What's on TV: 'E.T.,' Emmys, 'Vice Principals' and 'Broad City'
As we transition from fall to summer TV, Preacher wraps up its season tonight and The Strain calls it a wrap for the series on Sunday. That's the same night as the prime time Emmy awards, and when we'll get the season premiere of HBO's Vice Principals. Before that happens, however, NBA 2K18 and NBA Live 18 will both arrive later this week (the Prelude for 2K18 is already out so you can create your character early, as well as a Live demo). Cinema fans can get the anniversary edition of E.T., now available in 4K, or go for something new with Get Out, but the show I'm most excited to see return is Broad City. What's on TV: 'Destiny 2,' 'Bojack Horseman,' and 'You're the Worst'
Fall is here, and NFL action is back. Other than football, this week's big releases include a new season of Bojack Horseman, plus Destiny 2 and Knack 2 for gamers. On TV, You're the Worst is back for a new season on FXX, AMC has Fear the Walking Dead and Syfy is airing season one of the crowdfunded Con Man show starring Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion. Season finales this week include Insecure, Loaded, Blood Drive, Snowfall and Shooter. Finally, there's a slew of Ultra HD Blu-ray movies out this week including Blade Runner (The Final Cut), Red,Red 2, The Cabin in the Woods and Rough Night. Pro football is almost back, but until then we have the debut of college football this weekend. Also arriving is Wonder Woman (via the usual video on-demand outlets), while Baywatch brings The Rock to 4K Blu-ray and the Twin Peaks revival wraps up on Showtime. For gamers we have the first episode of the Life is Strange prequel, as well as some rehashes with ReCore: Definitive Edition and Resident Evil: Revelations. We're back! This week the big event doesn't occur until Sunday night (unless it leaks early), when Game of Thrones wraps up its penultimate season with another super-sized episode clocking in at 79 minutes, 43 seconds. Until then we can check out Madden 18, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Disney's first 4K Blu-ray release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Amazon Prime has its first season of The Tick, while Netflix drops its Death Note live action movie. What's on TV: 'The Carmichael Show' and 'Orphan Black' finales
This week we're saying goodbye to several notable shows. BBC America's Orphan Black tops the list with its series finale Saturday night, but we'll also take a look at series enders for The Carmichael Show, Turn and Doubt. There are also season finales for shows including I'm Dying Up Here, World of Dance, Claws and Unsung. For movie fans there's a Fargo re-release on Blu-ray, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is available (in 4K!) on video on-demand services before its Ultra HD Blu-ray release in a few weeks. Big videogame releases include Cliff Bleszinski's latest effort LawBreakers, and the latest episodic effort from Telltale Games Batman: The Enemy Within. This week is a big one for Netflix, although bigger releases like The Defenders are still waiting for later in August. This week we'll see season three of Voltron: Legendary Defender, as well as season two of Wet Hot American Summer. Syfy is back with its fifth Sharknado movie and DirecTV has the series finale of Kingdom. For gamers, The Long Dark is officially launching while TBS airs Road to the International Dota 2 Championships, and tech paranoia flick The Circle is available on Blu-ray. It's summer, and that means it's time for Discovery Channel's Shark Week. Along with the usual specials, it also has Shark After Dark talks set up hosted by Chris Hardwick. In non-shark related news, there's the second season of Community creator Dan Harmon's HarmonQuest streaming on SeeSo, while Netflix will release The Incredible Jessica James later this week starring former The Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. This week's big Netflix addition isn't an original, instead it's the first Star Wars flick licensed under its 2012 arrangement with Disney. Tomorrow morning Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be available to subscribers in the US, while Last Chance U arrives later this week. On TV HBO will follow up the second episode from Game of Thrones with season premieres of Insecure and Ballers, Shark Week kicks off sunday night and Kong:Skull Island is available on Ultra HD Blu-ray. For gamers, there's the Destiny 2 beta starting this week, along with Superhot on PlayStation, What Remains of Edith Finch on Xbox One and Splatoon 2 on Nintendo Switch. What's on TV: 'Game of Thrones'
It's been more than a year since the last time Game of Thrones aired a new episode, but finally, it's back. HBO's flagship series kicks off its seven-episode penultimate season Sunday night with Dragonstone, so hopefully you're ready. Other shows making their return this week include The Strain and Suits, while Viceland tries out a run of its Funny How comedy documentary series. Fate of the Furious, The Fifth Element and Leon: The Professional are all available in 4K this week, while Netflix is releasing its new series Friends from College. It's a holiday week, but if you're up from people setting off fireworks early, you can check out six new comedy specials on Netflix Tuesday morning as part of The Standups, with Deon Cole, Beth Stelling, Nate Bargatze, Dan Soder, Nikki Glaser, and Fortune Feimster. Then, later this week the service drops season one of its animated Castlevania series, as well as the most recent season of CW's iZombie. FX is premiering Snowfall, its crack cocaine era drama from John Singleton, while Hulu drops season one of Pure. The most unusual debut, however, is probably the new Candy Crush game show on CBS. This week Netflix is preparing to premiere its next big film, from director Bong Joon Ho (Mother, The Host, Snowpiercer) called Okja. It's also time for the return of two familiar video games, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is available in standalone form on the PS4, along with the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy that has been fully rebuilt, retuned and remastered. The latest Fast and the Furious movie is ready for streaming on-demand, while on TV it's time for a series finale with Pretty Little Liars, as well as season finales for Doctor Who and iZombie. Now that the NBA/NHL finals and E3 are all over, it's time to say goodbye to a few other shows for the season, as Better Call Saul, Fargo and Silicon Valley all air season finale episodes this week. Premieres include Netflix's women's wrestling series GLOW, season two of Preacher and Queen Sugar and another new series in The Mist on Spike TV. While E3 rages on, there is a world outside of upcoming videogames.
