There are many, many games that recreate the look of 8-bit and 16-bit games, but there isn't a lot for people who grew up with the first generation of 3D-oriented consoles. Where's their nostalgia hit? Playtonic Games is taking care of it. The studio is releasing a "64-bit Tonic" for Yooka-Laylee that gives the game a very appropriate Nintendo 64 flair. Yes, you too can revisit the heady days of the mid-'90s with tube TV fuzziness, muddy textures, crude lighting effects and even choppy frame rates.

Overcooked, the game from publisher Team17 and developer Ghost Town Games that has players chaotically cooking recipes and serving dishes is now available for Nintendo Switch. The game has been well received with nominations for multiple Independent Games Festival awards earlier this year and two BAFTA award wins.

After launching last year on PC and Sony platforms, both OlliOlli 2 and Not a Hero are heading to the Xbox One in 2016, each in its own definitive edition. OlliOlli 2: XL Edition includes the complete sidescrolling skateboarding game plus the new FreeSkate Mode. Check out our 2015 live stream with the developers for a taste of OlliOlli 2's grinding goodness. If you're in the mood for something more violent -- and somehow more adorable at the same time -- Not a Hero: Super Snazzy Edition features the base game (an isometric shooter starring an anthropomorphized bunny) plus new, exclusive content called "Me, Myself and BunnyLord."

Allison Road's Kickstarter is canceled. Not because developers at Lilith Ltd can't reach their £250,000 goal or because they aren't up for the challenge after all -- Allison Road will now be published by Worms studio Team17. This deal allows Lilith to ditch crowdfunding altogether, which is a nice option now that the game has already benefited from the attention of a viral Kickstarter campaign. "Working with Team17 will give us the chance to make our game unhindered creatively, but at the same time will give us the resources, support and experience that only a 25-year-old studio can give," Lilith writes in a Kickstarter update.

  • Try to survive a sadistic circus in 'Penarium' for PC and consoles

Humans make for more complex strategy than code can. Take Penarium designer and producer Rick van Ginkel's story for example: His studio, Self Made Miracle, once tried to develop a strategy game that relied on complicated spreadsheets and algorithms. It "failed horribly," he says. "I was doing spreadsheet balancing all the time and couldn't get it right. That is why we decided to go for an action game where I could do game design based more on 'feeling' rather than mathematics." That new, feeling-based game is Penarium, a twitchy, bloody, pixelated romp about a man attempting to survive a violent circus attraction in the late 19th century. Instead of forcing strategy into the code or controls, Penarium puts the complexity in players' hands.

  • 'Yooka-Laylee' snags a publisher after record-breaking Kickstarter

What's the next step after fully funding your game in 40 minutes on Kickstarter? If you're the team behind Yooka-Laylee, Playtonic, you get a publisher to help with stuff like localization (translating dialogue and text for different regions), QA testing and other unglamorous but still necessary elements of game development. To wit, the former Banjo Kazooie creatives have hooked up with indie label Team17, perhaps best known for the Worms and Alien Breed franchises. This partnership means that Playtonic can worry about working on the game itself while Team17 takes care of the more menial bits and bobs. Good thing, too considering Playtonic is still planning to hit a simultaneous October 2016 release across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U. If you'd like to check out more, hit the jump for our interview with the folks from the studio.

Mouldy Toof Studios' prison-breaking game The Escapists will launch on Xbox One on February 13, the developer announced today. Additionally, the game will launch in full on Steam on that day after nearly six months on Early Access. In it, players plot an extravagant prison escape while abiding by the prison's schedule, crafting weapons and tools while not raising suspicion from guards. The Escapists' full version will feature six unique prisons and six different methods to escape from them, such as digging your way out or taking over the whole facility. The game also includes ten prison jobs that players can perform in order to learn useful skills relevant to their escape strategies. The game is currently $15 on Steam Early Access. • Light review: Standing in shadow

Light, from developer Just A Pixel and published by Worms studio Team17, is a top-down, minimalist stealth game that calls to mind the likes of Monaco, Mark of the Ninja and Hotline Miami. Unfortunately, it never hits its notes as expertly as those games do. Neither great nor particularly bad, it is the definition of "middle-tier." Light succeeds where it needs to, but never exceeds expectations. For some, that will be enough. For most, Light is the flickering bulb of a dying flashlight.

Just a Pixel's simple, stealthy game, Light, is now available on Steam. It is among the first to be published by Worms series developer Team17 in nearly two decades, a feat that Team17 first announced in November. In Light, Players guide a square icon through a blueprint-like overhead view of a building, hacking doors and terminals while avoiding the line of sight of cameras and guards. The hero of the minimalistic game is a man with no memory who stumbles on the plans of a shadowy organization. Light received the nod for Steam distribution from the Greenlight community in December. The PC, Mac and Linux game is 30 percent off ($9.09) for its introductory week until July 21, at which point it will cost $12.99 (£9.99 / €11.99). [Image: Team17]

  • Worms dev invites you to think inside the box with Schrodinger's Cat

    by

In 1935, Erwin Schrodinger designed a thought experiment in which a feline trapped in a box could be said to be simultaneously alive and dead until it was observed as being one or the other (to be clear, the experiment was imaginary, so weep not for its nine lives); this experiment is now known as "Schrodinger's Cat." In 2014, "Schrodinger's Cat" will also be the name of a video game collaboration between Worms series developer Team17 and indie developer Italic Pig. Schrodinger's Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark invites players into the box in which Schrodinger would have placed one unfortunate kitty for some fun. The game's trailer, however, warns that Schrodinger "doesn't know the half of what goes on in there" before showing a purple cat using anthropomorphic particles to move about in a subatomic zoo. ... Wait, what? Go home, science. You're drunk. Yes, Schrodinger's Cat is a platformer in which players explore the subatomic level of existence and use quantum physics to solve puzzles. And who said quantum science wasn't fun? Schrodinger's Cat is slated to release in Q3 of this year for PC, Mac and Linux via Steam. [Image: Italic Pig]

Worms developer Team17 revealed at the PlayStation Open Day in Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, Englandthat that a new intellectual property named Flockers is in the works. The developer is expected to officially reveal the game next week, according to Develop. "This is the most important game we've worked on in over a decade," Team17 Managing Director Debbie Bestwick said, perhaps alluding to the fact that Flockers will be the first new IP for the developer in more than ten years. Team17 is best known for its long-running Worms series, which will see the addition of Worms: Battlegrounds this year on PS4 and Xbox One. Team17 is also in the process of positioning itself as a publisher for the first time in nearly two decades, as it will fund the development of Just a Pixel's stealthy PC game Light and prison breakout sim The Escapists. Team17, the UK outfit behind the popular Worms franchise, will publish Mouldy Toof Studios' indie prison break-out sim for PC, The Escapists. This is the second game to be published under Team17's third-party publishing label, the first being indie top-down stealth game Light. In The Escapists, players assume the role of a prisoner determined to escape from confinement. Players craft items and weapons from everyday objects found around the prison while adhering to a strict schedule of activities. Inmates must avoid exposure during cell shakedowns and plan their escape without tipping off the guards. The Escapists was successfully funded through Kickstarter back in November and passed through Steam Greenlight within a week of its submission.
