the same time. For more delicate actions that require the use of its hands and fingers, the human has to use a joystick-like device.

  • Leica teases our wallets with $50,000 Edition Hermès M9-P, $1,000 scarf sold separately

If you've ever wondered if designer names alone can send a product's price tag through the roof, this should suffice as confirmation. Hermès, the Parisian fashion giant best known for its prohibitively expensive wearable accessories, has teamed up with Leica for some creative marketing. Two special M9-P editions will be available -- a total of 300 Edition Hermès digital rangefinders will ship beginning in June for $25,000, while 100 "very special" (even more exclusive) Edition Hermès - Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas models will be available in July for, ahem, $50,000 (that's fifty thousand, in case you assumed it was a typo). Likely realizing that it would be insanely absurd to unload the M9-P for either price without lenses included, Leica has opted to offer both as complete kits. The less expensive version uses some fancy calfskin leather with a silver chrome finish, and ships with a Leica Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. optic. The "very special" version, on the other hand, includes a Leica Summicron-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH., a Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. and a Leica APO-Summicron-M 90 mm f/2 ASPH -- all finished in anodized silver. It also comes with a bag and a book. Due to the incredibly limited production run, you'll probably want to pitch a tent (or have your assistant park their assistant's Maybach) outside the Washington DC Leica Store, beginning sometime later this month. Update: Need little more convincing about the craftsmanship? There are making-of and unboxing videos embedded after the break.

  • GameBoy Advance Phone caught in the wild (by the guy who built it)

Perhaps if there was some sort of Brundlefly-style gadget mix-up five years ago, the outcome would look like this: an HTC Hermes jammed inside a GameBoy Advance housing. This prototype, presented by Windows Phone Hacker, features some fun changes that make it feel more like your beloved handheld gaming console, and less like your dated Windows Mobile Pocket PC, including a startup GIF animation of the original GameBoy Advance boot screen, custom software that keeps the OS in landscape mode, and custom notifications and ringtones from the Mario games. Also included is PocketGBA emulator for playing GameBoy Advance ROMs on the phone itself. Of course, this is just the beginning of the project: we look forward to seeing a version where the buttons work! In the meantime, check out the thing in action after the break. [Thanks, Juan]

So what's it like to be one of 200 people in the world to own the $12,950 Leica M7 Hermes? Quite good, as it turns out. Vlad Dusil (that's his name, so you know where to direct your envy) of Purse Blog is among the chosen few, but he has blessed us with a quick photoshoot and a cursory impressions piece of the hardware itself. He isn't gonna use it, mind you, as it's an investment piece -- in his words, "This camera will remain in its cozy silk-lined box until I get a worthy cabinet to display it in for a while, then it will go back to rest in its dark box." Can't be sure we wouldn't do the same thing, though, if we had the kind of disposable income that'd afford a $13,000 device. Hit up the source link for pics.

  • HTC announces TyTN II / Kaiser for Europe

Well it's not quite as good as, say, AT&T informing us that we can walk down the block and pick up one this afternoon, but at least HTC has finally given the Kaiser / TyTN II / 8925 an official place in its lineup. Announcing the quad band Windows Mobile 6 handset for European carriers this morning, HTC revealed that Orange, Voda, T-Mobile, and o2 will all get their hands on this Hermes successor, and all the HSDPA, WiFi, and built-n GPS goodness that comes with it. We wish we had more info on plans for a US release, but with TyTN II hitting the EU in October, we suspect it's only a matter of weeks until we can toss the old 8525 into the retired gadgets drawer. We're not sure why HTC waited longer than virtually all of its carrier partners to unleash a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for its own-branded Hermes, the TyTn, but no bother -- the point is it's now available, so there's really no good excuse for anyone with Hermes hardware to still be rocking old-skool WM5 at this point. Meanwhile, users of the P3300 (Artemis), S620 (Excalibur), and Advantage should all get their hookups this month if everything goes according to plan. Wasn't it, like, an eternity ago now that T-Mobile rocked WM6 on the Dash? Better late than never, we suppose.[Via the::unwired]

Germans on O2, relish in this moment, for you are much of the world's envy. After promising a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade path for the Xda trion (that's the HTC Hermes / TyTn for lay folk) not long ago, the carrier has now made good by rolling out the package. Walk, don't run -- it'll wipe your data -- but we figure it's more than worth the hassle nonetheless.[Via the::unwired]

Holy crap, it's a Christmas miracle! Look what Santa Roc A Fella dropped in our laps this morning: shots of the CDMA HTC TyTn, courtesy of our new pal HTC Kid! About freaking time. Here we have UTStarcom XV6800 on Verizon, and this thing is seriously no slouch. It improves on the Hermes with more memory, Bluetooth 2, and, of course, features EV-DO with Rev A support. Here's the dirt: WM5 AKU 3 256MB flash / 96MB RAM Thumb wheel 802.11b/g Bluetooth 2.0 BBAC -- BroadbandAccess Connect, i.e. tetherable EV-DO microSD slot We hear Roc's got more coming soon, watch out for it. Big ups to HTC Kid!

  • HTC TyTN Music Dock charges, syncs, and delights

While we don't expect the Hong Kong-derived HTC TyTN Music Dock to produce the same level of audio fidelity as Orange's Bluetooth variety, we'll admit that getting a dock, charger, and paperweight for 28 bucks isn't such a bad deal. The device sports a charging / syncing cradle for your HTC TyTN (Hermes), i-mate JasJam, Qtek 9600, O2 XDA Trion, Dopod CHT 9000, Orange SPV M3100, or Cingular 8525, as well as touting a pair of stereo speakers, 3.5-millimeter line in jack, and that oh-so-important LED illumination. You'll even get a stereo cable to save you a trip to Radio Shack, but the lack of a headphone port (or line-out) sort of puts a damper on things. Nevertheless, the HTC TyTN Music Dock can be picked up now for HK$190 ($28), but the overseas shipping just might kill the deal.

  • Crossbow in the wild (on a Hermes, no less)

    12.08.2006

After observing that Crossbow (the next version of Windows Mobile destined to find its way into handsets) appears to be little more than a moderate reskin of the Winodws Mobile 5 we all know and love, our excitement sorta tempered; instead, we started hunkering down for the real prize, Photon -- a major rewrite that's still a ways off yet. Even so, we can't help but feel a twinge of joy at seeing the beautified platform doing its thing on a Hermes in the wild, especially considering that the Hermes is basically a year old. If nothing else, it gives us hope that the lives of the handsets in all our pockets right now might be extended a bit. Don't get us wrong, we'll be compulsively upgrading our hardware ad infinitum right alongside many of our readers -- but we suspect a Hermes with Crossbow will resell for a touch more on eBay than a Hermes with old-skool 5.0, y'know?[Via PDA247]
