With the latest MateBook Pro X. paradoxically, it has a bigger screen, but it's also slimmer. There's a load of ports, a huge trackpad and an impressive-sounding fast charge feature.

Huawei MateBook X Pro review (2019): As good as before

For a company with relatively little experience making laptops, Huawei's MateBook X Pro was a revelation. The machine was one of the best you could buy, with a blend of style and performance that made it the equal of a brand-name incumbent. Now, the company has to deal with the raised expectations that come when your last device was regarded as class leading. It's the sort of problem that could lead some design teams to second-guess themselves as they wonder what made the first one such a hit. Do you stick with what works or try to push the envelope in the hope of reaching even greater heights? Huawei's wisely chosen not to reinvent the wheel, here, but that conservatism means there's really not much to distinguish this from its predecessor.

Huawei's Mobile World Congress lineup actually starts with laptops this year. Expect to see at least three MateBooks in 2019, in fact. The company is rounding out of its PC family, but the main draw is the triumphant return of the MateBook X Pro, upgraded for 2019 with up to 8th generation Core i7 processors, up to 16 gigs of RAM and 1TB of storage (double the amount from last year). There's also a GPU upgrade to the NVIDIA GeForce MTX 250, which I'm not going to complain about, either.

Huawei may be the subject of plenty of public scrutiny from America's security services, but the company still has a bundle of laptops to sell. Fresh from launches across rest of the world, Huawei is now bringing its newest MateBook X Pro to the US from today.

Huawei MateBook X Pro review: A polished yet quirky laptop

Laptops are exercises in compromise, with companies sacrificing what they deem to be unnecessary features on the twin altars of portability and longevity. The decisions on what to keep and what to ditch will ultimately be how the hardware is judged in the real world. Huawei's fourth traditional laptop, the MateBook X Pro, manages to avoid most of the pitfalls around cramming decent hardware in a slender, good-looking body. In fact, it might even be good enough to make laptop buyers think twice about simply running back to the usual cluster of brands.

Huawei's MateBook X Pro crams a pop-up webcam into the keyboard

When Huawei unveiled its first true laptop barely a year ago, it was a slightly more useful MacBook lookalike. While the MateBook X looked a lot like Apple's device, it offered some minor changes that alleviated common grievances, including the MacBook's solo USB-C port and its barely-there key travel. At MWC this year, Huawei is unveiling the next generation of the series, called the MateBook X Pro. It's a larger, more powerful notebook with a better display and impressive audio tech, but one quirky new feature could prevent it from being a good option for professionals.

Huawei's MacBook clone is slightly less pricey at $1,100

We were reasonably impressed with Huawei's first bold foray into the Windows 10 notebook market, the Matebook X. Partially because it's a dead ringer for Apple's 12-inch MacBook and partially because Huawei's machine improved on it in a few key ways (like adding a second USB-C port. Whoa). A month after our first look, we're getting price points for the 13-inch notebook. The machine will be available for pre-order June 30th. $1,100 nabs you an Intel Core i5-powered version with 256GB of space in space gray or you can shell out $200 more for a slightly faster Intel Core i7-loaded model with 512GB of storage in prestige gold.

  • Huawei reportedly turned down Google's new phone strategy

You may be wondering why Google appears to be going with HTC for this year's Pixel phones instead of Huawei. Wasn't the Nexus 6P a rousing success? Apparently, Huawei and Google aren't getting along quite as well as you might think. An Android Police source understands that Huawei bristled at Google's plan to take more control over its Android hardware, which included erasing any mentions of the phone builder's name. Huawei wanted a larger footprint in the US, and it wasn't going to get that by being reduced to a contract manufacturer.

  • Huawei's MateBook is beautiful, but fundamentally flawed

For many people, Huawei isn't a name they associate with premium gadgetry. Sure, it's the world's third-biggest smartphone maker, and in China, it's gained a reputation for quality. But in the US and most of the Western world, it's mostly known as a purveyor of cheap phones. With the MateBook, a hybrid tablet that marks the company's first stab at a full-fledged computer, Huawei is hoping to change that. But while it certainly looks nice, the MateBook's keyboard cover ultimately dooms it as something I can't recommend.

Huawei's Surface competitor, the Matebook, is headed to the US on July 11th starting at $699. Announced back at Mobile World Congress, it's a 12-inch laptop/tablet hybrid that weighs in at a mere 1.4 pounds and 6.9 millimeters thin. Huawei claims it's the lightest 12-inch tablet on the market. Even though it's a hybrid, the Matebook still counts as the company's first laptop. And as is usually the case with convertibles, there's a stylus pen accessory with Windows Ink support and 2,048 levels of pressure.

Just how hot are convertible PCs these days? Enough for Huawei to make one its very first computer. Today the Chinese electronics giant announced the MateBook, a 12-inch hybrid Windows 10 tablet, at Mobile World Congress. Just like Microsoft's Surface line, it transforms into a functional Windows 10 laptop with the addition of a keyboard cover (which, thankfully, is included in the box). There's also a stylus accessory that looks very similar to the Surface Pen.
