Lenovo is leaping quickly on the latest NVIDIA and Intel technology for its gaming laptops. It's introducing Legion 5i and Legion 7i portables (successors to the Y540 and Y740 respectively) that, most notably, are among the first to use NVIDIA's Advanced Optimus graphics switching. The tech both lowers power consumption in less-intensive moments and ramps up performance in GPU-heavy situations, theoretically giving you added battery life and higher frame rates in the same package. The Legion 7i also touts the option of new GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q graphics if you insist on the best possible visuals.

Lenovo's latest Legion gaming laptop relies on an external GPU

Lenovo is kicking off 2020 with a gaming laptop that needs a companion to thrive. It's introducing the Legion Y740S, a slim 15.6-inch laptop (billed as Lenovo's "thinnest and lightest" gaming model) meant to couple with the company's first external GPU, the Legion BoostStation. It has some decent horsepower with up to a Core i9 processor, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD, but you're stuck with integrated Intel graphics if you buy nothing else -- you absolutely need that eGPU if you're going to play any modern 3D games. At least the 4.18-pound weight and 0.58-inch thickness make it easy to stuff in your bag.

Most Star Trek news lately has focused on the small screen with its shows for CBS All Access, but now there's news about an upcoming movie that will be written and directed by Noah Hawley. While Hawley is so-far best known for his work on FX TV series Fargo and Legion, he made his feature film debut earlier this year on Lucy in the Sky. There's no word on plotlines or release date, but according to Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, this will be the fourth film in the current series of movies, featuring returning stars including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban. It's also separate from a spin-off Star Trek project under development with Quentin Tarantino as its producer.

Lenovo has announced two new gaming laptops, while it has refreshed some models in its Legion lineup -- all of which work with 9th-gen Intel Core i7 processors. The IdeaPad L340 Gaming laptop is a little more budget-friendly than other portable Lenovo gaming machines. It has blue lighting and options to switch between Gaming and Quiet modes. It's compatible with NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 1650 GPU and features Dolby Audio, while Intel Optane memory is available as an option. The L340 will be available late May, starting at $870 for the 15-inch model and $920 for its 17-inch sibling.

Lenovo has largely gone low-profile rather than flashy with its Legion gaming laptop design language, but unfortunately, the performance stayed under the radar, too. The company has largely rectified that with its latest Legion models, the budget Y540 and top-end Y740. The 17-inch version of the latter model packs NVIDIA's all-new RTX 2080 Max-Q chip, giving it power that would beat any laptop from last year.

If I asked you to imagine a gaming laptop, flashy designs, colorful lights and beefy chasses probably come to mind. Lenovo wants to move away from that motif and appeal to more users by redesigning its Legion series of gaming systems. For E3 this year, the company is introducing the new Y530, Y730 (in two sizes) and Y7000 laptops, which feature a subtler aesthetic, among other updates. It's also adding four new desktops to its lineup -- the T530 and T730 towers and the cubic C530 and C730.

Lenovo is taking its future in VR very seriously -- after all, it just outed a new VR headset that won't completely break the bank. Here's the thing, though: We're going to need a lot of content for these things, and that's where Lenovo's new Legion gaming notebook comes in. It's set for a launch this coming April (which should be well before that new headset hits), but we already got some hands-on time here at CES in Las Vegas.
