Jaybird Vista review: The best true wireless buds under $200
For any truly wireless earbuds to be worth a damn, they need to be comfortable, sound great, and fit securely. Jaybird's new Vista buds ($180) hit all those benchmarks — and more. They're fully waterproof and sweatproof. They're incredibly light, weighing just 6 grams, or as much as a sheet of paper. And they sound significantly better than Jaybird's Run, its last wireless earbuds, or any of the company's previous headphones. After spending a few weeks with the Vista, they're easily my favorite workout headphones of the year.
Jaybird's Vista are a sleeker pair of wireless exercise earbuds
Since we reviewed Jaybird's Run, the company's first truly wireless earbuds, the competition has heated up significantly. So much so that just making the Run fully waterproof isn't enough -- Jaybird needs something bold to turn heads (and ears) again. Enter the Vista ($180): they're lighter and sleeker than the Run buds, while also delivering significantly better audio quality and some useful upgrades.
The audio gear we recommend to students
A life without music is a pretty dull one. Obviously, you need to make sure you're ready for the school year with some solid headphones, a decent pair of speakers and something good to listen to. There's an overwhelming number of choices out there when it comes to personal audio, but because we review this stuff year round, it was easy for us to just cull the list for you. Whether you need something with noise-cancelling to block out an annoying roommate, or headphones for the gym that shrug off sweat, we've got you covered. And, what you listen to on those speakers and headphones is just as important. You'll want to stay on top of the latest podcast sensation and you need a way to stream the new Bon Iver album for your crush. But remember, music isn't just a passive experience: We're also recommending a few tools for the budding songwriter and producer. It may sound cliché, but these are some of the most important years of your life, and how you soundtrack them will stay with you forever.
Jaybird's wireless Run XT earbuds are fully waterproof too
Jaybird has upgraded its Run wireless earbuds, encasing them in IPX7 housing to make them fully waterproof. The original version is only sweatproof and water-resistant, but you can presumably use this one out in the storm. Jaybird calls this variant of the product Run XT, and it's touting it as an "all weatherproof" pair of earbuds that can last in extreme conditions. In addition to encasing the earbuds in IPX7 housing, the company has also given them a minor makeover and made them available in new colors, namely Black/Flash and Storm Gray/Glacier.
Jaybird's Tarah Pro wireless earbuds offer 14 hours of music for $160
While true wireless earbuds might be all the rage in 2018, a lot of folks still prefer their audio gear to be tethered. For those people, companies like Jaybird continue to roll out new products with improved features. Today, that company is introducing the Tarah Pro: an upgraded version of its most recent wireless sports earbuds that pack an impressive 14 hours of battery life for $160.
Jaybird's Tarah are $100 wireless earbuds built for sweaty workouts
Jaybird has been a solid option for wireless earbuds for years now, and today the company is debuting yet another model for your workouts. The Tarah Wireless Sport Headphones are built for the gym, complete with an IPX7 rating to ensure you don't run into moisture troubles when things get sweaty. With a design similar to the company's X4 that debuted in August, the Tarah is $30 cheaper at $100. That's also $50 less than the Beats X.
Jaybird's X4 sport earbuds are redesigned and waterproof
The latest update in Jaybird's line of X-series sport earbuds is here, and brings a couple of key upgrades from the old X3 set. Dubbed the Jaybird X4 Wireless Sport Headphones, these buds are obviously intended for active and outdoor wear. Now they have a tweaked design that the company says you'll find even more comfortable, and for the first time they're certified IPX7 waterproof instead of just sweatproof. While they're probably not suited for your next full triathlon workout, Jaybird promises protection from rain, snow or submersion down to one meter for as long as 30 minutes. As far as the comfort goes, a new "Speed Cinch" cord management system lets you put the wire under- or -over-ear depending on your preference, plus new fins and tips that will help it find a snug fit inside your ear. Finally, "new exclusive-to-Jaybird Comply Ultra foam tips" use thermo-reactive foam tips to snuggle deeply in the ear canal. Battery life hasn't changed and still promises up to eight hours, and you can still customize the sound using Jaybird's iOS or Android app. We'll have to wear them to see how all the new promises work out, but the best news is that these will arrive for the same price as Jaybird's current model: $130. Pre-orders open today on the company's website before they go on sale everywhere in September. There are two colors you'll be able to get anywhere they're sold, Black Metallic/Flash and Alpha Metallic/Jade, while the Storm Metallic/Glacier edition is exclusive to its website and Best Buy.
The nine headphones that made our back-to-school guide
So you're headed off to college in the fall. What are you going to use to help you focus when you're on deadline? To tune out the rowdy partiers down the hall? Whether you need a pair of earbuds, a set of sound-cancelling cans or just a pair of budget headphones that don't suck, our annual back-to-school guide has you covered. If you can only afford one pair, Jabra's Elite 65t wireless earbuds are our go-to recommendation. Athletes will appreciate the Jaybird Run earbuds or perhaps the wired Beats X 'buds, while market leader Bose remains our top pick in the noise-canceling category. (Go with the QuietComfort QC35 II.) And if you're looking for an over-the-ear-style headset, we have picks from Audeze, Blue, TMA-2, Corsair and Even, including a few models designed for gamers. Find all that and all our other picks in Engadget's full back-to-school guide.
Which true wireless earbuds are worth buying?
With so many flagship phones leaving behind the headphone jack over the past two years, the need for a good pair of Bluetooth earbuds has only intensified. While the first crop of true wireless products had their share of comfort and connection problems, the selection improved dramatically in 2017, with companies like Bose and Bang & Olufsen coming out with sets that gave Apple's AirPods a real run for the money. If you've been holding off on buying a pair because of cost, poor audio or because they just look ridiculous, it might finally be time to make the leap. We consulted reviews from top critics and came up with a list of six solid options that should have something for everyone, whether you're on a budget or prize sound quality above all else.

Our testing showed that these earbuds should withstand abuse, sweat, and moisture when used properly, plus they're backed by a one-year warranty and responsive customer service.
The best audio gear to give as gifts
Maybe there's an audiophile on your list, or maybe you're shopping for someone who recently acquired a new phone and could use something better than the pack-in headphones. Either way, we have a slew of recommendations in the audio gear section of our holiday gift guide. On our list you'll find smart speakers from Google and Amazon alike, along with Sonos, whose new "One" speaker includes Alexa built in, with Google Assistant support coming soon. When it comes to headphones, our selections run the gamut from the affordable (Jabra's Move headset) to the high end (Bragi's Dash Pro wireless earbuds and these noise cancelling headphones from Sony), with a couple mid-range options in between. Rounding out the list, we have a soundbar, drum machine, synth app, the Amazon Echo Show and one of our favorite portable Bluetooth speakers. Find all that and many more items in our holiday gift guide, at the link below.
Jaybird Run review: The perfect truly wireless earbuds for workouts
Completely wireless earbuds are everywhere this year. Call it the Apple AirPods effect, or perhaps it's just a matter of the right components being available at the right time. But now that completely cordless designs are less novel than they used to be, companies have to work harder to stand out. Jaybird, which has had years of experience in wireless audio, is taking a stab at the increasingly crowded field with its $180 Run earbuds. They're comfortable, sound great for their size and offer solid reception (for the most part).
