When Sony offered a deep dive into the PlayStation 5's specs this week, it wasn't crystal clear about backwards compatibility for PS4 games. In an updated blog post about the upcoming console's architecture, it clarified that most PS4 games should work on it. "With all of the amazing games in PS4's catalog, we've devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5," it wrote. "We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5."

'Crackdown' is available for free -- and playable on Xbox One

The original Crackdown was an early hit for Xbox 360 -- packed-in access to the Halo 3 beta didn't hurt -- and now Xbox players can revisit 2007 for the low, low cost of nothing. With no explanation or fanfare the game has had its digital price zeroed out, although it's possible this could be tied to the XO18 event in Mexico this weekend where Xbox chief Phil Spencer will appear. It will include a two-hour Inside Xbox stream on Saturday at 4 PM ET with news about Crackdown 3, Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Forza Horizon 4, a dozen Game Pass announcements and "a surprise or two." It's been a while since we've heard from Crackdown 3 and giving folks a taste of the original could help drum up hype for a new entry in the series that's now due to arrive in 2019. After delays and some lackluster showings, it certainly can't hurt. Anyway, agents, Crackdown has been available in backwards compatibility for Xbox One -- and upgraded once again on the more powerful Xbox One X -- since February, so just hit the link and give it a download.

If your Xbox copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is stashed away on a shelf somewhere, you might want to pull it out as you'll have some use for it again next week. Starting next Thursday, Rockstar Games is adding backwards compatibility for the game on Xbox One, as well as Midnight Club: Los Angeles and the slightly off-brand Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis.

In terms of new software, Microsoft doesn't have much to offer Xbox One owners this holiday unless you want to play the fourth Forza in as many years. What it does have though, are a baker's dozen of games from the original Xbox. Some we already knew about like Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Xbox launch title Fuzion Frenzy, but there are a few surprises as well.

Ask a Xbox One fan what game they'd most like to see added to the console's backwards compability list and you'll probably get Call of Duty: Black Ops II as an answer. It was the most-requested title on the Xbox Feedback site. Even Xbox boss Phil Spencer once told a fan on Twitter he really wanted to see it come to the Xbox One.

Grand Theft Auto V recently shipped 75 million copies, but if you wanted to play what came before it on Xbox One you were out of luck. Until now. Starting today, Grand Theft Auto IV and its $50 million expansion packs will be playable on Microsoft's latest console. The base game and "The Ballad of Gay Tony" will run you $20 each, while the biker-focused expansion "The Lost and Damned" is $10.

The pinnacle of the Battlefield series is at long last backward compatible on Xbox One. Of course, I'm talking about Battlefield Bad Company 2, which came out way back in 2010. There have been four games in the franchise since (Battlefield 3, 4, Hardline and last year's Battlefield 1), but the developers at DICE still haven't gone back to the Bad Company well.

Revisit 2005 by playing 'Call of Duty 2' on your Xbox One

Back before Call of Duty went full-on Michael Bay, the series focused on historical conflicts ignored by the then unstoppable Medal of Honor series. Xbox 360 launch title Call of Duty 2 was the last game in the series from original developer Infinity Ward to do such. And now, you have the chance to play through the Battle of Pointe du Hoc once again. How's that? The objective-based WWII shooter is now backward compatible on Xbox One. If nothing else, it's an interesting glimpse both at how much the franchise has changed and how FPS themselves have evolved over the past 11 years. Because, even in 2005, CoD 2 was considered a bit old-school in terms of design.

Need a break from Overwatch, or, if you're lucky, the Battlefield 1 alpha? Well, if you're an Xbox One owner, you should definitely check out the newly backwards-compatible Red Dead Redemption. If you still have your Xbox 360 disc hanging around, simply pop it in and download the update and you're good to go. Folks who own the game digitally can simply download it from the "my games and apps" section. Same with the Undead Nightmare story expansion pack.

It's been almost 17 years to the day since Pokémon Snap released on the Nintendo 64 and we still haven't seen a sequel. The quirky on-rails first-person "shooter" that had you taking pictures of the pocket monsters in their natural habitat released just as Poké fever was catching on here in the States, but since then fans' imaginations have been the only place for a follow-up. Next week on April 4th Nintendo is releasing the game on the Wii U Virtual Console. In Japan. Where it'll cost a paltry ¥1,028 ($9.15).

It was a big deal when Sony introduced PS2 backward-compatibility on the PlayStation 4 with the launch of Star Wars: Battlefront, but it's already old hat, apparently. With its latest PlayStation Store update, the company released Rockstar titles Bully and Manhunt without a lot of fanfare. As before, the games get "full 1080p up-rendering and enhanced features such as trophies, shareplay, remote play, activity feeds and second screen support for game manuals with 'PS Vita' or PS App." That means you'll get nearly the same experience as on a PS2, though Sony adds that "some features may not function properly."

Ever since Microsoft announced backwards compatibility for the Xbox One, gamers have campaigned for the inclusion of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption. The open-world western is yet to grace Microsoft's 100+ strong list of available games, but the probability of it making an appearance was given a massive boost after it briefly appeared on the Xbox One marketplace for a few hours over the weekend.

  • Xbox One adds backwards compatibility for 'Witcher 2' and more

Microsoft is keen to make its Xbox One Backward Compatibility as robust as possible. The feature, which lets users play Xbox 360 titles on Microsoft's latest console, continues to grow thanks to help from developers. A testament to this is a slew of new backwards-compatible games arriving today, including Soulcalibur, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (free until February 5th) and Counter-Strike: GO, plus a few others. What's most interesting here, though, is that Microsoft says it will now start releasing titles as they become available, instead of setting a launch date for them every month. That's a good move, if you ask us -- the sooner we can reminisce over old games, the better.
