RED's Hydrogen One phone makes a cameo in the 'F9' trailer
Now that the nearly four-minute-long F9: The Fast Saga trailer is here, fans of the long-running series can enjoy some surprise resurrections (spoiler alert: watch the trailer before scrolling to the end of this post), but the strangest appearance belongs to a smartphone. For reasons that may (or may not) be explained when the movie hits theaters May 22nd, multiple characters are driving around with the RED's Hydrogen One phone strapped to the dashboards of their cars.
RED founder retires, and the Hydrogen phone project is over
At the age of 70, RED founder Jim Jannard has announced he's retiring, saying that between his age and a few health issues "it is now time." As he steps away from the company, he also announced its Hydrogen phone project will end after producing just one device. When the Hydrogen One arrived late last year it brought some technology, like "4V" for its display and image capture that was innovative, but didn't live up to its $1,295 price. Earlier this year RED announced plans to "radically" change the program and build a device to have wider appeal across pros and regular users. That's all done now, although the Hydrogen One will continue to receive software updates, and RED Digital Cinema is still operating with Jarred Land as its president. You'll just have to find your next moonshot phone from a camera company somewhere else.
RED finally ships the $1,600 titanium Hydrogen One
At long last, RED is shipping the titanium version of its Hydrogen One phone. It promised the variant when it announced the handset in 2017, and took pre-orders for that version at the full $1,595 cost. When RED delayed the titanium model last September, it sent those who pre-ordered it the aluminum version, and now those folks are receiving a titanium handset as well at no extra cost.
RED plans to 'radically' change Hydrogen phone program
If you bought RED's Hydrogen One hoping that its module system would improve its frankly lackluster camera technology, you might not want to hold your breath for an imminent upgrade. RED has pulled references to the conventional camera module from the Hydrogen One page, leaving its fate up in the air. Company founder Jim Jannard didn't go into detail as to why the module mention vanished, but indicated that RED was in the midst of "radically changing" the Hydrogen program to appeal to both pros and everyday users -- the camera system in particular is due for a shake-up.
Red teases 'Lithium,' a 3D camera for its Hydrogen One phone
At $1,300, RED's Hydrogen One smartphone was never really aimed at consumers, so now it's starting to reveal a strategy for its bread-and-butter pro cinematographer market. On Facebook, it showed off "Lithium," a 3D camera that essentially uses the Hydrogen One as a monitor and controller. "Big things in the works for next for next year: Lithium," said the caption, with no other information.
RED Hydrogen One graphic outlines the holographic phone's specs
RED has been dribbling out details of its much-delayed Hydrogen One phone for a long time, but getting a proper summary of its features has been... difficult. Thankfully, director Phil Holland has stepped up to the plate. Now that the first pre-orders are shipping, Holland has published a "tech overview" infographic showing just what you'll get. Some of them you may be very familiar with, such as the 5.7-inch "holographic" LCD, dual front and back cameras and the pogo pin connector for add-ons. Others may be relatively new to you, such as the 6GB of RAM, 4,500mAh battery and the "deep cavity" stereo speakers.
RED shares official Hydrogen One smartphone porn
The RED Hydrogen One could be the phone of our bleeding-edge dreams, or it could be too good to be true. It sports an impressive holographic display and it's modular, allowing owners to bolt on accessories as they see fit. The Hydrogen bucks current design trends, too, opting for rugged, scalloped edges and a massive camera surrounded by carbon fiber. Until now, RED has only shown off renders of the phone and we've gotten a first-hand look at it, but this week founder Jim Jannard shared actual press photos of the Hydrogen.
A closer look at RED's audacious Hydrogen One phone
In a van sitting between the high school from Pretty Little Liars and the Stars Hollow gazebo from Gilmore Girls, RED founder Jim Jannard takes out his smartphone — the Hydrogen One — and starts whipping through demos with me. We're at AT&T's Shape entertainment conference at Warner Brothers Studios and this might be the most surreal hands-on experience I've ever had with a phone. Then again, this might be the most surreal smartphone I've ever used.
RED is building an 8K 3D camera for its holographic phone
RED is partnering with a company called Lucid on an 8K, 3D prosumer camera that will work with its incoming Hydrogen One smartphone, Lucid announced. The device -- shown above in prototype form at RED's Hydrogen One party -- has two synced 4K cameras that capture and convert video and images to 8K 4V (.h4v) files. Those can then be displayed in 3D on the Hydrogen One's "holographic" display, and later uploaded to YouTube, Facebook and RED's own content hub.
RED's Hydrogen One smartphone will ship this summer
RED's much-hyped Hydrogen One smartphone is edging ever-closer to market, according to an update from its creators. In a thread on the camera company's reduser forums, the makers of the holographic-display phone have revealed pre-order will open "probably in April," with an official ship date "sometime in the summer". Details beyond this are vague, but according to the post carrier support for the phone is "unprecedented" and social media partners will include "big dogs."
RED’s $1,200 holographic phone features snap-on camera accessories
Digital camera maker RED is still releasing new products at different price points, like its $15,000 4K Raven bundle the company plans to release in a partnership with Apple. But the company's looking to enter the mobile market, revealing last month that its first device will be its holographic Hydrogen One smartphone with a planned sticker price of $1,200. While the earlier news was light on details and only had a render of the upcoming phone, a YouTuber just uploaded a hands-on experience with a prototype, giving us our first look at what it will actually look like.
Camera maker RED is building a phone with a 'holographic' screen
We've seen the venerable Kodak and Polaroid brands slapped onto smartphones before, but RED — makers of those pricey digital cinema cameras — is trying something a little different. The company just revealed its plans to release the Hydrogen One, a high-powered, unlocked Android smartphone with prices starting at an eye-watering $1,195. That gets you an aluminum phone with some crazy looking grips; the titanium finish will set you back an extra $400. And here's the really crazy part: if RED can actually deliver what it promises, the Hydrogen One may actually be worth the asking price.
