“A small percentage of iPhone 11” units suffer from touch issues, Apple says, and it’s swapping out their displays for free as part of a new replacement program. Apple didn’t elaborate on what exactly causes the screen to stop responding, but it’s asking owners with affected displays to check their phone’s serial number on the support page to find out if they’re eligible for free replacement. Only iPhone 11 models manufactured within the said period are part of the program.

'iPhone SE 2020' rumored to launch soon

Especially because it seems like high-end phones are getting bigger and more expensive, there's been a lot of interest in rumors over the last year or so that Apple will release another value-priced model. The iPhone SE provided strong performance in a small package in 2016, and now, 9to5Mac cites their sources claiming Apple will use the name again on a phone that could launch very soon, with orders starting as soon as Friday. Of course, that would be an extraordinary debut under any circumstance, and especially now as the company's stores are closed in most countries around the world. Previous rumors have suggested that the cheaper device could look a lot like an iPhone 8, and 9to5Mac also points out a listing for a Belkin screen protector that recently updated to mention the SE as well. As far as specs, they're suggesting three tiers of storage at 64GB / 128GB / 256GB, and three colors: white, black and Product (RED). If the rumors hold up, then it would replace the iPhone 8 in Apple's lineup, while featuring a version of the newer A13 processor that powers the iPhone 11 series. It seems certain that Apple will launch a new, cheaper model at some point if only to simplify its product offering around devices with similar components, but with the coronavirus pandemic affecting every level of logistics there's room for more variation than usual as to when such a product might arrive.

Yahoo was a bastion of the early days of mainstream internet, but is it really relevant anymore? It's no secret that its popularity has waned in recent times, so in what is presumably a bid to bring itself back to the fore, it's branching out to the mobile business. Yahoo Mobile will tout unlimited texts, calls and 4G data, all for the flat fee of $40 a month.

Apple's first-party iPhone cases tend to cost significantly more than their no-name counterparts. Even cases from well-regarded companies like Spigen are usually less expensive than the ones you can buy directly from Apple. That said, if you prefer to put your recently purchased iPhone 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max in a matching case, Amazon has discounted its stock of Apple-made cases. In some instances, the company is currently selling the accessories at all-time low prices.

Nearly every top-selling smartphone in 2019 was an iPhone or Galaxy

It's almost a cliché to say that Apple and Samsung dictate the tempo of the smartphone market, but there's now more evidence to support that claim. Counterpoint Research has calculated that nine out of the top ten smartphones sold worldwide in 2019 were made by either Apple or Samsung -- Oppo's A5 was the only exception at fifth place. The iPhone XR had the clear lead, representing 3 percent of all phones sold, while the Galaxy A50 was the top Android phone on the list with 1.8 percent.

Apple iOS update offers more control over iPhone 11 location tracking

Apple is quickly acting on plans to curb location tracking on iPhone 11 models. It just released an iOS 13.3.1 update (plus a corresponding iPadOS update) that, most notably, adds a toggle to control the U1 Ultra Wideband chip's use of location services. The iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max all use location checks to verify that they're in areas where ultra wideband is legally allowed, but the switch turns those checks off if you're concerned about privacy.

DOJ letter reveals the FBI recently cracked an iPhone 11

While the Department of Justice, US attorney general and even the president continue to pressure Apple for additional technical support in unlocking iPhones tied to the naval base shooting in December, a letter reveals that the FBI recently cracked a password-protected iPhone 11. That phone belonged to Lev Parnas, an associate of the president's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who has been indicted on charges of violating straw and foreign donor bans to illegally funnel money into US elections. Bloomberg reports that a letter from government lawyers to the judge (PDF) indicated that the FBI spent two months unlocking the defendant's iPhone 11. Last week Motherboard reported on text messages and notes that appeared to have been pulled from the iPhone using forensics software from Cellebrite. It appears, that, similar to the case of the San Bernardino shooting a few years ago, the government has access to tools that will allow them to pull data from an iPhone, but is requesting additional help and some sort of backdoor access directly from Apple.

Apple explains why the iPhone 11 is always checking your location

Security researcher Brian Krebs recently raised eyebrows when he discovered that the iPhone 11 Pro (and by extension, the iPhone 11) is constantly checking for your location, even if you've disabled Location Services. Is Apple tracking your every move? Not really, it turns out. The company told TechCrunch in a statement that its newer iPhones need to perform location checks to legally use their ultra wideband chips. "International regulatory requirements" force Apple to turn off UWB in certain places, a spokesperson said, and the location checks are necessary to do that while making the technology available most of the time.
