Dell built a color calibrator into its new monitor
Dell's newest monitor, unveiled as part of the Adobe Max event today, has been designed with creators in mind. The UP2720Q is the world's first 27-inch 4K monitor with a built-in colorimeter -- a light-sensitive device that measures the intensity and concentration of color. It offers 100 percent Adobe RBG, 98 percent DCI-P3 and 80 percent BT2020, allowing designers to maximize a larger color gamut and more accurately work with images on devices such as smartphones, computers and TVs, where the DCI-P3 standard is increasingly being used.

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 review: Better than the original
You could say we're big fans of Dell's latest XPS 13. It's been one of our favorite laptops since 2015, and we called the newest model the perfect ultraportable back in April. Well, Dell has already managed to one-up itself with a revamped 2-in-1 version of the XPS 13 that is thinner and can rotate into different orientations. Honestly, it even looks better. It's not only a great convertible laptop but also one of the best ultraportables you can buy today, so much so that it's strong competition even for the standard XPS 13.
Save $120 on a 32-inch Dell QHD monitor
If you're looking for a new desktop screen, Amazon has a compelling offer on a Dell monitor. The company's S3219D is currently $179.99, down from $299.99. It features a 32-inch VA panel with QHD 2560 x 1440 resolution. Additionally, it comes with 5W speakers and a variety of HDMI, DisplayPort and USB ports for a good spread of connectivity options. It also features 99 percent sRGB color gamut coverage, making it a good fit for photo editing work. With FreeSync support, it can also double as a decent gaming monitor if you have an AMD graphics card. Just note that the monitor's refresh rate is limited to 60Hz, so you won't get as smooth of an experience as you would with a 144Hz monitor. It's also not on NVIDIA's list of G-Sync compatible monitors, so your mileage will vary if you own one of the company's GPUs. All that said, for $180 you'll be hard-pressed to find a better monitor for the price, especially one with a QHD panel.
Dell’s six-core XPS 13 laptop goes on sale October 1st
The latest version of Dell's XPS 13 -- which is available with 10th-generation Intel Core processors -- will go on sale October 1st in North America. It's the first six-core configuration for the system, which will come with Windows 10 or Ubuntu 18.04.
Save $180 on one of our favorite gaming laptops of the year
If you're in the market for a new gaming laptop, one of our favorite models from the past year, the Alienware M15 with Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU, is currently discounted on Amazon. Currently, you can get the m15 for $1,500, instead of the $1,680 it typically costs direct from Dell.
The best USB-C hubs and docks

After spending 20 hours testing 22 USB-C hubs and five USB-C docks, we think Vava's VA-UC006 USB-C Hub is the best option for connecting older peripherals and external storage devices to a new laptop or MacBook. It has an ideal range of ports that all transfer data at full speed, it's sturdily built, it's small and light enough to throw in a bag, and it's reasonably priced. With three USB-A ports plus HDMI (with 4K support), Ethernet, SD, microSD, and power passthrough, the Vava VA-UC006 offers the connectors most people need most of the time. It's powerful enough to leave at your desk full-time as a docking station but small enough to slip in your laptop bag and use on the go. The only downside is that the Ethernet port hinges open, a design that saves space but is more likely to break than a standard Ethernet port. HooToo's USB-C Hub HT-UC001 offers similar performance to the Vava for about two-thirds the price, but it lacks a microSD card reader and an Ethernet port. We think the Vava's more versatile port selection and slightly smaller size are worth paying for, but the HooToo is a good option if you need something less expensive. If you just need more USB 3.0 ports for flash drives, keyboards, mice, and other low-power accessories, Aukey's USB C to 4-Port USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hub (CB-C64) is the best option we tested, and the least expensive. It's a straightforward plastic adapter with four full-speed USB 3.0 ports. But its lack of passthrough power makes it a poor choice if your computer has only one or two USB-C ports, as the MacBook does. If you need only an Ethernet connection, we like the Cable Matters USB Type-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. It delivers full Gigabit speed, it comes from a reputable company, and it's inexpensive. It did get warm when we used it, which is to be expected with USB-C Ethernet adapters, but it reached the same temperature as a more expensive model we tested. Docks are larger and usually equipped with more ports than hubs, and they can provide power on their own, making them a better fit if you're looking for something to set on your desk permanently. Among the five USB-C docks we tested, Dell's D6000 Universal Dock is the best, with four USB-A ports, a USB-C port, HDMI and two DisplayPort video ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and a 3.5 mm audio connector. It worked equally well with a PC and a Mac in our testing. It also delivers 65 watts—the most charging power of any dock we measured—and it's the least expensive dock option (though it's still more than twice as expensive as the Vava hub).
51 companies tell Congress it's time to tackle data privacy
The corporate world isn't waiting around for Congress to get started on tougher data privacy laws. A group of 51 CEOs from the Business Roundtable advocacy group, including tech companies like Amazon, AT&T, IBM, Motorola and Qualcomm, have sent an open letter to House and Senate leaders asking them to pass a "comprehensive consumer data privacy law." They claim that state privacy laws vary too widely, leading to confusion for customers and potentially threatening the US' competitiveness. A federal law would reportedly bolster trust and create a "stable policy environment" where companies can craft products knowing exactly where the boundaries are.
Dell XPS 15 review (2019): A powerful laptop in need of a refresh
Dell's XPS series has been an industry favorite for years. We particularly love the 13-inch -- Devindra Hardawar, the only person at Engadget who's a bigger PC nerd than me, even called the XPS 13 the "perfect ultraportable". The XPS 15 is similarly well-rounded, offering powerful performance, a vibrant display and long-lasting battery. I wouldn't call it perfect -- it's a bit chunky, but I have few complaints about this year's XPS 15. Dell has addressed many of our issues with previous models and delivered what may be one of the best 15-inch notebooks around.
Google and Dell team up on the first Chromebooks made for business
The next time you get a laptop from your company's IT department, you might be getting a Chromebook. Not that you couldn't already get a Chromebook from your office, but these offer extra security and organizational features that might leave IT professionals more reassured. The Dell Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise and Dell Latitude 5300 2-in-1 Chromebook Enterprise were born from a partnership between Dell and Google, though the latter also has some updates around Chrome OS enterprise to share today. Unwieldy names aside, these new machines are based on existing models of Dell's Latitude laptops, except they run Chrome OS. So don't be surprised if you find them familiar.
What to expect at IFA 2019
There's just one big technology show before the end of the year, IFA, where we'll see the last goodies revealed before everyone goes into buying mode. As usual, a team of Engadget's finest will descend upon Berlin in the first week of September to uncover all of the best things being shown off. Before we do, however, you can whet your appetite with what we're expecting, or at least hoping, to see when we land.
Dell's XPS 13 now comes with the latest Intel 10th-gen processors
Intel has unveiled its 10th-gen Core processors for ultraportable laptops, so naturally, there are some new laptop announcements, too. Probably the best known ultraportable is Dell's XPS 13, and that model can now be purchased with Intel's 10th-generation, six-core U-series Core i7 CPUs, Dell announced. While these aren't the 10-nanometer chips you might have been waiting for, Intel has promised overall speed gains in the realm of 16 percent compared to 9th-gen CPUs.
Alienware's Aurora desktop and gaming monitors get a huge redesign
It's been a pretty busy year for Alienware, but Dell's boutique gaming brand isn't showing any signs of slowing down soon. At Gamescom this year, the company is unveiling a slew of new gaming hardware, both in a bid to throw in new specs and bring its revamped "Legend" industrial design to more products.
Is the Dell XPS 13 the best Windows laptop around?
Very little sums up Devindra Hardawar's feelings about the Dell XPS 13 better than the first sentence of his review: It's "pretty much the best Windows ultraportable around, and you should buy it." That's a bold statement. However, the combination of thin bezels, a compact design and speedy performance helped to earn the laptop a phenomenal score of 93. The only drawbacks were the lack of a full-size SD slot and a reliance on integrated (instead of dedicated) graphics.
Project Athena gets its own version of the 'Intel Inside' badge
Intel teased Project Athena at CES at the start of this year, then in May the company revealed what the program really hopes to achieve: super long battery life, fast charging and 5G all packaged neatly into ultra slim, lightweight devices aimed at today's "mobile go-getters." Now, the company has unveiled its visual identifier, which will indicate which laptops meet Athena's high specifications.
Dell's revamped XPS 13 2-in-1 goes on sale tomorrow
Dell wasn't exactly clear on when its updated XPS 13 2-in-1 would be ready, but it's finally here... well, almost. The company told Engadget that its refreshed convertible will go on sale in the US starting on August 8th at 9AM Eastern. It'll start at $1,000, with all new models touting 10th-generation Intel Core processors (it may be the first to market with thes chips, in fact) and a Dolby Vision-capable 13.4-inch touchscreen.

On the plus side, there are more choices than ever, which means there's a good chance you can find a notebook that's perfect for you. The downside: With so many options, it's often hard to figure out what's actually worth buying. We've recommended some of our favorite laptops as part of our annual back-to-school guide, but here are some tips to keep in mind. First off, consider what your needs are: Your laptop is going to see you through every class report and Netflix binge for the next four years. Get a machine that can do both. For many students, a modern ultraportable will be enough. But if you want to game or edit media, you'll have to make sure you find something with a bit more power.
