It's been a pretty busy year for Alienware, but Dell's boutique gaming brand isn't showing any signs of slowing down soon. At Gamescom this year, the company is unveiling a slew of new gaming hardware, both in a bid to throw in new specs and bring its revamped "Legend" industrial design to more products.

Dell unveils G-Series and Alienware laptops with NVIDIA's latest GPUs

Dell is taking advantage of the launch of new Intel 9th-generation CPUs and NVIDIA's latest GTX 16-series GPUs to refresh some of its gaming laptops. First up, it's introducing new G5 and G7 laptops today with GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and 1650 Max-Q GPUs, and will introduce RTX models with 9th-generation Intel CPUs starting in June. Those should be speedier than the current GTX 1050 Ti and 1060 models, and cheaper than the RTX-powered laptops. Both models will soon be available with four-zone RGB keyboards and 240 Hz 1080p or 4K OLED displays. Dell has yet to say how much any of these mid-range models will cost, but the current G5 15-inch gaming laptop with GTX 1050 Ti graphics starts at $900.

The Area-51M is a unique beast. At first glance, it looks like what we used to expect from gaming laptops: It's an intimidating, hulking machine that doesn't belong in the modern age of slim notebooks. But what makes it special is under the hood. Instead of slightly slower and energy-efficient mobile components, it features powerful gear you'd typically find in desktops, like Intel's octa-core i9-9900K CPU, NVIDIA's full-speed RTX GPUs and up to 64GB of RAM. Best of all, you can upgrade those parts down the line, just like a tower gaming rig. What exactly do you call a machine that looks like a laptop but functions like a desktop? The Area-51M practically defies classification. Let's take the philosophically simple approach for now: It's a gaming laptop like no other.

Alienware m15 review: Dell’s first thin gaming laptop doesn’t disappoint

Alienware finally made a thin and light gaming laptop, and it was worth the wait. For years, Dell's gaming brand has been pumping out powerful, but hefty gaming machines. The Alienware m15, though, is its first step towards a truly modern laptop design. And it's here just in time -- throughout 2018 we saw companies like ASUS, Razer and MSI all deliver thin new machines of their own. The m15 is a sign Alienware won't be left behind.

It's been a busy CES for Dell's Alienware gaming brand. They unveiled the most customizable laptop we've ever seen -- the Area 51m -- as well as a slim new 17-inch notebook, both of which feature NVIDIA's powerful mobile RTX graphics. And then there's OLED, which is coming to Dell's 15-inch XPS, m17 and G series machines, and it's also the star component of the huge Alienware 55 Monitor. To break down all of the news, I chatted with Matt McGowan, director of Dell's PC gaming division, on the Engadget stage at CES. The big takeaway? Dell is ready to make a big gaming splash this year.

Monday at CES 2019 didn't quite match the hectic pace of Sunday, but there was a lot for gamers to see. We played with Razer's Hypersense haptic feedback system and found it a bit underwhelming, but the Turret Xbox One keyboard and mouse was more useful. Alienware unveiled a 240 Hz m15 gaming laptop that will beat HP's Omen 15 to market, along with an OLED screen version and the beastly Area 51m with an upgradeable CPU and GPU.

Alienware's 55-inch 4K OLED gaming monitor is pure eye candy

Big screens aren't just for movies anymore. That's something NVIDIA proved last year with its 65-inch BFG displays -- now Dell's Alienware is taking a stab at a large gamer monitor of its own. But instead of a huge slab of LCD, it's a 55-inch 4K OLED screen running at 120 Hz. And unlike other displays, the Alienware 55 OLED Monitor can actually run 4K at that high refresh rate.

Earlier this week, HP said it would be the first to release a laptop with a 240 Hz display, but according to Dell, that's not quite the case. The company has announced that its Alienware m15 lightweight gaming laptop will also have a 240 Hz display and will arrive in March, ahead of the July date that HP promised. It will also have a refresh rate below 1 millisecond, all of which should make for pretty incredible gaming performance.

Alienware's Area 51m laptop has an upgradable CPU and graphics card

From the beginning, Alienware computers have been built with hardcore gamers in mind -- that explains the stylish cases and aggressive designs, which helped spark the rise of bold gaming PCs. But the Alienware brand was initially inspired by The X-Files and '90s-era science fiction, and that aesthetic hasn't evolved much since then. Now, it's time for something different. With the Area 51m -- a reference to the company's very first laptop -- Alienware is making its biggest design leap in years. And it also includes something truly innovative for gamers: an upgradable desktop CPU and NVIDIA RTX 20-series video card. It gives a new meaning to the term "desktop replacement."

Alienware's lightest 17-inch notebook ever has NVIDIA's RTX graphics

Just a few months after Alienware unveiled its first truly slim notebook, the company is back with a bigger model. The Alienware m17 shares the same refined design as the previous m15 -- slim bezels around the screen, and fewer extraneous case bits that added so much weight with the company's earlier notebooks --while delivering a 17.3-inch display and NVIDIA's recently announced RTX 20-series mobile graphics. And surprisingly, it's only a pound heavier than the earlier model at 5.79 pounds. It's Alienware's lightest 17-inch notebook ever, and it's also slimmer than most of the competition today.

Alienware finally made a thin and light gaming laptop

Gaming laptops aren't the lumbering bricks they used to be, as we've seen from the slew of offerings this year from ASUS, Gigabyte and Razer, all of which weigh under five pounds. But Alienware, Dell's flagship laptop line for gamers, has lagged behind with heavy cases and archaic screen bezels. That all changes with the Alienware m15, the company's first truly lightweight and slim offering. It's 14 percent thinner than the Alienware 13, all while sporting a much larger 15.6-inch display. The m15 also clocks in at 4.8 pounds, 20 percent less than the Alienware 13's 5.8 pounds (the current 15-inch is even worse at 7.69 pounds). Clearly, this is new territory.

For some of you, picking up a MacBook like the rest of your peers just won't do. If you're willing to trade portability for power, desktop computers are the way to go. Since it's probably the biggest-ticket item you'll buy for your apartment throughout college, it's important to choose the right one for your needs (and budget). This goes double for those of you spending a little more on a machine that will get you through graduate studies and beyond.

If you're going to be playing Fornite for hours at a time, you need a headset that not only sounds good, but is also super comfy. Alienware revealed its Wireless Gaming Headset last week ahead of E3, but today I got to briefly test its merits. I'll admit when I first saw it last week, I wasn't blown away with the overall design. But as I would find out on the show floor, the company built a solid and capable gaming accessory here.

Alienware may have created the ultimate gamer hotel suite

In the past, we've seen hotel rooms and even entire hotels specifically designed for those who prefer the orange glow of de_dust2 to a sandy beach. But Alienware's new gaming suite in Hilton's Panama City location might well be the easiest place yet to let a week of your life completely pass you by. Room 2425 offers guests the chance to avoid the rich culture of the Central American capital and enjoy the company of a monstrous Alienware gaming PC, Oculus Rift VR headset and Xbox One Elite. Move between the racing seat centerpiece and beanbags, foregoing the stunning view of the South Pacific Ocean to instead bask in the warm glow of the room's 65-inch 4K TV.
