Microsoft is considering foldable devices with liquid-filled hinges

Microsoft's dreams of dual-screen devices aren't disappearing any time soon. A recent patent filing from the company details a clamshell device concept whose hinge is filled with a liquid or gas to reduce strain on a foldable display and prevent debris from getting inside -- both sore points for foldables as of late. You could close this shut without worrying quite so much about wear and tear.

Dating app Ship lets friends find your matches

Dating apps are mostly a solitary effort, with users swiping on prospective soulmates from the comfort of their own couch. Ship, a dating app that lets single people involve friends in the matchmaking process, may change that. The Match Group and Betches Media have now released an Android version of Ship, which lets users swipe for their friends and discuss profiles in group messages. The iOS version, which debuted back in January, is now the fastest-growing dating app in the Match Group family, which also includes Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and PlentyofFish.

Bloomberg: Galaxy Fold redesign is complete

Still waiting for Samsung's first foldable phone? Bloomberg cites anonymous sources saying that Samsung has completed a redesign of the Galaxy Fold in just two months. The protective film now covers the entire screen and stretches into the bezel so people can't pull it off by accident, and hopefully reduce the appearance of a seam in the middle. Also, the hinge has reportedly undergone tweaking to make it flush with the display, and pushing the film up when the device is opened.

Match app adds an offline dating coach for your online dating woes

Match thinks it can help users navigate that jungle -- by offering some human assistance. The online dating site is launching a new service, AskMatch, that will connect its paid users to a dating coach for a chat over the phone. The service is launching in New York City this month, with the goal of expanding nationwide by 2020.

Galaxy Fold teardown gives us a look at its complicated design

This teardown is no precision iFixit job, but if you just want to see what parts and pixie dust are holding Samsung's Galaxy Fold together, some images from an apparently now-deleted Weibo post can help. Not surprisingly for a first-gen new device, the design is seems incredibly complex and highlights some of the points of failure that may have lead to quickly-broken review units. According to GSM Arena, the original poster said the flexible 7.3-inch display was "soft like rubber" when removed, although they "shattered" the Fold's small external display while taking it apart. The hinge mechanism seems quite complicated with watch-like gears, and looking inside shows where ribbon cables flow across the joint that's supposed to hold up to hundreds of thousands of bends. Other interesting elements include its inside and outside cameras, as well as two separate battery packs.

Hinge's AI will use first date feedback to improve matches

Dating app Hinge wants you to help improve its pairing algorithm by telling it how your first date went with a fellow user. The aim is to get the AI serving better recommendations in the future. Here's how it works: a few days after you exchange phone numbers with a match in the app, Hinge will ping you both with the new "We Met" prompt to determine if you went on a first date. Your responses, says the company, will make its AI even smarter. Hinge claims that in initial beta tests, 90 percent of members said that their first dates were great, and 72 percent wanted to go on second dates.
