'Daredevil' season two trailer is all about The Punisher

Netflix has teased Daredevil's second season before, but today we've got a full-blown trailer showing the return to Hell's Kitchen. Matt Murdock seems conflicted about his actions in season one, but has little time to reflect as The Punisher, played by The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal, enters the fray with guns blazing. The vigilante is taking down crime lords by any means necessary, which worries Murdock as innocent lives are caught in the crossfire. The trailer finishes with The Punisher claiming Daredevil is a "half measure" and "can't finish the job." As you would expect, it ends in more bloodshed as the pair face off in a grisly downtown New York.

Netflix has revealed that Daredevil, one of its best-received original series, will launch its second season on March 18th. The rumor mill had the date as March 25th, but the streaming company perhaps wanted to move it to avoid the highly anticipated film premiere of Batman vs. Superman from Marvel rival DC. The upcoming season will feature classic Daredevil baddy Frank Castle, aka the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), and long-time love interest Elektra (Elodie Yung).

We've come a long way since the Harryhausen-era of special effects. Instead of countless hours spent adjusting claymation models, modern VFX require more computer processing power than the moon mission. But while they seamlessly blend into our storytelling, creating convincing special effects is still no easy feat. Just ask Shade VFX CEO, Bryan Godwin.

Netflix's second Marvel series, Jessica Jones, doesn't arrive until November 20th, but it's already teasing the next round of Daredevil. Season one was well received earlier this year, and this past weekend the cast dropped by New York Comic-Con for a panel and to meet with fans. You can check out the half-hour panel discussion embedded after the break, as well as a trailer that recaps season one and gives us glimpses at new characters Elektra and Frank Castle. Daredevil season two on Netflix is headed our way in 2016, along with a new series for Luke Cage.

Despite the popularity of Netflix's original shows, the streaming giant doesn't actually own most of the content it delivers to customers. It's a situation that the company is working hard to rectify, but in the meantime it has to negotiate with partners to continue serving up shows like House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black and its latest hit, Daredevil. The Marvel series only hit Netflix on April 10th but it's already proved lucrative enough for Reed Hastings and co. to renew the series for a second season.

  • Netflix adds descriptive audio tracks after Daredevil snafu

Netflix hit a nerve last weekend when its new series Daredevil, which follows the sightless crimefighter's early rise, premiered without a descriptive audio track for blind viewers. As The Mary Sue reports, that irony did not sit well with viewers, many of whom took to Twitter or Change.org to voice their displeasure. In response, Netflix has announced that, starting today, Daredevil will feature an additional descriptive track selectable from the language options menu. The timing of the announcement does seem a bit convenient to say the least. Still, the streaming service will also be adding the tracks to other series including House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Marco Polo, which also prominently stars Tom Wu as blind martial arts prodigy "Hundred Eyes", in the coming weeks. At least it didn't require a lawsuit to bring Netflix around this time.

March is over, and in a few hours March Madness will be too. As the NCAA Men's basketball tournament wraps up -- as well as the first season Better Call Saul -- we're eyeing another championship series with intrigue and plenty at stake: HBO's Game of Thrones, now returning for its fifth season. It's accompanied by Silicon Valley, while on FX the season premiere of Louie comes along with The Comedians, starring Josh Gad and Billy Crystal. Last but not least is Netflix, premiering its first team-up with Marvel, Daredevil. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Rivals HBO and Netflix aren't really going head-to-head yet, but by the time Daredevil and the next season of Silicon Valley air, they could be. HBO is targeting April for the launch of its standalone streaming service, right around the time its Mike Judge-produced series about a tech startup kicks off season two April 12th (along with a little show called Game of Thrones). That will come the same weekend Netflix posts season one of Daredevil on April 10th, as its first collaboration with Marvel. There's still plenty of time to make a decision about what to watch (first), but short preview trailers for both series arrived this week so check them out after the break -- yes, we threw in Game of Thrones too.

  • Netflix crosses 50 million subscribers worldwide and takes aim at Comcast / TWC

It looks like that (pending 2 years for existing customers) price hike hasn't greatly affected Netflix's popularity, as it announced today that it has 50 million customers altogether. About 36 million of them are in the US, and Netflix specified that's about to launch in more European countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg) in September. Its profit also more than doubled this quarter, up to $71 million from about $30 million in the same period last year. The only real change mentioned for customers is that it's about to start distributing in-store gift cards this fall, so you can give the gift of Netflix or join without having to pay online with a credit card. The company's focus of course is how it's building up a library of exclusive content, and it says Orange is the New Black quickly became the most watched series in every Netflix territory when season two launched. Upcoming shows include Sense8 from the Wachowskis and the Daredevil series it's making with Marvel, and it's cast a number of big names for those shows already like Vincent D'Onofrio, Naveen Andrews and Rosario Dawson -- now that Netflix scored 31 Emmy nominations this year they clearly have a tough act to follow. The company's earnings chat will start in a few minutes, check after the break to watch it live and see a few more notes about its current status.

  • Marvel Heroes introduces new game mode in Training Day update

Over the weekend Marvel Heroes launched Game Update 2.3, also known as Training Day. This latest update introduced an all-new game mode for players to enjoy. The S.H.I.E.L.D Holo-Sim game mode lets players dive into a high-tech holographic simulation room either alone or with a friend and face waves of enemies and iconic villains; the more waves of enemies defeated, the better the reward. The update also includes design reviews for both Human Torch and Daredevil (the latter of which also got a snazzy new Noir costume) as well as item, crafting, and loot changes. Full details can be found in the Training Day patch notes. [Source: Gazillion press release]

  • Netflix's Daredevil TV show will be led by Cabin in The Woods director Drew Goddard

    by

    12.08.2013

Netflix's slate of original content has been extraordinarily well-received so far, and that's likely related to the people behind the shows. Big names like David Fincher and Kevin Spacey drew people to House of Cards, while the award-winning Orange is the New Black came from Jenji Kohan, the creator of Weeds. A string of collaborations with Marvel will lead off with a new 13-episode Daredevil series in 2015, and now Marvel has announced Drew Goddard will take the helm. He's serving as writer and director of the show's first episode, as well as executive producer and showrunner for the series. Previously he directed and co-wrote (with Joss Whedon) The Cabin in the Woods, and is also credited as a writer for Cloverfield, World War Z, Lost and Alias. The Man Without Fear's big-screen outing didn't go so well and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC has been uneven at best, so we'll see if Goddard can turn things around this time.

  • Marvel's giving Daredevil another shot, this time with more Netflix and (hopefully) less Affleck

Between The Avengers, X-Men and the 900th Spider-man reboot, Marvel's feeling the movie love. The company's also doing all right on the TV front, thanks to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The next step? Netflix, obviously. You can already find a number of the publisher's superheroes over on the streaming service, and now its parent company, Disney, is looking for something a bit more original. All parties are no doubt hoping we've got that dreadful Affleck fiasco out of our collective consciousness long enough to give a new Daredevil series a shot. Also on the docket are bits starring Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage (woo!). The deal includes a "minimum of four thirteen episode series" and a Defenders mini-series.

Defiance players are in for a little treat for their patience during a tumultuous opening week. Trion Worlds acknowledged the various issues that the game and its community have gone through, and thus the studio has put together a gift package as a way to thank customers for their patronage. Current players have received several bonuses in their account, including a "Daredevil" exclusive title and one-week boosts to weapons skill, scrip, loot, and XP. "We hope this shows you that we do appreciate you on this journey of Defiance, trying out something new, trying something different," wrote Executive Producer Nathan Richardsson. • New Marvel Heroes trailer is all about cleaning up the kitchen

    by
    Eliot Lefebvre

Yes, you read that title correctly. Marvel Heroes has put out a trailer that's all about cleaning up the kitchen. Specifically, cleaning up Hell's Kitchen, one of the cheapest areas of Manhattan and a hotbed of organized crime and ethnic tensions. (In the Marvel universe, anyway. In the real world it's pretty high-rent now.) Fans of Marvel can probably guess at the major players in the trailer just by knowing the area. Even if you're not familiar with the comics, however, the trailer makes it clear that the area is crawling with crime under the direction of the infamous Kingpin, with both relatively normal thugs with guns and superpowered threats like Electra and Bullseye. Plenty of space for an enterprising hero to clean things up, in other words. Check out the full trailer just past the break. If that makes you curious for more information about how the game plays, you can jump back a little and read our hands-on impression. [Source: Gazillion Entertainment press release]

  • Jetman soars over Rio, flies circles around historical landmarks (video)

Why would you want to leap out of a perfectly good aircraft? To fly a winged jetpack over the city of Rio de Janeiro, of course. It sounds nuts, but it's just a day in the life for Yves Rossy, the self proclaimed "Jetman" who flew over the Grand Canyon last year. Since soaring over the Rio Grande, Rossy has pitted his carbon-fiber wings against a rally car on Top Gear, taken to the skies over Abu Dhabi and, most recently, buzzed Brazil's famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Jetman rocketed past the monument on an 11 minute flight earlier this week, beginning his journey by dropping out of a helicopter over Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Rossy pulled his Rocketeer trick and eventually parachuted to safety on Copacabana beach. Sound fun? Head past the break to see the man in action. Us? We'll keep our feet planted on terra firma, thanks.

  • Man skydives from 13 miles above Earth, isn't satisfied (video)

Your worst nightmares? Felix Baumgartner's breakfast. Determined to cement his legacy in the Pantheon of Daredevilry, the famed skydiver successfully leapt from an altitude of more than 70,000 feet last week -- and that was just a trial. It's all part of Baumgartner's attempt to complete a record-breaking 120,000 foot "spacedive" later this year and, based on early returns, he seems well on his way. His latest jump, completed on March 15th, saw the fearless Austrian carried up to more than 13 miles above the Earth, protected only by a pressurized suit and capsule that hung from a 165-foot high helium balloon. Not long after jumping out, he reached a maximum speed of 364.4 mph, with the entire free fall lasting a little over eight minutes, according to Red Bull Stratos, which is sponsoring the effort. The idea behind last week's run was to test out the balloon and pressurized capsule, though Baumgartner is apparently hoping to complete another jump from about 90,000 feet above ground, before attempting the record breaker sometime this summer. Somewhere, Yves Rossy is furiously polishing off his jetpack. For more details on the equipment used to pull off the feat, check out Red Bull Stratos' video, after the break.
